Non-Smoking Cabins

I'm sure this question has been posted before, but do any of the cruise lines prohibit smoking in the cabins? I heard that Disney did, but got different answers from agents at RCCL...some saying it wasn't allowed but others confirming it's allowed. I am EXTREMELY sensitive to cigarette smoke so this is a deal breaker for me. Thanks

(raising hand) Another non-smoker here who's very sensitive to cigarette, cigar and even barbeque smoke. Sorry, there are no non-smoking cabins onboard most of the cruise ships today. Disney is, I think, the exception. That said, I've only been bothered by smoke on one cruise out of 7 non-Disney cruises. I sure wish hotels could do the same type of air cleaning that ships do, as I find most non-smoking hotel rooms reek of cigarettes. The one time I did have a problem was when a cabin next door housed a chain smoker, we just stayed out of the cabin a whole lot!

There are a lot of non-smoking venues onboard the ship, too. The dining room, the show rooms, one side of the pool deck is designated non-smoking. With the exception of some of the bars and the casino, the smoke smell isn't really a problem for us at all, we just avoid those areas.

We sailed on Celebrity and I do have to say, it seemed there were far fewer smokers on that ship than the RCI and definitley the Carnival ship we cruised on. Also, stay away from weekend, short cruises, those tend to be more of a "party" time voyage, with more smokers. I know I have a few friends who only smoke when they are out partying.

I am also very sensitive to smoke and also to some chemical cleaners in the air.

So for what it is worth I have never had any problems with my room smelling like smoke. That is definitely one thing that would change my views on cruising. Cig. smoke is one of my big pet peeves in life.

I think Orient and Oceania have No smoking policies for the cabins.

Oceania has it posted right on their site......even on cabin balconies!!

What is the smoking policy of Oceania Cruises?

For the comfort and safety of our guests smoking is permitted only in designated areas. These will be a small section of the Horizons Bar and a small section on the Pool Deck. Smoking is not permitted in the staterooms, public room, verandas or in any of the dining areas. Cigar and pipe smoking will not be allowed anywhere indoors.

Having cruised Oceania (and being a non-smoker) I was pleased to see that they very strictly enforce their policy. Smoking is definitely limited to a small area of the ship and anyone violating the policy is first given a written warning, and if ignored will be asked to leave the ship at the next port. Harsh? maybe. But that is one reason many of us prefer this line.

Smoke detectors - the same ones that the manufacturers claim won't be set off by cigarette smoke. Depends on the make and model, but in some of them it's as simple as changing a resistor. There's also all kinds of them that can be connected to a fire detection and supression system. It's not too difficult to envision a system which could be designed to distinguish between tobacco smoke and other smoke, so as to alert the stewards in the case of the former and the ship's firefighting team in the event of the latter.
