Love all the photos..the SV was a perfect choice for 3..large outdoor balc, larger cabin area. .  The inf Veranda would be much  tighter all around. ,(We have stayed in both styles)

You can ask steward to remove alot of the Hoppen stuff( unless u love it)..more room on the shelves! Also can put some of the many pillows away too. Love displaying a small flower arrangement  on the  lighted " niche" shelf.

The art you have photographed has us psyched for BEYOND..We enjoyed the Art excursion on EDGE.. included lots of goodies , and had a short tour of the plantings..very well done. Keep it coming   please.!

The art piece over the couch is lovely.. do you have any info about it?

Hey HCat

There is a book in all the cabins which lists all the art (and the artist) on the ship, but that's it, no further info. We asked at Guest Relations about an art tour, but there is none apparently, which is a shame as there is some really interesting pieces onboard I would have like to learn more about.

Loving your review and your writing style. The photos are good, too.

Just booked a cruise on the Beyond for next summer. Based on the prices, Celebrity is very proud of this new ship. I hope it delivers. II am forwarding this link to the friends who are going with us.

Can't wait to read about the rest of your cruise.

Hi Tudy

There is lots more to come, so hopefully some of it will be useful to you and your friends. I had a great time and loved the ship, but it was my first real holiday in 2.5yrs so I would have been happy with a dinghy to be honest! It was expensive but less expensive than we intially paid as I saw a price drop and too advantage of that.

Day 1 Part C Afternoon on the ship

Right, now lunch. Oceanview Café it was. I am not a big (or small) fan of buffets, but there was nowhere else to go at that stage.  Oceanview on Beyond is very well spaced out, there are lots of different stations, the décor is lovely (including Silestone quartz on some of the tables, it’s the exact same one I am considering using for my new house, great minds and all that!).

Liking the décor in here – Art Deco(ish)

 IMG_1125.thumb.JPG.dd301d667803a48712b9283380d86d76.JPG

Obviously, you cannot pick up the food yourself anymore, this helps with restraint (good) but takes ages (bad). Normally, salads are my to go to for lunch (as you shall see), but today they had Indian butter chicken, so in honour of DH (husband) who is not with us (on the cruise that is, not in general), I had some butter chicken with rice and a roti, and a glass of white wine (sauvignon blanc I think). It was pretty good, could have been hotter in terms of both heat and spice. DM had a very very small portion of fish and chips (not good at all she reports) and DS had…had….I have no idea, I was concentrating on my butter chicken. I wouldn’t normally have dessert at lunch time, but I’m on a ship, on vacation, on a ship, so I had some lovely chocolate cake, top marks. DS and DM were less impressed with their cake choices (this will be a theme). The coffee was passable, but my expectations were already low. I live 100 meters from the worlds’ best coffee shop (in a shipping container no less), so I’m spoilt for great coffee. Sidenote: at some point we watched the safety video and went to our muster station.

Sunbed time! Obviously not actually in the sun for me (have you seen my Irish complexion!), but you get the gist. Deck 15 has some lovely quiet (and shaded) areas near the glass plunge pool (oh have I mentioned the see-through plunge pools yet….its basically a plunge pool, that’s well yeah, see-through, but you can see the sea…so it’s like an infinity pool on a ship…kind of). We had a dip, very cool and very refreshing! Then relaxed, listening to music, enjoyed the first afternoon onboard. DS may or may not have had a spicy margarita cocktail, I stuck to water.

Infinity plunge pool was nice and cool

 IMG_0953.thumb.JPG.c2d3030cd82fef613144457a16115da3.JPG

For sailaway we headed up to the Sunset Bar which was hopping, it was the only place yet to be ‘hopping’. There was a DJ and a sax player, the atmosphere was lovely, nothing crazy, just happy people happy to be on the water again, leaving the beautiful port of Barcelona behind.

We were slightly windswept but having fun

 IMG_6592.thumb.JPG.9cf1b1fd58de94e16db714de2d84c8d3.JPG

I love container ships….and will spend much of this trip looking at them as you will see…..I’m trying to figure out how to make this my next research project, although I don’t exactly work on international trade, I’m not that kind of economist.

What are in them, where are they going, where did the come from???

 IMG_1023.thumb.JPG.f7acf2cb6f5eb6bc5f8a4e87eb9bb9a4.JPG

We sat, we swayed, we may have even danced, and we managed to get an aperol spritz (only $1 extra with classic package). We had some slight difficulties walking ‘straight’ back to the cabin…either the ship was moving (it was) or the aperol was a little strong (??). I’m not saying.

Refreshing

Day 1 Part D The Evening (don’t worry, not all days will come in 3 segments!)

