If the web address starts with https it is a secure connection from your browser to the site.  If is is http it may not be secure.

Also, once you go to the site, before you enter your info, look at the address bar. If you see an icon like a closed padlock, you have a secure connection.  I just noticed CC is a secure connection.

The other option is to use a VPN.   However there have been some reports of some VPNs being blocked on some ships.

I would most definitely NOT bank or look at confidential email (or any email) using any public internet connection (such as what the ship provides).

As to why people purchase it, perhaps they want to read news articles, catch up on sports...MANY things do not require a password.

We read our hometown newspaper on the internet now. I try not to do more than that while cruising, but I do need the paper every morning.

Some of us still need to work and do banking, especially when on board for an extended period.   In the old days used ship computer to check email and told the office would do it once a day.  Easy to avoid work on a 7 day trip.  These days with wifi available and laptops life is so different.   Also travel for longer periods now that we're retired....or at least I don't go to an office anymore!  More need for wifi these days.  Work in the cabin.  No wifi on balcony, at least not on Anthem.  Otherwise wifi ok.

Do you pay with cash ? If not RCI is using your credit card on the internet AND not just one time either 🙄

Then you don't do anything on the internet?

And how secure is your network at home?

My research has shown that https traffic can be intercepted and decrypted.

It is not easy this is one place where it was discussed.

https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/213921/how-can-kazakhstan-perform-mitm-attacks-on-all-https-traffic

I believe a VPN if you can make the connection would be more secure.  I would not use a free VPN or one that offered lifetime VPN for a small fee.  They have to run a certain number of servers and make money so just do the math.

Many company computer networks have a similar setup so they can control and see what the employees are doing

teamviewer connecting back to a computer at home could be a better solution.

teamviewer is free for personal use and they they make a lot of $$$ on the commercial side.

Simple answer is I check my email but don't do banking as a matter of routine.  However I have a 28 day trip coming up and may need to do it to pay bills or trust my daughter to pay my bills 🙂

So hackers or daughter?

I would also do Daughter, but I paid  for them all to come on the cruise, and the I am taking them to Disney for 2 days so work emails will just have to wait ,  I did set up,rules so it will be easy to remove the crap , and I have a work phone w a hot spot so I will use that when we get off the boat...

Yes, that was Max.  A small Akita.  About 130 pounds. 😄

The only way to be 100% safe is to never, ever enter a personal/financial user name and password while connected to ANY public wifi. You'd just be asking for trouble.

But is RCI *public* WiFi? This isn’t like a cafe where someone could set a malicious hot spot up and transfer data to a different pipe. RCI controls the only way off the ship for data.  Now, you could have a MITM attack but that could happen with any network, not just public ones.  and this one would be especially hard.

Yes, a VPN would be the best approach, but as others have said there are reports of some not working.

If you are truly that worried, fix it on the other end: setup an independent bank account that would limit any damage from a hacker.

I could set up a hotspot advertise the RCL SSID and pass it on to the RCL wifi perfect Man in the Middle attack.  There could also be workers that did the same things.

Yes you could.  But you would need to be in the right place at the right time for one of the few people accessing something worth hacking.

And not get caught.

SO you all are concerned about internet security..  SO you all operating with a cash account.??? 🤣😂

Of course not.  RCI does have my credit card number, but if that is compromised, there are protections in place (like from the credit card company) that prevent me from incurring any loss.

RCI does not have access to any of my user names or passwords, which is what people are warning about.
