With one exception, casino gambling, cash is not accepted on board for any purchases. All purchases run through your on board account or in some cases can be charged directly to a credit card.

The only thing I buy onboard is a cruise polo shirt. I don't drink other than the odd bottle of wine on the nights we eat in the MDR or steak house (whatever its name might be). On our 19 day Panama Canal Partial Transit we only ate in the MDR/specialty 3 nights.

My memory is I paid cash for the polo shirt, but perhaps not.

I don’t consider myself to fall into the tinfoil hat camp. I just like to keep my info secure from random strangers. I am looking for something to keep my medallion handy to take out and use when I want it and secure in my pocket when I don’t.  I prefer something small rather than a bulky wallet since one of the benefits to cruising is that I don’t need to carry my wallet all the time.

That works   But  we  put ours in the safe  and they came and changed the sensors in our cabin both of them as they thought they where not working   The one  n the bathroom is really disturbing

The original plan was to use the Medallions to control your lights (replacing the place-your-seacard-in-this-slot arrangement).  The sensor in the bathroom was so you didn't have to shower in the dark.

Do cabins not have light switches anymore?

So what you're saying is that anyone can look up a persons cabin by querying the touch screen - if you know their name. (unless they opt out of being found?)

No. It does not involve Medallion technology and is the same on ships without Medallion technology.

I'm sorry Ms. Know-it-All, I have sailed on 4 Medallion class ships so far. You make a lot of assumptions.

When I walked up to the display screen, I don't think it shows me what cabin I am in. It just shows you where you currently are.

We often see those directories in Malls and such that say "You are here." How does it know?

Consider this, it's not much different than going to Amazon/Walmart/insert merchant store here, coming to this site, or any other website really.  It's the same thing.

What we need to do as consumers is get smarter.  We know this tracking will occur, either on internet, or on our phones, or this device.   We learn to say no, or don't click on the ads that are targeted to you.

For me, I am looking forward to the technology, providing it gets me what I want/need better.  It's here, and that technology (like car fobs, smart watches, smart phones) will continue to adapt and improve in in the future.

We got a rental car with one of those fobs, at 1AM in Nova Scotia. We had no idea how to do anything. Luckily there was a manual in the glove box.

No Tom, they will NOT know where I ate, unless I go to a specialty restaurant. They won't know what I bought because the only things I buy on shipboard are things I pay cash for; no crummy art or over-priced jewelry.

Exactly where, and on which Princess ship, and how recently, did you buy ANYthing with cash?

This is rather important info, so please elaborate. None of the many pre-Medallion cruise cards I have show our cabin number, only our name, muster station, portfolio # etc. I'm curious as to how someone finding such a card can find out your cabin number? The Medallions we have also do not show cabin #s, so without accessing the TV screens to show the cabin #, how would one access this info?

Remember the names posted next to each door?

You may, of course, settle your bill with cash at debarkation.

okay if you want to join the tinfoil hat gang keep in mind that a certain mega box mart retailers uses qr chips for inventory control......  Theoretically if you bought say underpants (one of the items they do track) at this store a an employee could literally drive down the street and find out how many their customers are in a competitive box store. there is a sub code on qr inventory chips that can be tied to individual identities at check out. Like I say the technology exists and I have seen it demonstrated but can not testify as to its uses. I do know there are any number of colleges/universities that use qr chip technology for taking attendence....

They use QR Codes, not chips.

No, they can't. They are QR CODES.

I over simplified the qr code is embedded as an rfid chip (UPC doesn't work) for those who dislike self checkout the next phase will really raise some ire theoretically very similar to the ocean medallion one will be able to walk into a store with  their rfid debit card pick up what they want and walk out. There are variations already.

Yup.  But since it's being applied to your folio balance, it's not anonymous cash, is it?

You're  right. I was only trying to find a scenario where one could spend cash on a Princess. (Perhaps in the casino? I have no experience there.)

Currently on Caribbean Princess and they told my friend they no longer give the option of the cruise card.   Everyone has a medallion.  Just think of it as a coin sized card that opens your cabin if you wish and forget about all the other options.

If you do not want your spouse to locate you, you can turn that off.  Ask medallion desk for assistance if you need.

Privacy Concerns?
All information provided before and during your cruise will be encrypted and is not stored on your Ocean Medallion. The most advanced software security models, tools, and methods are fundamental to Ocean Medallion. However, any guest is also welcome to opt out of all services at any time.

My understanding is that my name and photo will pop up on screens throughout the ship when I am in close proximity.  I don't need pushy salespeople greeting me by name.  I have also seen mention of names and pictures being shown to your fellow passengers when you are waiting for an elevator.  Can I opt out of these features?  Maybe this is more of a concern to women than men.  I am not concerned that Princess knows where I ate dinner or what I bought since they would have already known that.

Then toggle the "safety only" option in your Medallion profile -- or ask the Purser's Desk to do it for you.