We had booked Eden for 8pm, and it was about 6.30 at this point, so time for a lie down, shower, change of clothes, and out the cabin door again. But first our daily pre-dinner photoshoot - this time on the balcony.

Hey, why I am bigger than everyone else!

 IMG-1876.thumb.JPG.ecc15b607838d45aadf98a96740ec828.JPG

Eden (deck 5) was amazing from start to finish, we had definitely started on a high food wise – great food, great service, great view, what more could you want? Service was well paced and friendly, and the sommelier went out of his way to find us a wine that was included in the classic package. Plus the wine kept flowing. I remember waiting up to 30mins for a drink on previous ships, but not anymore, not on Beyond, some advantages to the reduced capacity I guess. Speaking of capacity, I have no idea how many people are onboard, I heard rumours of ~1600 but I cannot verify.

Complete with swinging chairs

We started with an amuse bouche of watermelon, then I had jumbo crab cakes, followed by lobster casserole, lemon tart, and petit fours and decaf coffee. 10 out of 10! Fine food, fine wine, fine company, fine sunset, what a perfect way to end our first day…

Love the décor in Eden. DS matched!

After dinner, DS and DM went to the theatre, I think, all I know is that I ended up sitting on deck outside Eden, watching the sunset and finishing my wine…what an amazing end to our first day.

What a view

On the way back to our cabin we went through the grand plaza and saw some signing/dancing but didn’t stay long….bed calls.

I'll take note to avoid fish and chips. Honestly it's hard I'm from the UK/Ireland and I find a lot of times in Ontario (especially Toronto area) people will recommend places for fish and chips as being really good and I hate it. But then I grew up in London with fresh seafood from the coast each morning and every time I go home to visit family in Scotland I get fresh fish and chips so nothing here stands up to it.

Thanks for sharing the pictures of Eden for Dinner.   I was ho hum on their previous menu and enjoyed your picture and review so much I booked it for first night for our April 2023 Cruise.

I have to say,  Your all dress beautifully and look fantastic.

I just noticed you are from Dublin.   We lived across from Herbert Park in Ballsbidge for 3 years.   Love Dublin and will be back to visit next year.

In April while on the Edge, DH & I took an "excursion" titled EDGE Exposed: Art, Architecture & Design Tour. We registered in advance in the Excursions section of our Cruise Planner. It was a narrated walk around the common areas of the ship with the guide pointing out and sharing information about the art, the architecture and the design of the ship.  We started and ended at the Excursions Desk area. We understood that the participants were supposed to be given a copy of the book about the ship art, but unfortunately, that didn't happen. We still thought it was worthwhile as we are architecture/design geeks.

Precusor & Introducation

It is Day 2 and I haven’t typed a word yet….remiss of me, but if I don’t start now, I never will. Where to start? Like many others, this is our first cruise since Covid-19; our last (Sapphire Princess) ended in Singapore in January 2020, just one day after the Diamond Princess left port…it was a lucky escape! Two and a half years later, all vaccinated, fully boosted, immunity from a recent C19 dose and we are ready to get back to sea…fingers crossed…..

Who are ‘we’  - DS (sister), DM (mother), and me. It’s our 7th cruise – so we are still relatively new to the game. We started in 2015 on Celebrity Reflection, and in no particular order (because I really can’t remember) – there was HAL Oosterdam, Celebrity Equinox, HAL Nieuw Statendam, Cunard Queen Mary II, and Sapphire Princess covering Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, but mostly Europe.

The 3 of ‘us’ on our last previous cruise from Singapore

 IMG-1667.thumb.jpg.033e54c374a20153ad78780e849a22c1.jpg

Why Celebrity Beyond? Why not? A beautiful new ship, Captain Kate at its helm (whom I only discovered on Instagram during lockdown), and our first time on an Edge class ship after our cruise on Celebrity Apex was cancelled in June 2020.  I have been eagerly following its build online and now I get to see her in person…the ship that is, not Captain Kate, but also Captain Kate.

Beyond taken from a tender

IMG_1337.thumb.JPG.90f7d129fa738c3aabd30725e0b0ad34.JPG

I have written this review/diary while on the cruise, but I am posting it when I return due to a) rubbish basic wi-fi package, and b) writing in a hot solarium after a day in port is not conducive to correct spelling, grammar, or sense, so editing is required. I will hopefully post it all over the next week or so….but don’t quote me on that.

Where did we go?

-        Barcelona

-        Marseille

-        Villefrance/Nice

-        Santa Margareta/Portofino

-        La Spezia (Pisa/Florence)

-        Civitavecchia/Rome

-        Ajaccio, Corsica (well maybe not)

-        Naples

-        Barcelona

A few sneak peek pics of destinations to come

IMG-6830.thumb.JPG.0f1e4724ebb01f3b360f7b4e105ad45a.JPG

How long did we go for?

