Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

I haven't had an ice cream soda in ages. I had a hotdog yesterday for lunch; a day too early. My post office has lollipops out; I'm headed there shortly. Good quote!

I like the meal. Pass on the drink and wine.

I haven't been to Valletta. Thanks for all the great photos.

Another hot day here, with perhaps some thunderstorms after midnight. The new garage door opener is installed. Now I need to pair the remote to the HomeLink button in my car, then pair the car to the opener (tricky, as you have 30 seconds from pushing a button on the opener to pushing one in the car). I'd hoped to do it this AM before the garage was over 90, but too late. It's my injection day, so I've taken Benadryl earlier and more this afternoon. Hopefully no hive/itching at the injection site tomorrow.

@StLouisCruisers I wear custom fitted compression stockings daily from the time I'm up until I go to bed, and in temperatures like this, no fun!  Sorry you still have pain. Congrats to the Tigers.

@0106 Thanks for the recipes and all the chili pepper info!

@Cruzin Terri Enjoy the drive on the Colonial Parkway today. Thanks for the Valletta pictures.

@cat shepard Yay on the all clear from the Dermatologist!

@smitty34877 Good to hear that your niece and her DH tested negative and are feeling better.

@kazu Love the dahlias. It reminds me of my mother; growing up we had lots of dahlias and I remember digging up the bulbs and storing them in the basement in paper bags over the winter.

@cunnorl Oh my on people getting struck by lightning. We had several cases last year, either on golf courses on in parks.

@lindaler I hope your DS gets the house.

@Horizon chaser 1957 @aliaschief Safe travels tomorrow.

@bennybear Prayers for DH's surgery tomorrow.

Prayers for the Care List and a shout out for the Celebration List.

Stay safe and cool everyone.

In 2016, Captain DD extended our day in Valletta to two days due to rough seas, which meant we would not be able to tender in Gozo the second day.

We rented a car the first day and drove to the ferry terminal and took the ferry to Gozo.  These pictures are of our drive back to the  port from the ferry.

We took the long way back to the port.  A couple of beaches and the scenery of the coast and interior.

An interesting church we passed.

It's time to get ready to go with DH to his PT session.  I finish the 2017 and 2019 pictures when we return in a couple of hours.

Good morning all!

An ice cream soda sounds good, but I prefer an ice cream sundae on the rare occasion I have ice cream. And that will be today, to celebrate my lower A1C the other day.  My favorite, Peanut Buster Parfait.  I was waiting for a warm day (to enjoy it to the fullest) LOL. It will reach almost 80 today, heading to mid-high 80's next week.  I know that isn't much compared to what a lot of you are going through!

Hot dogs also sound good, maybe we'll make a trip to the grocery store.  Not a fan of lollipops, other than Tootsie Rolls when I was a child.  The quote is a good one, will pass on the meal and drink.  The wine sounds very good.

We were in Valletta in October of 2019 on our long 65-day anniversary cruise(s) on the NS and the Koningsdam.  We took an all-day tour that day, starting with a 90-minute walking tour of Valletta, then visited St. John's Co-Cathedral, to the Tarxien Temples dating from 3150 B.C., a glass blowing factory (I rarely buy anything at the shops but fell in love with a few pieces there).  Then lunch, and on to Mdina where we had a huge thunderstorm and had to dodge the driving rain. Even still, it was a great day!

@smitty34877Terry great news that your niece and her DH have tested negative now.

@kazuJacqui thank you for posting photos of some of your gorgeous flowers.

@cat shepardAnn congratulations on the "all-clear" from the dermatologist.

@StLouisCruisersSandi thank you for your photos of Valletta, great photos.  Also a big cheer for the Tigers' win!

@durangoscotsSusan so glad that your eye is better.

@ottahand7your sunrise photo is frame-worthy!  So beautiful.

Here are some photos from our day in Valletta -- The weather wasn't the best (and terrible in Mdina) so I don't have many outdoor photos.

The rain was pouring off buildings and we spent a lot of time running from shop to shop just to stay somewhat dry.

If you didn't believe the posts warning against taking food into Australia, read this.

The world’s most expensive sandwich is a champagne-breaded, gold-flake-sprinkled grilled cheese from New York’s Serendipity 3 that sells for $214. But a woman ended up paying over eight times that amount for half of a Subway footlong that she forgot to declare when she landed in Australia after a layover in Singapore.

