Rare onlyslightlymad Posted January 27, 2023 #1 Share Posted January 27, 2023 I wouldn't want to be arriving in Auckland tomorrow. Severe rain and flooding. LittleFish1976 Posted January 27, 2023 #3 Share Posted January 27, 2023 My daughter who is in Auckland, sent us photos this evening of the city centre with the roads looking like rivers and cars driving through up to the tops of their tyres. She was riding in a bus and showed the water coming in under the closed doors as they were driving! They must have had 300mm or so during a matter of hours for it to be that bad but I couldn't find any details of rainfall on the metservice website.

That was such a shame as it was cancelled right at the very last minute. Travel to the stadium was going to be difficult as trains weren't running and someone stupidly advised people to drive there. Plenty of people arrived super early in the pouring rain ☔ What a shame for everyone 😪
NSWP Posted January 27, 2023 #6 Share Posted January 27, 2023 Auckland Airport closed too, couple of international flights from Dubai and USA turned around halfway through flight.
Pushka Posted January 27, 2023 #7 Share Posted January 27, 2023 I heard Michael Carr-Greg tweeted angrily that his flight to NZ was cancelled and he'd heard nothing, blaming Qantas etc, like other non celebs do, to gain some kind of kudos. The replies suggested he should keep better track of the news. Fail. 1
Rare Jean C Posted January 27, 2023 #8 Share Posted January 27, 2023 (edited) Pictures of the flooding are unbelievable, people have lost their lives, a house has been lost and others very likely to have damaged foundations, not to mention severe flooding inside. The airport terminal was flooded and a runway light damaged by an earlier incoming plane, so the airport had to be closed. Prayers and heartfelt sympathies to all those affected ♥ 🙏 😪 Edited January 27, 2023 by Jean C
Rare grozzy1 Posted January 27, 2023 #9 Share Posted January 27, 2023 I got off the Norwegian Spirit yesterday, luckily my hotel room was ready. For most people it was a good day to stay indoors. She seemed to be enjoying herself I also had a ticket for Elton John, but didn't even attempt to go to the stadium.
Rare MMDown Under Posted January 27, 2023 #10 Share Posted January 27, 2023 I wonder how many cruise passengers were on the two airplanes which turned around after the closure of Auckland Airport? My thoughts are with people of Auckland experiencing torrential rain and local flooding.

Thank you for photos of a girl enjoying the flooding. Smart move to not attempt to go to Elton John Concert. I was surprised to see how many people were there prior to the concert's cancellation. If you planned to get there early I can see how people were caught out.
Pushka Posted January 27, 2023 #13 Share Posted January 27, 2023 I believe people were told to go early and drive because the train public transport was closed for planned maintenance.

In hindsight concert should have been cancelled in the morning to avoid the transport nightmare. Poor planning, did they not have a contingency plan, I wonder?
Rare arxcards Posted January 28, 2023 #15 Share Posted January 28, 2023 Majestic Princess bailed on Tauranga today, and Norwegian Spirit only berthed for a short time before heading toward the next port. Majestic is due to end her current cruise in Auckland tomorrow. Stay dry!
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted January 28, 2023 #16 Share Posted January 28, 2023 Yikes! I lived in Auckland for 15 years and never saw anything like this. There was always one underpass that flooded in heavy rain but nothing as severe as this lot. Very sad.
Rare grozzy1 Posted January 28, 2023 #17 Share Posted January 28, 2023 There was barely any easing in the rain all day. It was constant Forrest Gump. Today was dry enough to get out and explore, but there was plenty of debris in the CBD
Rare onlyslightlymad Posted January 28, 2023 Author #18 Share Posted January 28, 2023 Apparently an entire summer's worth of rain fell in one day. The wettest day on record.

Obilix Posted January 28, 2023 #20 Share Posted January 28, 2023 Well, at least Molly Meldrum didn't turn up for the concert without his pants on. 1
