Will the buffet disappear with new changes ?

I'd like to see Purell or wipes on each table so you can clean your hands again before you start to eat.

Please please look at what successful people are doing regarding mitigating COVID, and learn from those that are smack dab in the middle of the problem. Obviously NYcruzzer in in the middle of the hot zone and knows exactly the right answer. There is no other answer than what he/she has said.

 

I don't mind being challenged on this, but I believe there is no negotiation to the following requirements in future WJ:

 

1. The moment you enter, you must don a mask. It will be provided by RCL (we pay for it in cruise fare). You will be strictly and enforceably not allowed to enter the WJ without wearing one, and you will be immediately escorted out if you take it off other than when you are seated at your table to eat. PERIOD.
2. The moment you enter, you will also be given gloves. And like the masks above, you will not be allowed to take them off until you are leaving the WJ entrance. Only at the exit will you immediately sanitize your hands with Purrell... not at the table.
3. The only utensils you will ever touch... EVER!!!... are your own fork and knife. You will never ever ever touch a general serving utensil. Only staff will be able to touch those, and thus only staff will be serving WJ food from now on.

 

I believe with the above I've outlined the exact issue and how to mitigate it very well.

Makes for very a pleasant 7 day cruising/dining experience, doesn't it?

I wonder what the CDC would think?

Then it would follow that in order to mitigate it very well, masks and gloves should be worn at every venue not just the WJ.  Same requirements for casino, pool area, bars, and all public places and anytime you are outside your cabin.  Is this likely to happen?  NOT

I don't know about the CD  but I think if those types of precautions need to be taken then the ships shouldn't be sailing. If masks need to be worn in the Jammer it is inconceivable that they are not needed everywhere else on the ship other than your cabin. I'd be more concerned in an elevator than I would be in the Windjammer. If your concern is droplets, I have far more conversations with people in lounges than I do in the Windjammer.

Bars yes.... theatre, pool and casino no food or drink served so that you cannot ingest anything that someone else could put you at risk. Enter the theatre, you must disinfect hands or are not allowed entry... same with exiting, you will not be allowed to exit unless you disinfect hands.

Totally understood.... so maybe cruisers are not at all allowed out of their cabins without masks, else they'll be quaranteened.

Again, an enjoyable and comfortable cruising experience.

You can get it airborne as well so yes, you would have to wear a mask at all those venues as well as gloves since you are touching slot machines, poker tables, chairs, railings, etc etc. and the need for masks is obvious since you can never be six to twelve feet away from anyone for the duration of the entire cruise.

So people who do prefer it should go without because you don't like it. I can't stand the MDR. I would not want to see it go as I know people look forward to it. Besides, if they got rid of it they would probably convert it to more cabins.🙄😉

Certainly do-able on small to midsize ships but the WJ has always been a problem on Oasis class and changes to service style would likely require changes in its infrastructure

We always thought those who bring plates of uncovered food, or even eat in the elevators  were gross. We seem to see many ride with a plate of pizza. 
 

We rarely  eat in windjammer but if we do (or use the buffet in the MDR breakfast or lunch, ) I try to use one plate for my meal and another plate -face down-to act as a cover until I got back to the table. 
 

For years, we‘ve used sanitizer after using buffet tongs or even after using a menu. 

it will be interesting to see if any food servicing protocols are are implemented.

The only way I see this working is limited selections of pre plated food wrapped in cellophane.   I don't know where the cruise line would get all of these masks and latex gloves suggested. Hospitals still can't get them. People are getting creative with scarves and bandanas when going to the supermarket. I also wonder how the food supply would be in general. The supermarkets are out of basics.  The meal plan we subscribe to missed our delivery yesterday and last week they gave us different meals than what we ordered because they couldn't get the ingredients. If cruising starts up as soon as some think it's going to be devastatingly different. After reading some of these suggestions I think I will sit the first round out.

I can envision that passenger eating in the Windjammer being assigned a designated server, no more self serve.

P and O Australia has been doing away with buffets for a few years now. They have what is basically a large food court with up to a dozen different outlets. All food is prepared fresh, and served to you by staff.

I have not sailed on one of their ships, so can't comment personally, but most things I read suggest the passengers actually prefer this. We are also talking about smaller ships, so not sure how it would work on an Oasis class, but for P & O it seems to be working.

Don’t forget, that on many of the ships, there is a small buffet in the main dining room for breakfast and lunch.  Those sitting in the main dining room for breakfast and lunch have a choice of ordering from the menu, getting something from the small buffet, or even both.  We may see changes in this process also

Am I missing something? Waiting 6 months (late Fall) and reading reports seems to be more on the cautious side.

How is everyone eating and drinking with a mask on? Are they going to make markers 6 ft  apart using tape like they do in the supermarket? Will the stairs and decks be one way causing you to walk out of your way to get to where you are going like in the supermarket?  I wouldn't advise the deluxe drink package because it will take forever to get a drink since you wouldn't be able to crowd the bar. The lines are long enough now. I can't imagine how long they would be with a six foot distance between passengers.   There is no way cruising can commence with social distancing at this level.

Touching your mask every time you have to put a fork full in your mouth or take a sip is a big no no when it comes to contamination.

 

I wonder what the Disney parks will come up with that can help the cruise industry?  Even though the parks have more space to maneuver, they have to deal with crowds in restaurants, close seating on rides and long lines waiting to ride.
