Insights on an Adelaide port day

We'll be in port Sat Jan 25, 7am-9pm. We expect this will be our only visit to Adelaide.

 

I've done a bit of research and the choice before us is to see the sights in/around Adelaide or take an 8-hr wine tour to the Barossa Valley.  Alternatively, we'll have several days in Sydney and could consider a wine tour to the Hunter Valley instead. BTW, I favour Shiraz.

The Barossa in out of Adelaide would certainly be easier than the Hunter from out of Sydney. The wines from both regions are excellent and both would do a great Shiraz at multiple wineries.

 

For the Barossa - Penfolds and Wolf Blass come to mind as great shiraz's.

Just note that many of the larger wineries, especially in the Barossa and the hunter have their tasting areas which are very commercialised now, Which in my opinion lessens the experience. Many even charge for all tastings and not just the more exclusive wines.

I would suggest the wine tour of barossa. You will probably see some other sites along the way. You will get more time at wineries than you would going on a day trip to the Hunter where it would take ages just to get out of Sydney. There are plenty of other things to do to fill your sydney days.

Agreed, I have lived in both places and Sydney has many more big ticket tourist sites to see than Adelaide city itself.

Adelaide has the Cricket ground, the museums, the zoo, Glenelg beach, Rundle Mall, etc and many other things but in comparison to Sydney's Opera house, the Harbour, the Bridge, ferries to Manly or the Taroonga zoo, Darling harbour, the blue mountains, the museums, the aquarium, Sydney is a real tourist drawcard.

Hahndorf is worth a tour, been there a couple of times on driving holidays and have booked a shorex there in February whilst on Majestic Princess - Sydney to Singapore.

Thanks everyone for your advice. We're doing three cruises = 14 ports, 2 days of scenic cruising, 2 + 5 nights in Sydney, and 2 nights + one port day in Melbourne, so it's a lot of planning!  Also looking forward to the sea days to rest up!

 

While it would be lovely to also spend time in Adelaide, I think that the wine tour would be a more memorable experience. The two companies I'm considering include extra stops.  It will also be nice to see some countryside along the way.  I'm checking to see if one of the companies only does tours for the ship when we'll be in port.

We're also in Adelaide for the day next year on Radiance. I've booked a private tour of the Barossa, pick up from the port, through Nicki at Seeadelaide.com  Might suit you? Minimum is a 10 seater bus which will involve you getting others to join the tour. I filled mine in 5 minutes.

Stuart, thanks so much for taking the time to share this info.

 

We've done it... booked a Barossa Food & Wine tour in Adelaide through shoretripsandtours dot com that will collect and return us to Outer Harbour and sells their tour per/person without your having to create a group to share the cost.  Wish we also had time to go to Glenelg, looks lovely, but that would be too ambitious on our day.  Pity the ship is such a distance from the city.

 

I'm sure your suggestions will benefit others. Certainly, there's no place like home!

Fantastic post, Stuart, so many thanks. We will be in Adelaide for a couple of days prior to a cruise, so I have copied out your post as a great guide to use for one of our days there. It's so long since I lived in Adelaide (I worked for the SAGR out of that lovely old railway station before it became a casino), and I lived in Glenelg, but your post gives us a whole itinerary. We will be in Adelaide as part of our trip-of-a-lifetime post-cruise tour of Australia, early next March. Our transpacific b2b will end in Sydney. After 5 days in Sydney, we’re flying to Kangaroo Island for a few days (renting a car & cottage), then flying into Adelaide for a few days.

South Australia is one of the few places you can easily get Sparkling Red wines.  If you have chance to sample some please do.
