Has anyone else seen the price of Tappenyaki restaurant on the Getaway Dec 8-13, 2019??  $46.80!!!   We are not going to pay that to eat there no matter how good the food is.  What justifies that price? Anyone know?

Supply and demand economics.

All specialty dining has went through the roof.  With so many passengers having the dining plan booked with the cruise, I bet availability is nearly impossible thus price increases.

I don't believe NCL even discounts meal plans bought in advance of the cruise anymore.  Before all these drastic increases, you could save $8.00 by purchasing a 3 specialty dining meal plan.  Not anymore.

I miss the good ole days when NCL gave you your daily meal allowance credit for eating in specialty restaurants.  You could eat like a king for $20 in Cagneys, $10 La Cucina.

And add to that the value of the MDR or buffet meal you have already paid for but are not using to get the true cost to you of that speciality meal.

Hmmm, on a related thread/post - someone else uploaded a screenshot of their Tappenyaki price for Feb. 9, 2020 as being "just" $39 p/p including 20% gratuities ??  A quick calc - the upcharge would be $32.50 p/p with a 20% surcharge, adding up to $39 per paying guest.  Not clear which ship that is for - prices being lowered for 2020 ??  What the heck !

Locally here, 15 minutes from us, we can do Hibachi for under $35 or less p/p with choices for surf & turf (real cold-water lobster tail) or premium beef, jumbo prawns (not "shrimps"), scallops, chicken, and/or salmon fillet ... mix-n-match.

No wonder that Joy failed big time in China as they just couldn't fill their Teppanyaki slots.

Ours are only around $25 pp, $30 max, 10 miles from manhattan.

I did Teppanyaki on the Star 5 years ago.  The food was fine but not outstanding.  They can charge through the roof since families will go with their kids since they figure its got to be an improvement over the mdr, and the kids will enjoy the show (the latter is definitely true, not so much for the former at least on the Star).  There's very limited capacity in Teppanyaki and a lot of families, so I wouldn't be too surprised if it sells out even if it is a rip off (as a parent you sometimes sign up for that willingly).  The kids club is closed for two hours for dinner on sea days, so its something to do with your kids and you get a meal with limited whining.  Aside from that, no I'd recommend doing this off the ship.

Yeah, kids will enjoy the show, but if I recall correctly on the ship they don't allow open flames, which makes the ship show not nearly as fun as land-based teppanyaki shows.  No onion volcanoes!  :-)

It is a much better value to just go to one of those restaurants at home. Complete waste of money on the ships for a mediocre meal.