The mistake cost Jessica Lee 2,664 AUD, the equivalent of about $1,844.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/07/20/subway-sandwich-australia-tiktok/

She became a celebrity on TikTok and now works full-time in (on?) social media. Subway declined to pay the fine but sent her a voucher for $1,844 in sandwiches.

It sure is!  Our guide told us that it's the most (one of the most?) expensive Christian churches in the world.  I thought she said "the most", DH thought she said "one of the most".....

Good morning!  Thank you for the Fleet and Daily Rich. Thank you to everyone for sharing.

We were in Valletta on the Rotterdam May 2001. I accidentally broke my camera so I don’t have pictures but Craig took video. We went to St John’s Co Cathedral and walked around a lot. It was interesting seeing all the narrow pedestrian streets, most of which were sloping or stairs like the one in Sandi’s picture.  We also went to a hard to find church called St Paul’s Shipwreck. Paul the Apostle shipwrecked at Malta and is considered a spiritual father to the Maltese. It has a few relics of St Paul. A friend of ours asked us to seek it out and I brought him back some postcards. Then we had a lovely lunch in a restaurant that was like a wine cellar.  Thanks to everyone who posted pictures.

I have a lot to do in the next few days. Tomorrow is Craig’s big birthday, his 70th. So we are having family over on Sunday to celebrate that plus his retirement.

Have a great day everyone!

Happy birthday tomorrow Craig!🎂

the Chile verde looks fabulous! Thanks!
We enjoyed visiting Malta twice.   @Cruising-along we were there in Fall 2019 on the Koningsdam too!   A beautiful spot,  the first visit our daughter’s  friend toured us around on the vintage buses.
DH has his surgery tomorrow , praying all will be well.

Interesting they have custom compression stockings.  Yeah, my legs and feet are pretty hot, but who wants to take them off and then struggle putting them on again later?  LOL  Good luck pairing the new opener with your car all by yourself.  You just don't think about how difficult that would be until you have to do it.

Yes, the stockings are made by Jobst. Every 6 months I get measured for them. The stockings are made in Germany and shipped to me. Before I went on Medicare I used to get 3 pair a year, and the cost wasn't too bad. Medicare doesn't cover them, even though I see an edema specialist, and they're about $400 a pair! So I get 2 pair a year lately, and I wear old ones until the elastic gets ineffective (they supposedly have a 6 month lifespan, but I use them much longer).

Garage door opener/car pairing is done, although I was sweating profusely. The opener has Wi-Fi, so now to set up the app.

Has anyone here bought third party insurance (I use squaremouth or insuremytrip), to insure your cruise when a large percentage of the fare is paid by FCC?  I need to know what amount to insure and only 10% is cash or FCD.  The rest is FCC from cancelled cruises.  Some people recommend you email Steve at insuremytrip but to be honest squaremouth has a better price on insurance and I'd feel terrible not buying from his company after I go to him for advice!

After lunch I started some lettuce seeds  in peat pellets for a late crop, because they tend not to germinate in hot weather, and set the tray in the guest room -- the upper floor of my house has AC. There were more spaces in the tray than I had in mind for lettuce, so I also started some Swiss chard. I can direct-sow bush beans now, to be ready in September when I get back from Denmark and Norway, but it's 95° degrees so I'm not rushing to do it. Maybe tomorrow morning since there is a chance of rain in the afternoon.

I’m in the same boat as you but not as high a percentage of FCC as you to pay for the cruise 😉

Here’s my attitude - the FCC is money I have paid.  If something happens and I can’t go and the FCC is lost due to expiry - then I would be out that money.  If it can be insured I would do so.

It is part of the cost of the cruise - if you are doing cancellation / trip interruption it should be included.  If you are only concerned about medical, that’s a horse of a different colour.  JMO.

Thank you for that perspective on it.  It's taking my ancient brain a lot of time to ponder these FCC amounts, so I checked our cruise spreadsheet to help clarify.  It seems half the FCC was a long ago deposit, which HAL renamed an FCC when they cancelled the 2021 Grand Africa on us.  The other half is a matching FCC in the same amount as the original deposit.  So half was out of our pockets, and half was out of theirs.  Nowadays when they cancel on you, they don't give you any bonus money at all!  It's purely your cash deposit now called a Future Cruise Credit.  Gee thanks!

Good afternoon from a very hot central Texas.

One piece of good news today.  We are a little closer to the appointment with the neurosurgeon in Dallas.  The surgeon in Waco office called this morning to tell DH that they had sent the referral in yesterday, and the hospital in Dallas acknowledged receiving it.  A step in the right direction.

