Will be in Airlie Beach on Feb 3rd. Is it possible to pick up excursions when exiting the boat like you can in the Caribbean?

Thx

Roseanna

No.  However you can organise for someone to pick you up at the wharf and take you on an excursion.  I went to my favourite place Cape Gloucester for seafood lunch on the beach and enjoyed a cold drink at Dingo Beach Hotel on the way back to the ship.

You might be able to organise land excursions at Airlie Beach, but you won't be able to organise trips to the reef. At Airlie Beach, passengers go ashore by tender (water shuttle). By the time you arrive, the excursion boats going to the reef will have left. In addition, they usually go from Shute Harbour, 12 km away.

Cruise ships have an arrangement with a local company that usually picks up passengers directly from the ship to go to the Reef.

Airlie Beach is a nice little town but not a lot to see and do, however the Great Barrier reef is very accessible. If this is of interest, a ships' shorex would be the best option.

Although it will look costly compared to any private shorex, it is most certainly the case that timing won't suit the tendering process for a private tour.

I’m doing Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas with Princess. Looking for things to do in Airlie Beach. Is it better to do Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas or Airlie beach. Time in port is 7 to 4.

thx

Port Douglas is a good pick for the reef.

There is heaps to do in and around Airlie Beach, but you pretty much need to pre-book.

Been a while, one of the best things we have done in that part of the world is a heli-tour to Whitehaven Beach. They have other options, and nice to see the reef & islands from above.

To do on the day, you can walk off breakfast and head to the markets or lagoon.

Do the RIB trip to Whitehaven Beach. Not only do you get to spend some time on one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia, you'll also get to see many of the Whitsunday islands. It is a wild ride at times though. That RIB is very fast!
