What ship are you on? I'm on the Seashore right now and I would say 50%of the men are wearing shorts for dinner. I had dinner last night at Butcher's Cut, (Excellent meal) and 1/3 of the men there were wearing shorts.

We sailed Seashore this past June/July on a B2B. We made it to the port of Miami but our luggage did not. United said they would deliver luggage before ship left.

Concierge and YC director (Mr. Bala) were on the lookout for our luggage.  Needless to say, our luggage did not make it with all our clothes.

We were informed that we could show up for dinner in YC restaurant this evening. But were told that we would not be able to eat in restaurant if we did not have long pants and shoes. We were informed by our butler. The second night which our butler brought dinner from YC restaurant to eat in our rooms. The 3rd day we were able to buy dress slacks and shoes in Ochos Rios and able to eat in restaurant. Do you know how hard it is to find dress slacks in a Caribbean port city?

Unfortunately my exerience was that the no shorts policy was strictly enforced and even though it was no fault of mine, I was not given an exemption to policy. Wonder what has changed in the past couple months with the dress code polict? Different restaurant manager, YC director, Hotel Director??

Well, Kwokpot did not mention in the post you quoted that he is staying in YC. He did, however, specifically mention shorts being worn in Butcher's Cut.

It is possible for YC to hold the line on shorts, as you experienced, but things to be going differently elsewhere on the ship. Perhaps less has changed than first glance may suggest.

....Do I wear cut-off jean shorts no, nor other ragged shorts...it is the Caribbean and I like the comfort of shorts, just as my significant other likes her shorts, skirts, dress, etc on these Caribbean cruises...which are very relaxed and usually warm, humid, sunny in the day....

The difficulty for many is when some, few TBF, appear in the MDR with the same attire as they wore for breakfast and all day touring or onboard ship....as you say, warm, humid and sunny all day!! 😉

Did you ever get your luggage?

Just, literally just, returned home from two weeks on the YC/Seashore.

I will write my thoughts in the upcoming days, but for certain, shorts are permitted in the YC dining room, as are baseball caps, sandals, flip flops, wrinkled T-shirt’s with writing on them or not, at night. There seems to be no enforcement of the “suggested” dress code.

The concierge told me that MSC does not want to offend anyone, so elegant gowns and tux are welcomed as are shorts.

And our butler did tell us that no shorts were allowed on gala night, however, he was incorrect.

Since I posted #42 the "not welcomed" dress from our daily program on Gala night on the Meraviglia Mediterranean and TA, I thought I should follow up with what I actually observed. Note had it not been for these threads I would not be posting

But here goes

The entire evening in the areas mentioned I only saw one group of 3 adults in the "not welcomed attire"  It seemed intentional since the level of "scruffiness" was extreme.

When they presented themselves in the MDR, There was some hesitation. Then they were escorted to a secluded area of the dining room.

I assume the large letters on the woman's t-shirt- "BITE ME" indicated they were prepared to make a scene.

Is the policy the same in the Meraviglia YC dining room?

Yes, in Miami the following Saturday. Mr. Bala found me at 8am in the dining room having breakfast and confirmed luggage was with MSC and waiting to be brought onboard. At least we all had fresh clothes for the second week.

Well the no shorts was strictly enforced on my B2B sailings this past summer.

I'm wondering if that was tied to Robert Balla.  When we sailed our B2B on Seashore in Feb - Mar, Robert was on the first week.  The second week, he was on vacation, and Robbie stepped in as YC Director.  We did notice people wearing shorts that week.  We know one thing, though, and that is that inconsistency is a consistent practice at MSC.

Some on here remind me of the main character on the British comedy serial "Keeping up Appearances"...Mrs. Bucket.

How another's wardrobe choice can impact your meal, cruise experience, or life is beyond the pale.

If our table mates are in tux/gown or shorts/T's makes no matter...but if they are loud, demanding, judgmental, unkind to the staff, complaining, etc...you know who you are🧐🤣

Reminds of the complainers at the elevators...just hilarious/ridiculous that a few moments waiting on a lift is a world crisis...and their need to share this with all others in the area.

Enjoy your cruise(s)!

Cheers

Hi- you do not get to say...MSC gets to say.

MSC has never turned my DW, cruise friends, nor myself away from any venue, on any night in shorts.

Do I wear cut-off jean shorts no, nor other ragged shorts...it is the Caribbean and I like the comfort of shorts, just as my significant other likes her shorts, skirts, dress, etc on these Caribbean cruises...which are very relaxed and usually warm, humid, sunny in the day.

Interesting how many commenters/posters want to tell others how they should dress and what languages are acceptable...etc

I say tux or T shirt...it is your cruise to choose...

Sorry, not sorry that MSC is much more accepting than some of the narrow/historic mindsets presented on this forum!

We must do something, Harrumph!

Enjoy your cruise, without trying to control how others choose to enjoy their cruise!

Cheers!

Please show me in the daily planner above where it states the dress code is only a suggestion.  You are making rules to suit yourself.  I imagine that speed limits are also only a suggestion.

Post #23: Daily Planner...Elegant Night...Suggested dress...no Rule

Post #4 (put by another person, screen capture and link to MSC website

...dress code "may be enforced"...no Rule

I care not what others wear on any cruise at anytime.

I am not making up any Rules...nor breaking any Rules.

Was trying to make clear from 5 cruises in the Caribbean this year on MSC, that shorts are allowed...

Other posters on this thread and other threads are misleading MSC Caribbean newbies about what the cruise line allows in reality. Some even state that they want other cruisers to conform to their taste in wardrobe.

Again, I do not care if tux or t-shirt...not everyone wants to play dress up on  a Caribbean cruise VACATION...and based on my experience and that of many others who have posted...MSC doesn't either!

just WOW!

Stop trying to control others and just enjoy your cruise vacation...

Note: I own 3 different styles of tuxedo and multiple suits for events globally....yet Caribbean cruises are not one of those events😎

Cheers!

We sailed in the YC in December on the Seashore and it didn't notice if the dress code was being enforced.  However, on our June cruise in the YC one of the first things our butler said to us was that shorts are not allowed in the YC restaurant during dinner.  We did see this being enforced.  A couple we talked to were asked to change and come back the second night.

My prediction? Savoir faire will be, "Au voir frère."

Given that on 3 Caribbean (Antilles) cruises, Barbados boarding, we have never encountered the types of dress reported I am concluding that the thread title should have clarified that this is for Caribbean cruises from a Florida port!

It seems the two types of Carbbean cruise are being conflated, the Antilles cruises have a much more International passenger demographic with Barbados boarding for UK cruisers and Martinique and Guadeloupe for the likes of Italian/French/Spanish cruisers. Dress on these cruises have always reflected the required MDR codes, in our experience! 😉

My Seashore cruise was predominantly Italians and Spaniards and THEY were the ones wearing shorts to the MDRs, which I was very surprised to see because I had the same thoughts about Europeans and dressing that you do. In fact during lunchtime in the buffet many Italian men would come into the buffet WITHOUT a shirt on and just in pool wear. I thought that was quite uncouth and it reminded me of a Carnival cruise, not a MSC cruise with majority of passengers from Europe!

Where do I even start.

How does "what someone wears" affect the taste of your food?  You're in the MDR to eat and unless the person smells, I don't see a problem.

The people who "get up and walk away" are the people with problems.

agreed.  Never has the quality of my meal factored on the dress of others.

MSC have to take the blame over this issue, it's pointless putting a notice outside the Dining room of the dress code and then allowing a free for all, the same goes for having a suggested dress code for the Gala nights.

You either have one which is adhered to and enforced for that evening or stop suggesting a dress code.
