The term you are using is a term used in the 70's and 80's. They are now flip flops.

To me, flip flops are the cheap, rubber shoes you wear to the beach.  My thong sandals have a heel  and are made of wood , leather, and sparkles! Can I wear them?

Of course you can. People are overthinking this whole thing.

Curious as to a definition of flip flops.  I have lots of fancy thong sandals.  Would they be considered flip flops?

1. Flip flops have soles that are loosely held by a Y-shaped strap while sandals have soles that are firmly held by thongs or straps. 2. Flip flops are usually flat-soled while sandals are either flat or fashioned with heels.

Hope this helps.

CynCyn I think you're overthinking this. In Japan 2017 it was all sequins and velvet 5" heels. But in all other locations it wasn't nearly that decked out. Your sandals are more than fine and you'll find people a lot less dressed up