-        9 nights

Where did we stay?

-        Sunset veranda (aft) on deck 12

Our cabin was top right

 IMG-7268.thumb.JPG.3bbfbb5ad2de3cec3d98fc0fd5023654.JPG

What class are we? (if that’s not a rude question)

-        We are not Elite or Zenith and we are not staying in a suite or Aqua class so we don’t have access to the Retreat, Luminae or Blu (please read review of a financially well-endowed person for that, i.e., not me); however we did purchase a 5-night speciality dining package beforehand, so you can read about Eden, Fine Cut, and Voyage.

What package did we have?

-        ‘Always Included’ – classic drinks package, free gratuities, free basic wi-fi. We considered upgrading to the premium drinks package but the drinks on the classic were fine and we just paid the difference when we wanted a ‘better’ glass of wine.

Where did we mainly hangout while at sea?

-        Solarium (for afternoon lounging)

-        Eden (for lunch and night time fun)

-        Café al Bacio (for the cakes, I’m not going to lie)

-        Cosmopolitan (for breakfast)

-        Speciality restaurants (well 3 of the 5 isn’t bad)

-        Stateroom (for obvious reasons)

What were the highlights?

-        Beautiful ship with that ‘new ship smell’

-        Sunset veranda for, you know, watching the sunset

-        Amazing food in the speciality restaurants, esp. Eden and Le Voyage

-        Again Eden – everything about it

-        Friendly and efficient service from all staff

-        The relative emptiness of the ship (while this cannot be sustainable for the cruise company, it’s a real bonus for anyone cruising now)

-        Meeting Captain Kate, although not Bug.

More of these type pics to come...balcony view

Beyond!

IMG-6532.thumb.JPG.fb9a5f62d6aa83ed8c0f75db3de51ac6.JPG

What were the lowlights?

-        Um…….this is hard….eating too much lobster and drinking too much prosecco perhaps??

-        The absence of a outside deck where it is possible to do a full 360 loop – although I haven’t seen any of these on Celebrity ships.

-        Having to go to 4 different stations to fill one plate of salad in Oceanview café. It’s a lot of work for your lunch!

-        A more serious one – zero info about number of guests onboard or any mention of the big C19. However, all staff were wearing masks at all times.

Great salad but took a lot of effort

 IMG_1338.thumb.JPG.45b058f58442168e3166a7cc16d8909c.JPG

If you don’t like detailed, minute-by-minute details of life on Beyond (ok not quite), this is not the post for you. I repeat move right along!

Cruise lines will not announce COVID cases.

Hi Shelley

I got this dress almost 20yrs ago in Urban Outfitters, so I doubt they still have it online. Its such a useful dress, the perfect LBD (even though its grey and 100% silk so needs to go to the drycleaners all the time, but a classic no less!)

You will have a fab time, the ports are wonderful! I hate packing, although I hate unpacking even more. I managed to fit in 3 clothes change per day for 10 days in 17.5kg, a miracle!

Hi Lena

I agree, so hard! The best place I have found for fish and chips is Dunmore East in Waterford...but its a long way to go for fish and chips! I see that Celebrity have one or two sailings stopping off there next year, so if you are desperate for good fish and chips, its an option!

Thank you for your lovely comment Jim! I know that most people are no longer into 'dressing for dinner' but if I don't wear these dresses on a cruise I never will. Any excuse to dress up!

I was actually very close to Herbert Park today on my way to a reunion lunch in Sandymount, such a lovely part of the city! I hope you enjoyed your time in Dublin.

I would have loved that! I wonder why it is not an option on Beyond? Maybe I just missed it, but guest relations didn't seem to know anything about it.

Day 2 Marseille, France (South of)

Morning in Marseille

On the plus side, I slept better than the night before, but I still didn’t have a great night’s sleep even though I had a real bed (DS is super, she took the sofabed!). Very comfortable beds by the way. I got up at about 6.45am and headed up to deck 15 (forward) to the gym. I had to walk the entire length of the ship to get there (but only 2 decks up), guess that’s my warm-up sorted so!

There were a few others in the gym but it was not busy at all. I did a short warm-up on the treadmill, followed by 45mins of strength training (upper body day) using the app “Give me Strength” by Alice Living which I took up during lockdown when the gyms closed. All I really needed was free weights, but they are in pounds (!!!) and I my weights are in kilograms, arghhh, its way too early to do math! The conversion meant I ever had to go heavier or lighter…. I went lighter, I am on holiday after all.

