Latest earthquake - San Juan?

PR can't catch a break.  Reading an article in the paper today, that the locals are upset with the government that they are slow to react to the latest disaster. Have they sorted out all the damage from the hurricane yet??

I’m more concerned about the people of Puerto Rico than cruise ship stops there, sorry.

There are some isolated areas due to the rocks that have fallen and they are stranded.

Puerto Rico is in dire straits 😞

The earth quakes -- so far -- are not affecting cruise ships.  I can't remember if there are any tours scheduled for that side of the island.

Power was shut off right away for that area.

I agree. People first.   They should be feeling the quakes  (at least the stronger ones) in San Juan.

From Pete and Judy's World Cruise Blog:

EARTHQUAKE AT SEA

Early this morning about 7AM our time, the ship shuddered as if we hit a large wave.  I was up and felt this, but didn’t think anything of it.  During the Captain’s noon announcement he announced that this morning we were sailing near Puerto Rico, very close to the epicenter of a magnitude 6.0 earthquake and that is what caused the ship to shudder.  He said this was only the second time in his career when he was able to feel an earthquake while at sea.

Of course I am concerned about the people in Puerto Rico!  I didn't mean to imply I wasn't, however, when I posted my question, I hadn't seen or heard much on the news, and now there is obviously more information.  I am also concerned about traveling anywhere during this stressful time with Iran.  However, it is my only annual vacation and I do have $$ invested in it, so my inquiry was to try and gather information to make a decision about our cruise.  I am sorry if I offended anyone or came across as not caring, for truly I do.  As I have found in the past, many commentors here on CruiseCritic are fast with critical comments and snarky replies.

I understood that you are concerned about the people there.  If I were going there I too would be wondering if we should or would stop there.  I really would not want to get off the ship knowing that the ground could be moving under my feet.  I would just keep informed by looking at the USGS web site to see how strong the quakes are.  The after shock could last for some time.

I hope you have a wonderful cruise.

First and foremost concern for people’s safety. The other concern I have is for their livelihood.  Many people count on the tourists from the cruise ships to make a living. While I am not going to knowingly put myself in danger, I do try to visit places that have experienced these kinds of disasters. I hope I am not being insensitive in doing so.

another earthquake in Puerto Rico.  Will this affect any port stops in San Juan?  it looks like it hit on the other side of the island, but wondering about how HAL handles these types of weather issues.  Thanks!

As inaccuratly as it is someimes, weather can  be predicted.  NOt so, earthquakes, yet.I would 'guess' all cruise lines and Captains   will get assesments of damage and  risks before any   decisions on port calls can/ will be made.  Apparently, according to this thread title, there  are stil lactive quakes on- going  How could any of us answer you as to port stops in San Juan if the ground is still shaking.

Those who have scheduled calls there, keep checking.

San Juan is a favorite   Caribbean port of mine and I have visited  there for lengthy hotel/resort stays as well as a  great many times on ships.  the people of San Juan Puerto Rico are in my thoughts and prayers.  They had not yet fully recovered from all the hurricane damage,

Still active quakes in Puerto Rico.  This could last for a while.

What I also find interesting is the intensity map of some of the quakes.  This info on the site is give by  the  Modified Mercalli Intensity scale.  It shows you how the quake was felt in different parts of the island

Our upcoming cruise on the NS is in a few weeks (Feb 2)  and one port of call is Puerto Rico.  I have spoken with my PCC a couple times to see if HAL has made any decisions regarding PR and each time I’m told no news from HAL. The PCC said passengers would probably hear via email if there were a change in itinerary faster than he would. 🤔

My heart goes out to the people of PR as it just seems to be one natural disaster after another for the island. Very sad.

I'd be  very surprised if  any such decisions are made  soon.  There are still on- going quakes.  NO one can asses what damage or risk there is until all damage actually occurs  😯  It has to be  a  wait and see situation.    be a little patient  The people of Puerto Rico are more concerned about  their safety,  families, homes, businesses and their life getting  back to something resembling  normal        Missing a cruise port call is rather tiny in comparison  IMO

As someone who was raised in San Juan I still have a number of friends on the island (50 years later)   I have spoken to a couple of them over the last few days (including this morning), and got the following:

1) Many aftershocks.   and after each the power goes out.  (Is purposefully shut down) The power company then checks facilities, trunk lines and local lines and the power comes on little by little as they see it's safe to do so.  This can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours.  It has happened EVERY day for 4 days now.

2)  The earthquakes are centered off the opposite side of the island from San Juan, so while they felt the tremors in San Juan, no damage in that area.  (Or at the airport ).

Tonight's CBS news traveled along with New York Gov Cuomo to PR and they showed some of what the poor citizens are dealing with.  It is heartbreaking.  However, they depend on tourism for their economy and they so want the cruise ships to still dock and sail out of their port.  So, we shall hope for the best, visit their island and give them what revenue we can with all that we are blessed with.

Great  info, cruise nut.

I'll look for a CBS re-broadcast and  try to catch it.

Thanks for sharing info

More, by far,  about San Juan  than I have seen for days..

Most of the reporting is on social media,  David Begnaud from CBS.

One of WGN's Chicago reporters (Around Town specialist) is from Puerto Rico.

Again... The "Puerto Rico" we know as cruise passangers has not been TOUCHED.   All damage and effected areas are on the far side of this (LARGE) Island.

The ONLY effects in the San Juan area are sporadic power outages which are normally short in duration.  Remember that the "media" is looking for a story... the jucier the better, so take all of that with a grain of salt.
