Update on Royal Albatross web cam at Dunedin

Recommended Posts

The Royal Albatross web cam that also gives a great view of cruise ships entering the harbour at Taiaroa Heads , Dunedin , is having a massive makeover .

Dept of Conservation is working in conjunction with Corning University , New York and the new cam will join their system and be viewed by millions worldwide.
The cam is down at the moment while the update takes place . Should go “live” shortly.

Unfortunately for cruise ship watching, only superstucture of ships can be seen as they pass by at present nesting position.

Thanks for the tip . I checked it out with the time bar and see what you mean. Here is Noordam passing through.

The Royal Cam's Facebook page and Twitter account, linked here, https://www.doc.govt.nz/royalcam. Post clips of the more happening events...recent hatching, placement of hatched chick back into the nest, daily weighing of chick, etc. they have posted ships as well.  Watching live a few days ago about 7:40am local time, Saw a Viking ship enter port. Assume ships stay off shore until close to docking time to save fees? Watching the live cam is addictive. Thanks to the NZ conservation dept for providing.

The Otago Harbour channel is fairly tricky. The ships have to wait for a harbour pilot to board them before entering the harbour, they can't just go in when it suits them.