Our trip to the PT session took longer than expected.  Because of the NPH, DH can't tell that the PT is helping a lot.  He and the therapist talked about it today, and frankly the therapist is not sure if the PT is really helping.  They decided if DH got an appointment  in two weeks or so, they'd continue the PT until the appointment.  If it's not until September or later, they will discontinue PT.

@JazzyV  Glad you were able to pair the car and garage door opener.  In Quartzsite, most of the time everyone just hopes the post office gives out the mail, forget about lollipops.  Things may change since they have a new Post Master now.

@bennybear  Thanks for your pictures.  Sending positive thoughts for  your DH's surgery tomorrow.

@marshhawk  I'm sorry you're having such a bad reaction to the booster.  Hope this means it is really working.

In 2017, our second day in Valletta on Prinsendam, we drove to Mdina.  It is a fortified city in the northern part of Malta and was the capital from antiquity to the medieval period.  Mdina sits atop a tall hill with commanding  views.

After leaving Mdina, which the locals pronounced M-dina, we headed back to Valletta.  After turning the car in, we took the elevator to the Upper Barrakka Gardens.  Boy, is that elevator worth the cost.

We walked around Valletta, and came across this memorial.  Shortly before we were in Malta, Panamanian journalist  Daphne Caruana Galizia, who exposed political corruption in Malta was killed by a car bomb.  This is the spontaneous memorial to her.

Now, about the cannons.  This was CD Cess Tesslar's last visit to Valetta before his retirement the next January.  Captain DD and the Port Agent arranged a cannon salute to Cess as we sailed.  Cess was on the bridge wing with Captain DD when we sailed.

BTW, in one of my earlier pictures, the beach area with all the buildings is called Popeye Village.

In 2019 on Veendam, we took the Ho-Ho to see other areas of Malta.  There were two routes at the time, and we took the one that did not go to Mdina.  The tour took us to the area across from the cruise ship dock.  We then went into the countryside before following the coast along the bays on the north side of the island.  Unfortunately, I do not remember the names of many of the places we saw.

Pictures from our drive around the island.

There are many towers around the island that were used for defense in the past.  Steve Berry's book The Malta Exchange is set partly in Malta, and some of the towers and chapels around the island are featured.

We drove to the Blue Grotto which was one of the stops.

There are several bays on the northside of the island west of Valletta, where there are a lot of apartments.  It looked like the area was really growing with a lot of new buildings.

Once off the Ho-Ho, we took the elevator up to walk around Valletta.  The memorial to  Daphne Caruana Galizia was still there, but the area around it was back to plantings.

Just got back from Seattle (ferries running and on time-a miracle!) for my 6 week post hip replacement surgery check-up. Everything is where it's suppose to be and I can now drive and get back to normal. Still need to be careful picking up things off the floor and not do anything dumb but so far-so good. Still can't believe how easy it's been-I've been lucky. Now I need to do a grocery run for my niece who lives next door. She's the latest on the Covid list but feeling ok. I did warn her about the terrible taste she'll get when taking the Paxlovid-luckily she had a fresh pack of mints.

Glad to see that everything is going well after your hip replacement, and that it's been an easy recovery.  Sorry your niece has covid. Hole it's a mild case and she recovers completely.

I did eventually crawl out of bed at 5, and melted into the love seat, and watched a foreign film,  Toscana,  which apparently inspired DH to watch more foreign film,  an Indian film RRR.  Set in the 30's the music is all Bollywood.   I'm listening, but not watching, very violent, and I cant seem to pay much attention to anything.

I have heard that getting sick after the booster means it's working, but working at what?  DH never gets sick from them.   This was my first day calling out sick since I started with this job over a year ago.

When I was little and my mom would take me shopping with her at B. Altmans' I used to "get lost" in the store, but was always found again at the lollipop counter.  Licorice was my favorite!

I'm sorry to hear you have been sick after your second booster.

I hope you are feeling a lot better when you wake up.

Graham.

St. Paul's Cathedral, which was built between 1696 and 1705, is the oldest church in Malta.

From the Cathedral, we visited the museum in the same plaza.  It was interesting to visit.  From there we walked around the small walled town of Mdina.

I'm pleased to hear your husband now has a referral acknowledged.

I hope everything goes well and pray that your husband gets the proper treatment to make him better.

Fantastic photos.

Graham.
