Best Progreso Excursion?

My wife and I are cruising to Progreso over Christmas on The Dream. We are not really "hang out at the beach" kind of people. What excursion for Progreso would you recommend? We are interested in the ruins, but less interested in a 2 hour bus ride...

Check out autoprogreso's website. They are the company that provides free shuttles from the pier into town. They are going to be cheaper than carnival and they have a couple of options for Dzbilchaltun. One that just takes you to the ruins and another where you visit Meridia as well. It's a 45 minute ride to Meridia. Dzbilchaltun is less...like 30 minutes. But you're on the right track if you want to avoid a long bus ride...Dzibilchaltun is a lot closer than Uxmal and Chichen Itza.

Pregreso is a quaint, rustic kind of town. It has some nicer and some pretty rough areas. I wouldn't mind exploring on my own, but my wife would think it's not a safe place to explore. Like you the ruins were to far to transit to. Half the day is taken up on a bus. So we decided to do an all inclusive day at the Hotel Reef Yucatan. It's a beautiful all inclusive resort about 30-40 minutes from the pier. We had a great time. The food was tasty, and the drinks were great. And we'd do it again in a heartbeat. Here's a few pics I took on July 31 last summer of our all inclusive day:

 

It was a toss up between this or taking a tour of historic Colonial Merida, the State Capitol of Yucatan state. It sounded really interesting. And both are offered on Carnival's Shore Excursions.

Before they move this to the posts- one of the best excursions we have done on a Western Caribbean cruise was the Uxmal and Hacienda out of Progresso.  A lot of folks don't like Progresso because once in town, you are in Mexico, not the tourist Mexico.

We did this excursion in January, the second best was Chichen Itza, and after that was the Xcambo, salt flats, flamingoes and beach time.  We have been three times, and loved every excursion we have done in this port. We have two more cruises booked for this port-enjoy- don't just go to town-choose something-however, if you are there in the summer-it will be hot! 

 

I would not worry about a bus ride-how else are you going to see the country?  Nap on the way back.:classic_rolleyes:

When we ported in Progreso, we stayed local and had a great time.  The shuttle bus drops you off at the central Mercado.  Right there they have double-decker buses that will take you on an informative and interesting tour.  The view from the top is best.

After the tour we wandered the Mercado some, strolled the three blocks to the beach and had a beer, and then we were ready to head back to the ship before the lines built up.

We did the Mayapan ruins through Carnival and it was only about a 45 min bus ride, that was why we chose it, we did not want to go 2 hours either.  My boys absolutley loved it, it was awesome.  We got to see the ruins and the cenote was beautiful.  We also got to have an authentic lunch which was really good.  Also no worries with being with a Carnival excursion.

We booked it thru Carnival from our home about 3 or 4 weeks before we sailed. It's a really, really nice all inclusive resort.

This does look nice.I cannot tell from the pictures for sure, but is there direct walk from beach into the water access? I know we have been places where you must climb down a ladder from a wall to reach water and cannot enter directly from the beach.

Hi there! We are interested in this excursion on our upcoming Christmas cruise. After some reading, it looked like the bus trip was 1.5+ hours each way. Can you confirm how long the ride was? You mention it was only 45 minutes. If that is the case, we would for sure consider booking. Thanks!

I will second a trip to Uxmal. It was absolutely amazing, and one of the most memorable days EVER. Also, it was incredibly hot. There is a little restaurant at the site, and after thoroughly discovering the grounds, we drank enormous quantities of horchata.

It is a straight walk to the beach.
