StLouisCruisers Posted June 2, 2021 #27 Share Posted June 2, 2021 In 2013 Diamond Princess stopped in Phu My and we began a tour which included a village temple, a market, a home visit, a whale temple and lunch at a seaside resort. Some shots of the village temple along with our guide. Then a stop at the market in case we were out of anything.😄 If that market was out of rice paper for spring rolls, never fear! We stopped at this woman's home where she was busy making some. Here is where she lays them to dry. She was fast and talented at it. Here's a batch of them drying outside. Our guide showed us what they would look like in use in the kitchen. Looks good! One lucky guy volunteered to try his skill at making rice paper. Check out his results! I guess practice really does make perfect. Rice paddies seen from our bus. Next we headed into this family home to see what life was like there. In the main living area they had a shrine to their departed relatives. Then on to their kitchen with their family "pet" pig nearby. Time for a snack in the garden. Just fruit, no pig! Next up was the seaside resort for lunch. It was called Binh An Resort. Here are two plates of their buffet items we had chosen After dining we strolled their grounds and took photos. From there we drove along the coast, stopping to take photos of the fishermen bringing in their catch at Front Beach in Vung Tau. We continued on to the Whale Temple. They had whale bones in glass cases along with their offerings of money to the whales. I think that covers the tour from Phu My to Vung Tao. We haven't been back to Vietnam in the last 8 years. Even when younger I never liked running, but I can walk all day. 😄 Rocky Road was my Dad's favorite ice cream. I've never cared for it -- I don't care for marshmallows even if it's in chocolate ice cream. 😉 We've had some good dentists over the years and have appreciated all of them. @kazuI have some red peony-like tulips and love them! People passing by couldn't believe they were tulips. Dashing around this morning, it's our younger grandson's 6th birthday today and I'm taking some cupcakes to their house this morning. Yesterday his older brother got the cast put on his arm -- it was a hard day for him, as they had to put a lot of pressure on his arm to get things lined up correctly. I did not get to the computer until about 4:30 and that was to order Papa Murphy pizza for dinner. I started looking at the Daily at around 10:30 pm. As I was about to post a photo of us approaching Honolulu (Oosterdam, 2017), the power went out! It was off for a couple of hours in our area; no idea what caused it. It was 59F at 7:30 this morning, but as soon as it warms up some, I will be out trimming bushes and working outside before the rains return tomorrow. I don't run anymore, not that I ran much when I was younger. I like rocky road ice cream as it is basically chocolate with nuts and marshmallows added. Not sure I love my dentist, but I really like him. He bought the practice several years ago, and is very patient with nervous patients. We'll pass on the meal, but the planters punch and wine might be good. It is an interesting quote today. @StLouisCruisers Sandi, your family and your DS are in our thoughts. Hope your DB has a date for his procedure. @smitty34877 Sorry Tana's fever has returned. Hope the test helps the doctors find an answer to help her. We have been to Phu My and Ho Chi Minh City once on the Coral Princess in 2018. Our call there in 2003 on the old Regal Princess was cancelled due to SARS. I'll try to not duplicate any pictures. This was the sight our our window as we arrived in the container port. A couple of pictures as the bus headed for Ho Chi Minh City. Street scenes as we drove to our first stop Our first stop was the War Remnants Museum. It is amazing how much equipment we had to leave behind. It is an interesting, but desturbing museum which also covers the time since the fall of Saigon. The saddest thing was people are still being affected by agent orange. The Vietnamese call it the American War. The girl in the second picture making the peace sign, wanted to have her picture taken with me. We also stopped at another museum dedicated to Ho Chi Minh. Our next stop was a plaza with the cathedral and the post office. We couldn't go in the church because of renovations. The plaza also had a McDonalds where many on the bus went. The post office While we were waiting to reboard the bus at the post office, DH asked our guide where the American Embassy had been. We could just see it in the distance. This is the top portion where the helicopters landed on April 30, 1975 After our lunch buffet at a modern hotel, we had the "obligatory" shopping stop. After wandering through some of the stores, we went across the street and joined most of our