We have not gotten any information yet... Although we have been told it was in the works early yesterday. We have been in covid ward cabin and knew we would be disembarked in SF. Our origin flights were through princess and we assured repeatedly  BEFORE vancouver was cancelled that they would make changes and let us know. We could /should have just booked our own flights. Now there is only a late night visible on Expedia. Last we were told is that flight information will be delivered to stateroom by 7pm. I'll believe it when I see it. Been a frustrating wait.

Can you fly with COVID?

No, they arrive just for the shipyard for this ship.

The workers come in on a H2-B temporary work visa, applied for by the sub-contracting company, based on their experience in cruise ship renovations, and the lack of equivalent qualified workers in the US.

So they do not “live on the ship”.

So happy you are here and able to deflate the “self styled experts” who seem to always insist on making misguided and wholly uninformed  “authoritative” pronouncements. On everything! 🤣

I suspect they have embarked a few hundred contractors to begin the work that will be done in the shipyard, things like taking out all the carpeting, moving furniture from cabins for carpeting, or for renewal of upholstery.  I have experienced a two day "dead-head" cruise with contractors tearing the ship apart, with 10 or so dumpsters on deck, that were filled before we got to the shipyard.  As I say, with today's supply chain problems, they may now need more time at the end of the shipyard, when late arriving materials arrive, so let's get the prep work done sooner.

I always respect your comments and knowledge of nautical field.

I have read many reports of work starting before actual dry dock.

But, I’m not buying it for the reason of two day notice to passengers for a industry really hurting for cash.

in addition to that and because of this extremely short notice, on top of Princess not getting the revenue now they had to pay out of pocket all the flights for passengers that were continuing on to Vancouver.

My opinion is based not only reports here of Covid cases onboard, it has to do with the first cruise into Canada since they opened up from the beginning of the pandemic. Gut feel is if they are a lot of cases onboard they would not let them come to port to let off passengers (both healthy and sick). That in itself would really screw up the dry dock schedule wouldn’t it?

I would not be happy if I paid for a cruise only to find dumpsters and contractors tearing the ship apart around me!

No, they only do this if there are no passengers.

There have been threads in the past on this forum where Princess passengers on a cruise before dry dock reported areas of the ship closed off to passengers while contractors were already tearing those areas apart. (Not sure about the dumpsters though.)

I am so sorry you had to drive all that way for nothing. My husband was sent an email about the cancellation. I would have thought they’d send the email to all passengers since it doesn’t cost anything. I have a different email on file but never got an email so my husband forwarded his to me. Someone on our roll call said her email went to the junk folder so that’s why she missed it. We drove to San Francisco because by the time we got the cancellation notice, it was too late to cancel our hotel without having to pay for the night so we enjoyed a day in SF and drove home this morning. I hope you got a little time to enjoy SF. It’s such a beautiful city. I’d see if you can claim at least your gas money with Princess and any other expenses (e.g. meals) from your trip.

I want to correct this post but I can’t figure how to edit it on my iPad. I did get an email from Princess several hours after my husband got his. We had already left for San Francisco so I didn’t pick it up until we got back. So kudos to Princess for alerting both of us on separate emails.

According to this article, Princess offered a lot more $ to a lot more passengers than has been discussed here:

"The company said it had offered the ship’s 1,600 passengers a full refund and a 100 per cent future cruise credit of equal value, as well as helping them book hotels or flights".

"I have read many reports of work starting before actual dry dock."  Correct.  It happened to us.  They started several days into the cruise before dry dock.

I was on this 19 day cruise and I am glad they stopped it early. We had over 200 positive cases by day 12 and on day 14 they cancelled mandatory testing since the voyage was ending on day 15 anyway. All you could hear at shows and meals was people coughing and sneezing, including me. Just tested myself off the ship and test was positive. Feels like a head cold. Never heard anyone onboard being real sick either. Two different Princess ships with the same Western Panama Canal ports and both ships picked up alot of covid right after day 10. Do the math... must be coming aboard in port. Locals do not wear masks as their own laws state. Was the same in Columbia, Panama and Costa Rica. Wish their was a way to report how many of us test positive upon returning home.  Would be interesting.

Princess handling of passengers because of this cancellation is Absolutely Horrible. Princess was suppose to book us back to Canada, but they messed up and booked a flight to Miami. Now all they have to say is WHOOPS, Sorry, nothing we can do, your on your own, as it’s Sunday, and staff at head office is DRASTICALLY Reduced. Book it yourself they said, and send us the bills. We all know how that’s going to turn out, lucky if you get reimbursed this year with all the excuses Princess will have once they see  your claims. They’ll try everything in their power to deny the claims. Or limit your claims to half. Seen it before. That’s all I need is sending Princess 50 emails and 50 phone calls enquiring when will I be reimbursed after their Mess of cancelling the cruise.
Again, what a HORRIBLE WAY to treat customers. Unbelievable.