Loads of treadmills

Pretty quiet in here

I was back in the cabin by 8.00. DS and DM were already up and ready for breakfast (DS did about 4km in the walking track which goes between deck 14 and 15 (3 laps =1 km). As I am not a fan of buffets (I may have mentioned this before), I persuaded them to go to the Cosmopolitan dining room for breakfast. If you are not in a suite (and can go to Luminea) or in Aquaclass (and can go to Blu….I think?), it’s the only place you can have breakfast served to you. Yes, please. It closes at 9.30 so no long leisurely lie-in’s if that’s your thing. It was pretty empty – again I have no idea if this is due to the low numbers of board, or people prefer the buffet, or simple they are still in bed (or off the ship already)!

Cosmo (where we went to breakfast every few days)

Lovely room

We got a lovely table by the window, the coffee, juice (grapefruit, always grapefruit) and pastries (mini, but who’s counting) were flowing!

Keep the coffee coming!

DS looking pretty refreshed this morning

I had a fruit plate followed by a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. We agreed that we should simple share a fruit plate in future as there is too much for one person. I also suggested sharing the bagel but that was more a controversial suggestion apparently.

Overall, a nice breakfast, relaxed, friendly service, we will be back.

Some interesting art outside.

OK, back to the cabin to sun cream head to toe and pick up our stuff for a morning in Marseille.

We passed the grand plaza on the day, so here is a photo of it during the day time (there was always someone there cleaning all the glass!!!).

The South of France, and especially the area around Marseille, is where we go for most of our land-based holidays, so we didn’t feel any pressure to do any of the main excursions from this port e.g. Provence (we normally base ourselves in St Remy de Provence). Instead, we were just going to do a walking tour of Marseille city.

The ship docks in the commercial port in Marseille, which is a couple of km from the old port. Celebrity provides shuttle buses for $12 return (which we took), not realising that the port also provides a free shuttle bus to the city if you just walk a few meters to the port entrance, all well, next time!

The buses dropped us off quite a distance from the start of our planned 2hr guided walking tour. The bus leaves you at the cathedral. Near here:

As we were too earlier for our tour, we slowly wandered around the new museums which were not there the last time we visited the city. In general, Marseille looks very different from our last visit which was probably 10yrs ago. We do fly into Marseille airport regularly, but we head straight to St. Remy de Provence rather than staying in the city. Marseille was the European city of culture in 2013 and they invested €250m in improving the image of the city and reclaiming its old buildings, building new museums etc. It looks great now. It used to have a pretty dodgy image, but I always liked it regardless. Looks even better now.

The old fort

We decided to do one of the free (tip-based) walking tours. It started at 11.00 and ended about 1.30. It was ok, not great, there were too many people on it which made it hard to hear the guide. We started walking through the old port (which was largely decimated during WW2 save for a few buildings), then we headed into the Le Panier district which has been totally gentrified in the last few years. Next we had 10mins to explore the cathedral, before ending up at the fort (where there is a public toilet, finally!!!).

DS had booked lunch for a restaurant on the other side the city, but the tour ended so close to the shuttle buses, and it was hot, and DM was tired, and did I mention it was hot, so we decided to head back to the ship for lunch instead.

But first a photo in the fort

Near the bus stop

The only problem was that we arrived back after 2pm and lunch options are very limited at that stage – Eden café was closed (disaster), Spa café closed (disaster), so Oceanview buffet it would have to be (boo)….and we would have to be fast, it closes at 2.30! Rush for the food, quick……….but first time a table….by the window…..nice view

Lunch view

I got a salad with lots and lots of lettuce, I had to keep asking the server to give me abit more, a bit more, until eventually just said, fill the plate with lettuce until you cant fit anymore. Who needs 2 sorry leaves of lettuce?? Keep it coming please. I ended up going to 3 or 4 different stations to complete the salad, not an easy option, but tasty ok.

Salad, with some potato salad and chicken salad, and bread….always bread

Not wanting to make the same mistake again, we headed down to Café al Bacio to try the coffee and afternoon cakes in the hope they  would be better than the offerings in Oceanview, and indeed they were. The carrot cake gets the thumbs up, even the coffee was ok. DS and DM also loved the mini tarts – lemon & fruit methinks.

Cake!

@Lunastellaloving your review. Thank you. Over a year until we have the pleasure of the Edge class in New Zealand waters, so living vicariously will keep us going until then.

I see you are also a coffee connoisseur. I find it really disappointing that with all their wonderful venues it's so hard to get a decent coffee on Celebrity. A Barista at Al Baccio once told me it's because they cater to the majority and set the grind too course. It was quiet (is that ever a thing at AB) so she changed the grind for me and it was better. Unfortunately not something they can do every time. Guess we'll need to start a coffee revolution and change the taste of the majority🤣

Happy cruising, for next time.
