Don't buy Apple products onboard!

This is my PSA for those of you with lots of non refundable OBC thinking you can get an Apple something ... probably you shouldn't, especially if it's old stock. (If you do, be sure to open it up and check it out before you disembark so you can return it if it's a dud!)

I am just off Summit, had a lot of OBC thanks to Best Offer Guarantee, so bought a (2019) 16 inch MacBook Pro for $2199 (saved $200 with their "sale.") Reading up here on CC, I saw if available, Apple stock was mostly older products being sold, and also saw riredsox's Feb post of the drained battery on a MacBook Pro purchased on Constellation. Sure enough, the one I got refused to turn on and refused to charge. After some online research, I figured the battery can be replaced for $200 which is less than what tax would have been if I bought it at an Apple Store at home.

I took it into an Apple Store today and turns out it's not a simple battery replacement; after some manipulation in the store trying to reset it, it was determined it was utterly dead. Seems the drained battery was out so long that internal damage occurred, and it now needs to be repaired ... for $678. The person helping me thought I was a huge dummy to spend that much money on an older MacBook Pro when the newer/2022 MacBook Pro with a better chip was only $300 more than what I paid; my dummy status changed only a little when I told her Apple Store doesn't take OBC.

Also, I learned that the one year warranty for Apple products bought onboard works this way:  the clock starts when Celebrity buys it from Apple. This MacBook Pro was purchased from Apple Jan 2020, so its warranty expired Jan 2021, regardless of that fact that Celebrity is an "authorized reseller." So my Celebrity receipt stating "Manufacture warranty valid one year from date of purchase" is erroneous, since this applies only to Celebrity's date of purchase, not my date, and the link for more info on that receipt gives specific details only for products purchased from an Apple Store, not an authorized reseller.

Hope this helps those of you with NR OBC trying to decide between specialty dining, excursions, spa or MacBook Pro ...

If the receipt from X says 1 yr from purchase, if I were in your position I'd email a copy of their receipt along with the repair bill from Apple and insist they cover it. I like a good fight and nearly $700 is well worth the time & effort to fight it.

Apple says 1 year from date of purchase if bought from Apple or an authorized reseller.  I do agree Celebrity has mostly older products especially now and sales tax is usually the only saving for US residents.  One year from manufacture applies if purchased in the Grey Market - not an Apple dealer.

The OP needs to discuss with Apple and provide a copy of their receipt.

Not sure where you brought it in for repair but any Apple store and authorized repair center will honor warranty based on official sale date to the customer.

Celebrity is an official authorized reseller and they record the sale date as starting date for the warranty no matter what kind of model it is.

My question is, what has X said to this?

Have you brought up the PSA to them for a potential resolution, as well???

Good luck and bon voyage

^^^ This should be your first step in the process.

I agree, I think you could get it covered.

Sorry that happened to you, but our experience was the opposite. In December 2021, we  had a ton of nonrefundable OBC to use. So we decided to buy some Apple products, knowing that we were buying older versions. Among other items, we bought the expensive noise cancelling AirPods. One of them stopped working 3 weeks ago and I took it into the Apple store. They were able to look them up and said that even though they were the 2019 versions, they are under warranty because of when we bought them. They replaced them at no charge.

I would not accept this as fact from your Apple repair shop's employee. Ask for a manager.

On our last several cruises on Silhouette, edge and Equinox I was advised by the X rep in the Apple store not to their apple products. We had lots of OBC. So I cashed it out on Roulette in the casino on each cruise. I also asked on last cruise when will they buy more Apple products and he was hoping later this year.

One note, when you are in a cash crunch like the RCL company is I am sure many companies are Leary to let them buy on credit or RCL is hesitant to buy on loan, they must rate their debt as to best use of money.

So sorry this happened to you!  My husband called them every day till they paid me to return my “new” iPad to them in Miami.  I then got all the money back that wasn’t OBC and a future OBC that was used.   Keep at it till it is resolved.   I wasn’t aware the product was 2 yrs old when I purchased it.   I would never have bought it in the first place.   Please hound them till you get all your money and OBC back!

As others have said, this isn't right.

Did you check the Apple warranty status on apple.com ?

Two points...

1.  Celebrity is an authorized Apple Retailer.  As such, Apple warranty (which starts the day of purchase of an Apple product) is valid

2.  ANY Apple Store should be able to fix your issue.  If not, contact Apple directly.  They'll help you.

I also had a ton of OBC last year.  If I were looking to buy any Apple product at my nearby Apple Store, I would expect the latest and greatest.  But, using OBC on board because you prefer doing that vs spending it in one of the jewelry stores on potentially losing it in the casino, I understand the decision.  I ended up buying an Apple Watch 5 with my OBC.  Couple of generations old, but still a good product.

Apple Support has an app that I suggest you download.  You can also try calling their support line at 800-275-2273

Did you pay the balance with a credit card? I would speak to them and do a charge back claim. My AMEC card also includes a purchase guarantee, they will replace within three months for a new one.

There is absolutely NO reason to do a charge back when there is a valid warranty in place, IMO.

Personally, I have never known a warranty start upon purchase of a product by an 'authorized' reseller or retailer.

The warranty is always in force to the direct end purchaser, upon registration of the product and submitting proof of purchase.

As such, the initial info given to the OP is obviously incorrect.

bon voyage

I think you need to talk to another Apple employee or manager. Also you could check your warranty coverage here: https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

I can't see that the warranty expired 1 year after Celebrity got it unless Celebrity is completely not a reseller just privately selling them.   If the later is really the case, no one should ever buy Apple product onboard as they are almost guarantee to be 1+ years old and without any warranty.

We were on the Apex last month with a large amount of OBC.  There was a 2018 MacBook Pro for $2199 that we were going to buy with our OBC but someone else purchased it before we could get to it.  We decided to buy jewelry instead.  After reading your post, I am glad we did not buy the MacBook Pro.  i would have been extremely upset if we had purchased the computer and encountered problems once we got home.  Thanks for this information on Celebrity's Apple products.

I wouldn't consider this a definitive statement on the Apple warranty as it makes no sense in terms of the experience others report, and the normal reality of buying from an authorized reseller.

There is no way I'd buy a 2018 computer model no matter who the manufacturer is. Chip and everything is already stone age at this point. You should have better just cashed out at the casino!

I'm a technogeek, and I would be very hesitant about purchasing any electronics or watches (beyond a el-cheap-o watch so that you don't become a featured YouTube Pier Runner).... period. You can get better deals and selection from home.

... better than getting it with 'free' OBC...?

That's usually the motivation, everyone knows it isn't the latest tech, or at least they should, but it is effectively free...

It is difficult to believe the OP purchased a computer and then did not turn it on and have it set up in the computer store onboard.   I have never purchased electronics anywhere where I have not check to see the item was usable.

Let's change your intro to: "It is too bad that...."

Finding it "difficult to believe" implies that you think it is untrue. I cannot imagine any reason someone would make it up!