group relaxing in the air conditioned Grand Hotel. Wish it had been the Rex Hotel. Our final stop was the former Presidential Palace. Here are a few pictures from inside and from the underground bunker, which had offices for the top officials.. The South Vietnamese president's office and limo Back at the port, we sat on our balcony and watched a ship being unloaded and all the activity. sailingdutchy Posted June 2, 2021 #35 Share Posted June 2, 2021 We have had the pleasure to get to Phu My a couple of times and the last time was on Jan 23, 2020 , which was our very last cruise ……...on the legendary Westerdam , the ship that the BBC on the news called the “Phantom “ ship because we were roaming the sea's for so long trying to find a port that would except us to get back on land ......... This was just a couple of days before Chinese New Year so I might need a couple of posts to show my pictures going on a small group tour with Nguyen Tri Dung . From the port we went directly to Ho Chi Minh City ( the former Saigon ) On the Rooftop garden of the REX Hotel with our group of cruise friends....... @bobpatj Ho Chi Minh Dressed for the New Year In the background from the French Colonial time the railway station Thousands and thousands of bikes weaving between the traffic On my special request Dung took us to the " Heavenly Lady Temple “ which happened to be in a very festive state ! The pictures of Ho Chi Minh City and Phu My bring back a lot of memories. I have only been in Vietnam once on a cruise aboard the QE2. We actually flew in from Cambodia after a land tour of Angkor Wat (2 days), stayed over night at a hotel in Ho Chi Minh city, did an extensive city tour and then went on to Phy My to return to the ship. We visited many of the places already mentioned. What I very clearly remember was that the traffic out of HCM city to Phu My was terrible and it took us much longer than planned. We made one bathroom stop on the way at one of the worst "bathrooms" I have ever been in - and I have been some pretty awful ones. I considered burning my shoes when I got back to the ship. Our mountain lion seems to be hanging about.... not a good thing. He/she was spotted yesterday at a more in town location. About 5 years ago we had a Mama and 2 cubs who also hung in town and unfortunately had to be put down when they relocated themselves to a spot very near an elementary school. Everyone felt terrible about that. Hope this is a young male on the move and he keeps on moving south which seems to be way he is heading. I had a tour to a kind of war museum where the main attraction was the tunnels used by the Vietnamese soldiers. I was thinking I had actually walked in one of the tunnels but that wasn't true; one of the guides just demonstrated getting into the tunnel. I wore myself out the last two days with yard work (lots of sore muscles) so I think I'll relax today (plus it's going to rain later today, and tomorrow and Friday) and I will be getting a haircut this afternoon. I'm still going to wear a mask in the salon. @StLouisCruisers continued prayers for your DSis and DB. @smitty34877 I hope they can get to the bottom of Tana's issues. Rocky Road is a very good ice cream but not in my top tier (I am a mint chip fanatic). I love my dentist but the best feling is when I leave after a cleaning and exam with no further work required. They say our rainy season has begun but we are still waiting for our first good rain here. Tonight my band gets together for a practice. It has been more than a year since we had a gig. Wrong turn off …... turn around guys otherwise we will never have lunch ..... We made it to Pho 2000 the place that American Presidents ( Clinton and Obama ) have made famous ! My inside pictures came out all upside down , blame it on iPad , we had a nice simple lunch ......sorry After lunch to the market ........ lets try this on …..what….. $ 15.00 ….DW bought the nice red one ... wonder how often she will wear it ....looking good dear ! For New Year everybody was buying large flowering branches or trees . To the lacquer place .... standard tour stop . The former Palace now the Independence Palace , we chose not to go to the war museum . Than to the Post office and to see the exterior of The Notre Dame of Saigon both from the old French Indochina days . A great day was had by all . Hey those guys look familiar from this morning . The fare was something like $100, but the driver had to have $40 up front before we left the port. I asked him why and he said he had to pay the "taxi mafia". I was thinking "so much for your communist paradise." My first trip to the area was in July, 1970. Flew from Travis AFB on Slick Airways and landed in Saigon. Spent the night there and then flew in a small plane to a Swift Boat base called Cat Lo, near Vung Tau. Stayed