Violent Passenger on Ruby

This was an awful incident, but, let's face it, similar incidents happen all the time on all other cruise lines,  plus hotels as well.

As has been said - don't confront the individual. Report the incident, and let security deal with it.

If you believe that the cruise line security did not take your concerns seriously, and as they indicated that this would be a crime in the uk, perhaps a report to the Department of Transportation will get more attention  (Be sure to CC a Princess corporate office and your travel agent if you used one. )

Since you chose to stay in the cabin next to the man who tried forcing his way into your cabin, while your husband was in the shower, the crew probably considered that there was not much more needed then to speak to him and write up the incident.

 

also wasn’t there crew in the hallway?

are there security cameras in the hallway?

That guy should be banned from this cruiseline.

My very first cruise was a Princess B2B in the Mediterranean. On the first leg our neighbours were a young couple with a baby who were lovely and we didn't hear a peep from them. On the second leg (ten days) we had a two family group travelling with the mothers and a number of children with three cabins in a row. Each day and evening the two mothers would go to the casino and leave the children in the cabin next to ours. The children would yell, scream, fight, crash against the wall, have fights in the hall, slam doors and once we saw the son pouring something over the balcony onto people on the promenade deck. We made many complaints and the mothers were spoken to but nothing changed. One night at about midnight the noise was so bad we called guest services to complain. A manager came and could hear the noise for himself and we told him that if nothing was done we would be leaving the cruise at the next port (the ship was full and we couldn't be moved). From then on a security guard sat in the hall to keep the children under control and a guard was there at all times for the last six days of the cruise. Every time there was any noise that he could hear in the hall he would knock on the cabin door and quiten them down. It made a huge difference and we were able to enjoy the rest of the cruise.

We were at the back of the ship with no cabins across from us so there weren't many people in that part of the ship.  We rarely saw crew in the hallway.  I don't know about the cameras. 

 

Plus, even if I had moved to another cabin he would still be able to find me since Princess has everyone's names outside of their cabins for everyone to see.

Oh, I thought the extended angle balconies were mid ship. Can you give us a cabin number? I love those balconies.

It was E730.  The last cabin on the side with the little bowed out extension on the side of the balcony.

Wow. That is crazy.  I can't believe people have so little respect for other passengers.

I'm sorry this happened to you and sorry Princess didn't do more.  In my opinion the father admitted what he did so it is hardly he said/she said.  I'm sure my immediate reaction to a sudden burst of noise on the other side of my balcony would have been exactly what yours was.  I do agree that with the internet teaching everyone that you can act like a spoiled 2 year old all the time and spew anger in every direction with no consequences, a group of folk who may already have anger issues seem to feel entitled to be angry all the time and vent the anger.  I don't know if people are more hair triggered since trolls on the net have started up or if we just hear about it more now.  Glad you are o.k.

Absolutely unacceptable actions (inactions) by every crew member involved. That family should have been summarily disembarked at the next port. First, the kids should not be jumping off of balcony furniture on a ship at sea - dangerous! Second, what the father did to you legally constitutes an assault with attempted battery. Shame on Princess for just dismissing the whole thing (and taking a man's word vs a woman's -- surprise) !!!! Please post your story widely on every Princess Facebook page!!!

Both time people scattered and were in a state of shock and security came and took each party away each time.  In about an hour both times they were back in the Piazza like nothing happened.  Never really learned what the provocations were about but it involved couples.

 

I think on many cruise there is really a pretty high tolerance by management and security for what constitute atrocious or criminal behavior.  Maybe others have seen it differently?

This was literally assault and attempted battery.

Telling the kids to knock it off would have been my reaction….it is an in the moment thing.  From what I understand is the guy admitted he tried to force his way into your cabin and put a big dent in the door trying.  He, not you, was totally in the wrong. He should have been taken off at the next port regardless of the passenger contract. He was dangerous not you!  You should make no apology !

Normal noise is one thing but I would also have addressed something like you described. I had a neighbor (a few balconies down the hall) who was clearly very drunk and screaming from his balcony at other boats as we left San Francisco including yelling super harassing things to the Coast Guard escort. Who harasses the Coast Guard?!? It was over the line IMO so I called passenger services AND sent a message in the crew chat feature of the app. I called because I wanted them to hear that the guy could be heard from INSIDE my cabin from two or three balconies down. They sent someone to talk to me and then they talked to him. I didn't hear a peep the rest of the cruise. I would have been terrified to address it in person. For sure always go through passenger services. That way they don't know who made the complaint and can't retaliate.

I'm so sorry that happened to you and I have to say I am extremely disappointed by the response you received. If I were you I would follow up with Princess again. Don't let this slide. Saying that the Passage Contract is something that everyone violates?!? Just no. That's not okay. What the heck is the point of the contract if it isn't going to be enforced? Especially when someone was violent with another passenger. Even it was your word against his.

It is very sad that some people are so disrespectful. I'm very sorry that this has happened to you and disappointed with the response you received. I would follow up with Princess after your cruise. I hope you get to have a wonderful and non stressful cruise in the future.

Thank you.  The head of Guest Services made me feel like I was a huge annoyance and they definitely did not want to discuss this with me at the Guest Services counter where other passengers could hear me.

I'd like to know how he thinks every passenger violates the passenger contract.

From experience, many of the Princess ship's chief security officers are ex Police officers or Naval Officers from the UK.  The more junior security officers are often from India or Nepal (ex Gurkha soldiers.)

She is the top person at HAL Group of which Princess is part of.  John Padgett reports to her.

Sorry about your experience.  Thanks for sharing, this will serve as a reminder to report problems to customer service.  Safer to avoid situations like you encountered.

I was on the Grand to Hawaii several years ago and there was a big fight between a husband and wife in our hallway. He locked her out of their stateroom and she woke me up by screaming in the hallway at midnight. I opened the door to see what was going on and talked to her briefly and then called the front desk who sent security. I watched through the peephole for awhile and they took the guy away eventually. Since we had so many sea days in a row, they just kept them separated and then they were disembarked in our first Hawaii port.

 

It was a very sad situation.

I've heard arguments between spouses in the next cabin but never anything as bad as that.

A few years ago on an Alaska cruise, a husband killed his wife after an argument on Emerial Princess. He was convicted of second degree murder and got 30 years behind bars. Domestic violence indeed  happens on high sea.