UPDATE..... Received a phone call from the sales department of Princess Cruises apologizing for this mishap. They booked us immediately on a flight back to Vancouver. Alls good. They were extremely accommodating. Very Much Appreciated. Thank You to the individual who talked to us from the sales department, and straighten this situation out. Well done.

Heard from a close friend who found out his cruise was cancelled when he landed in San Francisco.  Princess put him up in a hotel for free and offered him a free cruise to Hawaii leaving out of San Francisco or Los Angeles.  He could not accept the offer and they are flying him home today at no cost.

Yes, the full refund refers to the 4 day cruise, which we received, not the panama portion.

We were also on this cruise and it appears that someone brought this on board after a port call. We do not have Covid. We noticed that for the first few days the passengers were wearing masks most of the time while in indoor areas. This definately started to change as the cruise went on and fewer people were wearing their masks in the theater etc. The ship at the start only "suggested" wearing masks and then when they informed us that some crew and passengers were Covid positive they mandated mask wearing in ALL areas. We NEVER stopped wearing our masks when leaving our stateroom from day 1 to day 15. I am curious how the poster above knew that there were 200 cases. This info is impossible to get...where did you get this info Hungrygreek?

I was also on-board, I to don't know where these numbers are coming from, our room was a lido deck balcony and we could look down to the so called cov id deck,we would see the odd person or couple now and then. We were also told by crew that there was aprox.100 crewmembers down with covid, that was after the second formal night theater show was canceled due to illness...and they stated that!

On another note, the ship was running high above the waterline, we took on fuel in panama and it took a long time, I could see officers keep looking though bincolours  and pacing back and forth.. then when we reached  Cabo I noticed we were sitting high again! That night I went to the palm dining room and the noise and vibration  from the prop was crazy loud!

Then 2 days later we got our notices under our door that the rest of the cruise was nixed and they will make our flight changes...mine was fine but my friend was scheduled to fly out of San Jose only to find out that when she checked in ,her flight was canceled by princess! She had to self pay or miss her flight, hopefully Princess will make it good.

Day 1 of the would be cruise. I spent today folding laundry and cleaning the bathroom. I also watched a soap opera I've been watching on and off since the 80's and lounged around a lot. I thought about notifying work that I'm available for questions since the cruise got cancelled but didn't. Hum - what would you prefer? Being on a cruise or doing the above. 🙂 Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable experience on your next cruise. For me, I'll have to wait until November and hopefully we won't be having health safety debates by then.

SO they arrived in US a few days early tested and vaxxed   I'm sure onbaord they will follow crew rules for testing

Again- different risk then cruise population.

Does most of the crew leave and new crew arrives after drydock, or do they utilize existing crew?

We were on this cruise and we were told by a couple of different crew members that they were staying on the ship to serve the contractors.   They would also have things to do while in drydock.   I do suspect a large number of crew go home or transfer to other ships...entertainment, spa, casino, etc.

Just to add more to the rumors and innuendo:

I read that the ship was supposed to Dry Dock in Victoria.

I read that there were labor issues at the facility in Victoria.

I read that the ship had some propulsion problems in the middle of the cruise, hence the hurried change of dry dock from Victoria to Portland.

I read that there were 200 cases of Covid onboard. These numbers are not released to the public. This is information that is solely shared with the CDC and maybe other regulatory agents.

There are currently 40 cruise ships in US waters that are in the same Orange CDC category that the Caribbean Princess is - none are in the red category. Orange means 0.3% or more of passengers and crew which means that the CDC has started an investigation and the ship remains under observation together with the other 39 in the same Orange category.

The media, for some reason seem to pick on cruise ships and their Covid stories.  I sympathize with anyone on a cruise ship right now diagnosed with Covid and placed in quarantine, but Covid is also everywhere and can be picked up on airplanes, airports, railways, restaurants & pubs, night clubs, schools, hospitals, Costco, Walmart etc etc and any other place where people gather.

I can definitely let you know that the ship was always meant to drydock in Portland. Here is the drydock schedule I posted a long, long time ago!

People don't spend 14 days on "...airplanes, airports, railways, restaurants & pubs, night clubs, schools, hospitals, Costco, Walmart etc..."  Also, why won't Princess release the number of passengers and crew with Covid?  Why is she just arriving to dry dock April 6?  Doesn't pass the sniff test.