there a few days waiting for my ship (USS Hector AR-7) to arrive in Vung Tau where I was to be the new electronics repair officer. Stayed on the ship 3 years and made another trip to Vietnam in 1972. Vung Tau was described as a French resort town. We were there for 6 months repairing U.S. and South Vietnam Navy ships. I didn't see it that way. The VA says I was most likely exposed to Agent Orange in that area. We have also been to other ports in Vietnam such as Halong Bay and Hanoi. I enjoyed them much better. Even the people seemed friendlier especially since my DW was mugged while walking in Saigon. He tried to get her gold chain, but was not successful. Now she knows why she shouldn't wear jewelry in some of the ports. Not sure why the asterisks happened with the other half of the item but this is the 100th anniversary of the massacre of hundreds of black Americans in a prosperous district of Tulsa, Oklahoma, an event which has been suppressed from our history books for almost the entire intervening century. President Biden took part in a ceremony there recognizing the last 3 survivors of the event. The stars represent the name of the district where it happened, a name which translates among other things to unseasoned wood and a singer whose first name is Lee. I can't imagine what problems the CC algorithm had with the word but I got burned by copying from a document and not looking after the post came out. Another balmy somewhat muggy morning in western Washington state, but weather forecasters are predicting a sudden shift and by the weekend it'll be 30 degrees cooler with showers. I will take it. They keep warning us about fire season, I don't want another summer of breathing in smoke, 2020 was terrible with that. I have beautiful teeth now, but there was a time when I didn't and I have not so great memories of getting yelled at by dentists and even humiliated in front of an entire waiting room by one particular evil medusa like person....thankfully the one I have now is an absolute dream. Love the couscous salad, I think I actually had that on one of my cruises, very light and refreshing. Prayers and thoughts to all that need them. Special thanks to all the listers that make our days delightful. Looks like an interesting port, and loving the pictures everybody posts, but I have to be careful about what I eat/drink locally in most places. I ordered my new luggage, well suitcase, yesterday. Is it still called luggage if it's a single piece? Or is luggage plural? This one is a 26, much larger than my current 21. I paid more for a pattern this time. I know....why spend so much on something that sits in a closet for 11 months of the year, but, well, yolo! Well I guess I better start my work for the day. Have a great Wednesday everyone! Was I wrong about that? Actually, the Catholic Church who ran the school are the ones who “swept it under the rug”. The bodies were just discovered and all of Canada is horrified. I took Pat to the hospital at one for his "Roto-Rooter" appointment at 2, after all the miserable prep. That was fine. But at 2:30 the electricity went off at home. I had no idea that the phones wouldn't work! I expected a call around 5, and wasn't too worried, but it got later and later and I went to a neighbour to see what was going on there. They had no electricity either, of course, but said about 300 homes were involved and it was due back on at 9:30. I was preparing to go to the hospital and just hang around outside when Pat rolled up in a taxi! He had been calling from about 4, and also emailing (I had 11 phone messages and 2 emails this morning!) The nurses had finally got him a voucher for a taxi ride home. He was not happy. DD went out and got MacDonald's for us for dinner (all the food she had prepped and was marinating is still in the fridge), and the lights eventually came on at 10:10. By this time, Pat had gone to bed, and evidently the lights went off again sometime after. Pat woke me up to tell me the Russians had hacked the electricity again - I've never seen our room so dark. I lay awake for some time worrying about all the food in the freezers - fortunately, thanks to CC, I had transferred all the ice in the ice maker to the freezer in the fridge, and this morning it was still intact, so I think the food is okay. The doctor's report says Pat will not need to have another colonoscopy, although he removed 4 polyps - I guess they will be biopsied. Anyway, we are happy it's all over, and we are just hoping the Russians don't hack us again! We have been to Phu My, my pictures a much like the others - enjoyed looking at them, especially Tony's very colourful ones. I found it a rather sad country, and have no yearning to go back. I'll include in my prayers special ones for everyone who needs them among my Daily friends.
