Thanks for that, I think on the balance of things, I'll take the dinner suit for formal nights, trousers and shirts or polo's for the casual. I would imagine some nights won't go to the mdr so am I right in saying the buffet options would be ok wear shorts + t shirt? Would also be ok to wear shorts + t shirt on casual nights in the theatre and entertainment areas?

Maybe not shorts in the entertainment areas. For example The Glass House on Azura and Ventura remains casual on formal nights but they did require people wearing shorts to leave after 6 pm, allowing them to finish their drink/meal of course.

Things may be different on Iona which has few formal venues. Basically the main MDR's, Epicurian and Sindu restaurants plus The Crows Nest and Andersons bars. Surprisingly on Britannia the Glass House remained formal which might be because of the Captains talk in the adjacent atrium. Those talks are not taking place now and I doubt if they will return, in fact Iona does not have a venue where you could hold them except perhaps the Skydome.

Maybe best to stick with trousers/smart jeans/shirt for the evening

I thought the "rules" said no shorts in any public venue after 6pm, unless cruising in the Caribbean?

I think the ‘rules’ are rapidly disappearing, Wowzz, as a new generation of cruisers takes over.

I’m not at all keen on being forced to wear DJ/dark suit just to be able to eat in a decent dining area, but I’m equally disenchanted with the idea of jeans and shorts. I’m a smart casual fan.

No logic behind those views, though - just personal taste, and personal tastes vary from person to person.  Not long now, I suspect, before people can choose to wear what they want, when they want, and given that these are people’s holidays, paid for out of hard earned savings, it’s difficult to argue against that.

I really have no issues with shorts, although personally I think they are out of place in the MDR.

However, I do think that P&O should strictly enforce a no socks rule when wearing shorts !

Are sports socks equally unacceptable with trainers and shorts?

I wear trainer socks that basically stop before your ankle, so to all purposes it looks as if you are not wearing socks at all.

I’m not desperately bothered by what other people are wearing, though I’ll admit to metaphorically raising an eyebrow or two, sometimes.

However, something which really, really bothers me is people coming in from the sun decks, wearing brief clothing but liberal, greasy, sun creams on their arms and legs and sitting on upholstered seats. This risks the next unwitting user of that seat ending up with grease on their evening finery, potentially ruining a special dress or necessitating a £10 cleaning bill for a dinner suit

I have to wear socks so choose brightly coloured ones. On one TA the casino team were betting on what colour the next day 😁

I’m asking on behalf of my husband…. Is it acceptable to wear smart tailored shorts in the MDR for breakfast or lunch?

Also nothing to do with clothes, but are you allowed to take a corkscrew in your luggage?
Thanks

Can't answer about shorts in the MDR, but we always take a corkscrew on board, with no problems.

Absolutely fine!

Not aware of any issues with corkscrews, but others will know.

Always take a corkscrew with me never had a problem.

From a ladies viewpoint I like smart, nothing like a man in a suit. BUT hate to see some of said men clawing at their shirt collar all night and looking like they wished the night was over before it began. For me Grappau and especially the glamorous Pauline are my dress gurus.

I have worn them in the MDR at lunch , and have not been alone in doing so ,not so sure about breakfast as its been a few years since we had breakfast in the MDR , a definite  no no in the evening

I feel sure tailored shorts would be fine for breakfast and lunch anywhere on board, indeed all day long.  I am certainly used to them on a so-called luxury line.  I am sure more comfortable than heavy jeans in hot weather, and most men have nice legs!

On our last cruise stood in my shorts I remember saying to the Mrs ..

..... " I'm not sure about this , my legs feel as if they are being watched " :classic_unsure:

Corkscrew is fine, shorts, only if he has good legs and short socks.🧦

(NOT sleep shorts)

My husband doesnt even have a cup of coffee and breakfast before getting showered and dressed so no chance of him going rogue in his sleepwear 😊

We're hoping the weather will be nice enough for him to wear shorts during the day!

One of those men would be me, the only time in the last 20 or so years I have worn a shirt with a tie is for weddings or on a cruise. My employer removed the need to wear a suit or collar and tie in 1998, I own 1 suit, which has been worn about 5 times, plus a Dinner Suit which cost me £30 from George at ASDA in 2012, but is looking shabby after soup was spilt on it on our last cruise, I have zero intention of replacing it.
