Does this have to be spent on a new booking or can you purchase gift cards for the deal?

DW got the offer on our amexBlue card.  I agree that it implies a new reservation, but decided to go  ahead and make a payment on our already booked August 2022 HAL cruise.  As soon as the payment went is this morning, we got an email from Amex "Great news! You recently used your Amex Offer at HOLLAND AMERICA RES" .  If it did work, Amex will have contributed $400 to our Iceland/Greenland cruise next summer.   If the statement credit does not show up, the payment was still needed.  The offer details state that the statement credit would arrive within 90 days after 12/31/2021.

Please let us know, might be worth opening one just for this promo.

I’m sorry I was having problem posting

@roxybear135we have used Amex offer to pay for existing booking without any problem before. Most recently in Sept for a NCL cruise. Once you use it to pay you should get an email from Amex stating you have use this offer.

Thanks for letting me know. We actually booked a casino rate cabin so we don’t owe anything on it but I wanted to buy beverage packages and spa passes. Any idea if that would work if I purchase those with my Amex?

I once bought OBC with an Amex offer after the cruise was paid off, and I did get the Amex credit.

Update.  The $1500 I paid on a previously booked cruise on Oct 20th showed up as a $400 credit on by Amex Blue statement on Oct 21st.  So...  the 90 days after Dec 31st and the booking window did not cause an issue.  Now I just wish that one of our other Amex cards had the same offer.

That is great to know. I will have to think about opening an account. Too bad it doesn't appear on my Delta Reserve card.

AMEX no longer allows people to have the same offer on more than one card (there used to be a loophole, but they closed it). HOWEVER, if your spouse or anyone else has an authorized user card on your account, you/they can login to their AMEX account, and they may/should have the same offer on their card, which you can then use again. If they do not have an AMEX login, just create one.

The only exception to the one offer per person is if you have a card that has Membership Rewards points, in which case this offer might be available with a points promotion instead of cash back. I got an offer for cash back on Oceania on my Blue Cash Preferred card, and then got the same offer with points back on my Blue card. My wife got the same offers. The good news is that I have an expensive Oceania cruise to pay for next year, so I'll be able to use all four offers.

I did not receive the WLCL/HAL offer on any of my cards, possibly because I have redeemed it many times previously. I did receive a $100/500 offer for Celebrity, and recently got one for NCL. I should be able to use the Celebrity offer on cruises I have booked for next year, although most of it will be paid with FCC's.

And as has been said a few times here, the "new reservations" is never enforced. To be honest, they have absolutely no way of knowing that it's a new or existing reservation, so there is no way it could be.

Any idea if I use the deal to buy beverage packages if I would be able to get the statement credit?  We booked a casino deal so we don't owe anything for the cabin but want to buy beverage packages and a spa pass.

Someone above said they had experience where buying OBC counted towards the offer in the past, and I also found that to be the case. But I don't think anyone has tried it with this offer. It really depends on how it posts and whether it comes through looking like a cruise payment. I recall it did not work on Carnival because it posted differently there. What I did when I tried it was to buy the smallest amount of OBC that I could and see how it posted, then buy enough to trigger the offer.

I assume you can cancel your purchase if the AMEX offer is not triggered, so it's easy enough to try.  Or purchase OBC and buy the drink package and spa pass on board. You can always get the excess OBC refunded after your cruise (but make sure you don't use an AMEX card that you used the offer on, or they may take back the offer credit you received).

Yes, I was the one who posted that I used it successfully for buying OBC. (We actually already had OBC and was wondering if we could use it up and would AMEX claw back tbe offer, but then DW wanted the most expensive Anne of Green Gables tour and all the OBC disappeared.) This was a second offer, and actually on a previous one both of us had the offer and used it to pay for the cruise, so we in effect used it 3 times on the same cruise.

I was able to use the similar RCL AMEX offer to purchase soda pkg and dining pkg for the 3 of us and it worked.  It seems that as long as the charges show up from the cruise line, they allow it.

As I said, it varies by cruise line. I'm fairly sure that people reported in past deals that it did not work on Carnival because it posted as Fun Shops and not Carnival.
