A lot of people do it for a variety of reasons- lots of meds can''t be mixed with alcohol, some don't like alcohol, some feel healthier not drinking and the list goes on. dutchy6384 Posted May 24, 2022 #36 Share Posted May 24, 2022 We are D+ and would like to be loyal to Royal, but they are shooting themselves in the foot with these prices. Also the insult of sending Enchantment downunder cuts out a lot of itineraries for us. We have booked a few with Princess Cruises and added their new Princess Plus package for $40 per day / per person, which includes Premium Drinks package, Wi-Fi and gratuities. Royal need to lift their game and stop trying to take advantage of us poor locked down Aussies.

And you all should thank all the other drinkers for subsidize your daily drinking vouchers. If someone wants to buy a drink package then that's on them. It's their option. It's not a subsidy if it's not required, but the reality is, we all spent a lot of money along the way to get to D and above. Drinkers do have a choice, so no thank you's are required. My viewpoint is people who buy the drink package for the most part are being very gullible. It's a marketing ploy that works on some, just enough to make it worthwhile to RCI to offer it. I order what I want on a cruise and we have never ever come close to the cost of a package. And, now, as D+, 5 drinks is more than enough. We also get 6 "free" bottles of water in our cabin when we board. But, be aware we spent a lot of money to get to this point. cruisegirl1 Posted May 24, 2022 #41 Share Posted May 24, 2022 I believe RCCL is increasing specialty dining prices to persuade passengers to purchase the dining packages. Last month we used a BOGO on Harmony for Chops. We paid the first afternoon and went later in the week. The charge was OVER $80 for just the second person. Actually, we both used the BOGO and took 2 family members for a $170 charge! Of course 18% gratuity was added, ( no issue) but because we bought the dinners while still docked in Florida, we paid some extra taxes. $170 to use both BOG0's . Not sure we'll do that again, especially as we found the dining room food to be quite good. M

We buy the package because we usually come out better than if we didn't. How do I know? We have sailed without the package of course. I like my specialty coffe in the morning and my husband likes his fresh squeezed juice. After a few drinks by the pool, Hendricks gin or Patron Silver, we have nearly met the daily cost and I will have a prosecco or glass of wine at dinner too. Of course the bottled water between alcoholic bevs and a Coke Zero or two...not being gullible at all.

My post was not trying to be smart nor serious, but intended as a cold joke. Plus if you want to be serious, then please remember all your 'free stuff' needs to be paid somehow, not from your past sailings (as the revenue and cost is distributed in that sailing only) but from the current one. Your next sailing's free stuff needs to find profits from that sailing only to cover the marginal cost however small it is for RCL. So there. So, there? LOL. That sounds like an adult haha. Just as your free stuff in the future is paid for by others. Whether it was a joke or not, I was just making a rebuttal point to your post. Talk about taking this too seriously. And, being condescending isn't attractive on anyone. So, how does a "cold joke" differ from other types of jokes? Is that even a term? I have in fact taken a marketing class and I am aware of what you are saying but calling people “gullible” for purchasing something that is a benefit is a bit rude. You can’t say something rude and refer to it as your viewpoint expecting it to be accepted without ire. I’m certain the packages benefit the business or they wouldn’t have them. But they make money on individual drinks also and we have seen that we benefit from a package.
Rare TexasRon Posted May 24, 2022 #49 Share Posted May 24, 2022 Both the package and buying individual drinks bring in tons of profit for Royal Caribbean. Pick your poison…the drink costs them maybe a buck or two at most is profitable no matter how you get it. You pay for free drinks, too. Status by being rewarded for loyalty and in the casino by playing games that all have an advantage for the house. They are raising the prices and will until they see pushback. No pushback, they will stay high. Who is going to pushback?

Your being offended doesn't change the fact it's a marketing ploy and that Royal makes a lot of money off it or they wouldn't offer it. I have taken a couple of marketing courses as a business major and I remember vividly what marketing actually is and Royal is doing it well. Most who are complaining about the cost are still buying it so I'd say Royal has figured out that it's not really about the price. It's about the psychology.
