There are a couple of hundred folks in the last week that join in this sentiment

Except I bet they could have all done it in less the 10 paragraphs.  The first sign someone is exaggerating.

MY WIFE AND I WENT ON THE JOY IN JUNE FOR OUR 50th ANNIVERSARY.  WE DIDN'T KNOW OUR STATEROOM WOULD BE DIRECTLY UNDER THE DINING ROOM.  THE NOISE WAS UNBEARABLE.  NCL WASN'T ANY HELP AT ALL.

Easy.  But you can't make it look like your United States Constitutional Rights have been violated by just doing it in two lines.

If I had 50 cents for every time a thread was opened to complain about the noise from an adjacent space I'd get my next cruise free.  It's impossible that the OP could have cruised 20 times and not have known that this could be an issue, or read one of the 7 million threads all over the internet discussing doing your research about the proximity of your stateroom to noise, motion and obstructed views.

Didn’t the OP choice his own room??

Here's the deck plan on NCL's site for OP's room on deck 14:

And here's the deck plan for deck 15 in the space directly above OP's cabin:

Given this information, if you didn't know that blank space indicated a crew area, you might easily conclude that nothing of concern is directly above.  Perhaps NCL should label the blank spaces so people can dig deeper into the cabin location research.

in our 10 years cruising with NCL the only time we have had a bad experience with our Cabin was in 2011  on the NCL Jewel. The ship was full and we had an inside cabin, half way through our cruise our Stateroom started smelling like sewage. We complained and complained and they were never able to fix it and did not move us to another location. In fact, walking through the deck every single corner of it smelled like sewage, it was miserable. One bad experience does not mean we wont ever go on NCL again, things happen. I guess that's just us.

This happened to us but on a Carnival ship.  The smell was horrible, and it was truly miserable.  Our cabin attendant and Carnival was aware but didn't do anything about it.  I didn't get offered a thing.  No room move, no dinner and no on board credit.  We would have been very happy with that offering.  I think NCL tried their best to help the OP.  I'm sure he is mad because he wrote to corporate and wanted more compensation.  They can bad mouth NCL all they want  but I  don't think any other cruise line would have offered them anything more.

So what you are saying is that the discomfort in the room would have dissipated with compensation? Other posters said case closed become OP accepted the offer. But what about all the unsuspecting cruisers who will book the same cabin in the future? Yet, NCL knows the cabin is a problem and continues to get top dollar for it. Problem cabins should be denoted and discounted.

I would be upset too.  We had the same experience in an Owner's Suite that was directly under a public deck (scraping noises from chairs & tables at all hours).  I learned from it and now am careful not to book anything with a public space above it (except for maybe the card room or the library).  Not everyone would know that though, and certainly not everyone who cruises is on CC and able to spend hours searching forums for cabin info.

This couldn't have been the first (or even 50th) time someone complained about the noise in this cabin.  They clearly know about it and should proactively inform passengers looking to book the cabin, that it is located under a busy public space and subject to noise.  Those who have success with earplugs and white noise machines can still happily book it and light sleepers can find another cabin.

I appreciate when people post about issues like this, because it brings to attention specific issues with rooms that you otherwise would never think of. Since this would be a "premium", higher-priced type of room, I - like the OP - would incorrectly assume that it had a premium location. The deck plans can be kind of hard to understand.

To the OP, if you change your mind about cruising with NCL in the future, I would recommend calling to book your cruise instead of booking online, yourself. We have always called (after mock-booking online to get an idea of price expectations) and EVERY SINGLE TIME, the PCC was able to give us insight and suggestions on which room to book. I.E. "No, you don't want that room, it's directly under X area which can be quite noisy" or "If you are getting that room type, we have this one that has a slightly bigger balcony available, we'll set it all up!" They always have more information than is available online, in terms of "quality" or quirks of the rooms.

This is why we never choose a stateroom under a public areas deck. There are too many unknowns. We might think we know what would go on above us, but there are so many hidden from pax view areas, you really can’t assume. I’m sorry you had a bad experience, and it’s good to advise others so they don’t have the same experience. I really don’t understand why a cruise line would put primo staterooms in noisy locations time and time again. If it’s the bottom of the barrel inside and have it denoted as noisy, that’s one thing to save some money, but not pay a fortune to be kept up.

  • 3 years later...

I just came off the Norwegian Joy and indeed booked a full fare suite (SP 14511).  I actually created an account specifically because after we got on board we experienced airport level noise the first night and every single night of our 15 day cruise.  It is extremely disappointing that even after several years this is an ongoing issue.  We are incredibly bummed to have paid north of $17,000 after all fees, taxes, gratuities, packages for our room and to leave with the experience we had.  I wrote a review but now I'm searching for more info on our room and I'm finding threads like this.  I'm a Sapphire member just for reference.
