COVID on Silhouette

A lot of people are coming back from cruises with various viruses, as it has always been.  Covid is just the newest one to be added to list - norovirus, flu, etc.   Lots of people in an enclosed space leads to a greater chance of getting sick.  People not taking basic precautions (washing, covering face when coughing, staying away when feeling sick) also add to the possibility of getting sick.  We came home from our cruise last May with Covid; friends came down with it after a Viking cruise; other friends came down with it after a week at Sandals in Jamaica.  Thankfully, we are all vaccinated and boosted (I also get a flu shot annually) and our symptoms were mild-moderate.  This isn't going away.  Travel safely and enjoy!

We got off the Edge on Monday and didn’t get Covid, but got the usual ‘cruise crud’. Mostly cold symptoms.

But I must say, I didn’t see a lot of hand washing or Purel use in the buffet. Although someone usually stood at the entrance, they didn’t insist; no ‘washy washy’, as in pre-Covid days. Makes no sense.
The Edge has great hand washing stations right at the entrances, and most still walked right by.

A lot of people jam packing into elevators 10+ deep with no masks at all and coughing and hacking while in the elevators is one way 🙈🙈🙈😷😷

Ya, I think staying out of the elevators and using the stairs is the best approach to avoiding 'issues'.

I haven't been feeling well (mainly exhausted) for the last few days but I avoided the elevators, sat away from busy areas and washed my hands so hoping I'm just run down.

But yeah I noticed on board people packed into crowded spaces, people coughing and sneezing a lot and well avoiding the wash stations when going into the buffet.

Crowds you can't avoid but basic hygiene seems to be the biggest problem

Not all of us have the mobility to do that.. 😞

Wearing a great protective mask can help, along with not getting into a packed elevator; however, there are no guarantees!  Everything is about choices that we can all make to try and stay healthy by keeping our immune system strong.  We are all different, so one size does not fit all!  I am on another TA/b2b, so hope we do not get Covid this time!

So this thread is about one person getting covid out of 2900 guests on a ship.   Why is this a concern.   During on week in any town of 3000 people, how many people get sick?

Probably less than 30 people on that sailing are on cruise critic.   It was one person asking if there were others.  We have groups from our neighborhood who have been on Celebrity cruises where 12 out of 40 have come back positive.   It's a thing.

I think most people here are not saying it's not going to happen, but a bit of basic hygiene would go a long way in avoiding many of the illnesses caught onboard.

Covid is still with us, someone we know from church was hospitalized with Covid last week.

I don't understand people not using the Purel stations on the ships or not washing their hands after visits to the washrooms, see it all the time.

The problem really is that basic hygiene isn't the driving factor with a respiratory disease.  I know lots of people felt cruises were being unfairly targeted early in the pandemic but it's still true that congregate settings put you at more risk of catching COVID. This is why you will still get put in quarantine if you test positive on the ship.  It is what it is at this point.  Everyone should be prepared with the notion that your chances of getting it are increased and have strategies for dealing with it if it happens.  Luckily treatments today are better than they were when cruising was suspended.

Covid is now endemic and will likely always be with us, just like flu, norovirus, and many others. This is now a case of individual risk assessment which everyone must make for themselves. The vast majority will likely deem the risk acceptable and take few, if any, precautions. For those who find this unacceptable, they will have to determine whether taking extra precautions themselves is enough mitigation. If not, being on a cruise ship with thousands of other people may no longer be a viable vacation option.

Yup.  Just off a Royal Princess cruise.  One passenger on CC chose to create a travel log thread.  Nice person.  Thread ended with him having caught Covid and self reported for final 2 days stuck in cabin.

Applaud the self reported sacrifice to help fellow passengers avoid sickness, but the general population was not practicing great hygene.  So for person you originally replied to, even with a small sample size of one person posting a log, we had 1 covid case on our ship for certain.  With all the maskless coughing, I am sure there was more.  Seemed casino related, which was full every night (I think many casino gift cruises were offered to fill the ship) where I saw very few masks.

We always wore one when passing through the casino or in a crowded theater, or when self-serving at the buffet until seated (really wish that could have become habit).

We have stayed covid and illness free on every cruise.

COVID may not be as deadly as before but it remains highly contiguous and constantly mutating to evade vaccine and natural body immunity protections. That's what make COVID a dangerous virus. Besides, who would  want to get sick and end up ruining his/her vacation by Day 5 of the cruise.

Covid on Sihouette?  We could similarly write “covid at the grocery store” “covid at the basketball tourney” “covid in the post office” “covid on the subway” “Covid at the office park” “covid at the coffee shop”

if you leave your home, you take chances

How do you know?  Because you can have it with no symptoms at all, the only way you can know that is to test yourselves post cruise.  Did you?  Because no symptoms doesnt mean no virus

Long before Covid came around, I frequently caught something on cruises or planes and I was one of those weirdos who wore a mask when I flew as far back as about 2010. People travel when they're sick - maybe they know, maybe they don't know. This past week I had an old-school cold. Where did it come from? My husband caught it at work and brought it home to me as a lovely gift. Three years and 2 days after we started hearing ENDLESS PSAs reminding us to wash our hands, people have forgotten how to wash their hands and stay away from others when they're coughing, sneezing or feeling unwell.

So for the OP - I'm neither surprised nor do I think it's going to change. Hope it doesn't drag on for you and ruin the memory of what I hope was an enjoyable cruise.

We were on Infinity last month.  Due to noro the buffet was served by staff.  Example of clueless/careless. A guy gets on the elevator carrying food from the buffet. Someone says something about a balcony feast.  The guy says no, his wife has Covid and he's bringing her food.  Unmasked. Thank you.  Three of the six of us ended up with Covid within a day of returning home. Reminds me of something that Ron White said.

We got off the Solstice last Saturday 3/4. Husband woke up Sunday feeling sick. I lagged by 4 days but we both have Covid after avoiding it for 3 years. Ship was barely half full, we didn’t go to the casino, didn’t eat at the buffet, theater was never crowded nor was Luminae. We mask on planes etc. I’m beating myself up trying to figure out where we got it - best I can figure is the Inside Access/Behind the Scenes tour on the Thursday where they piled 14 of us on an elevator. I was not happy and was at the back or I’d have gotten off. I know we could’ve gotten it here at the grocery or church or out to lunch. So trying to still have good feels about the cruise but it’s not easy!

OP, hope your symptoms are mild. I would say ours are moderate but we both have different ones. Husband has lost smell and taste which I didn’t think was common anymore. Thankfully we are vaxxed and boosted or we’d be in a real mess.

I prefer to use my own sanitizer rather than the stuff at the entry to the buffet.
