I could see the cruise lines going to more of a dollar based system, or incorporating it.

The one time recently they tired it, 1 point was about $400 - that kind of system would really suck for folks trying to accumulate points on some cheap cruises.

That's how Celebrity does it

Good reason to reach Diamond on Royal before doing a Celebrity cruise, as you can only use your Royal status once to jump into a Celebrity status.  Some of their best cabins get 8 times the points of an inside.

Airlines have gone to a combo.  X miles and Y dollars for each level.

Mostly came about after some news stories about people making elite levels taking weird combos and spending very little money.

Not that many people were doing this.

This year I flew enough miles on Delta for Diamond, but not enough dollars (on partners you do not always get the full price credited).  And I am a bit too far away to take a weekend trip to make up the difference.  IIRC, Delta is 25,000 miles and $3000 for Silver, 50K and $6K for Gold, and 75K and $9K for Platinum.  Diamond jumps to 125K miles and $15K.

Huh? Celebrity gives you status based on your current Royal status (and vice-versa).  It's not a one time thing.  If you move up in one program, you'll get higher status in the other as well (except the highest level in each program.  That you have to earn the hard way).  Your actual points for each cruise line are earned separately.

Actually the two highest levels don't translate between the cruise line.  Elite Plus/Zenith and Diamond Plus/Pinnacle must be earned.
