Voyager -storm at sea

Recommended Posts

Just got off the Jan 22nd -27th cruise. Actually B2B since 18th.
Last day of cruise a strong storm began around 1:30. The rain escalated rapidly to the point where ALL outside decks were locked down. My friend and I proceeded to Viking Crown lounge, as our Jr suite balcony had inches of water, and it was coming into our cabin. The VC was crammed full of people, many of whom were young teenagers who were private school students.
The wind was incredible. Tied together lounge chairs on deck 11 were flying around together and culminated into a tangled mess. Then we listed (reports of 8-18 degrees). Bar glasses, liquor bottles flying off shelves and breaking, continued for 3-4 minutes. A huge mess, and many  people severely shaken. I tended to one person( nurse here), and the young people sprung into action to prevent more glasses from breaking under the direction and help  of my friend.
The only announcement overhead was before the dramatic list we experienced, was an urge to “hold on to something now”.
Reports of 80 mph wind gusts and only slightly lower continuous winds, were discussed and overheard from crew members later that evening. This explains why the shelves blew over and crashed in liquor store, perfume shop, and art gallery. Restaurants had dishes and glasses breaking, and were closed down for a while for cleanup. Our cabin experienced breakage of glasses and wine and drawers found wide open. The carpet was pretty soaked by the balcony The scarier damage was in the casino where many slot machines fell over and some on top of a few people. Water was everywhere on the inside  decks and in cabins. The storm intensity lessened after 2.5 hours, but certainly didn’t stop.
The crew were wonderful, placing dryers and towels down for our safety. I congratulate the Captain and all the wonderful people manning the bridge, They navigated us through a difficult storm. Been traveling since 1999 on RCCI, and always feel they keep our safety as their 1st concern. This cruise was no exception.
Thank you RCCI!!!!

BTW, I will give a full review of the cruises, later.

Experienced cruisers, since it sounds like the interior took damage, will that impact the next cruise?

IMO, no. They are already working at putting things back together. I'm sure any items needing replacement have already been ordered and will be waiting on the dock when the Voyager returns back to her home port.

Doesn't seem like there was any true damage, just a bit extra cleanup. I'm sure they have extra glassware and such in place to quickly recover from something like this.

I'd love to be in a storm like that. Though I'm sure my wife would wholly disagree.

I was on my 14 day dream journey cruise. We hit the same thing. I was sitting comfortably mid ship deck 5 when our captain announced we had to return to our cabins. Not sure how long we stayed but seemed to me more dangerous to make a lot of elderly get up walk at a angle to get back to their cabins. While I'm sure it  might be someones idea of fun, being locked in my cabin not exactly fun.

Deck 10 aft and back buffet had water and I saw a river of water across deck 5, I'm sure there are videos of it. One tablemate said the balcony divider gone and the connecting cabin door was open to his neighbor. Buffet opened 30 minutes late and guys burgers stayed open all night I saw.

One guy said 175 cruises and never before told to go to his cabin. Me either. Oddly by sunset the sun was out. I just saw a voyager pax asking if rcl was issuing refunds. Luckily lots missed the ship due to the artic blast came in since we boarded jan 13. Ours was a 14 day cruise. Ours was mostly elderly who take these journey cruises. 1600 plat and diamond their 2 highest levels. Supposedly to have our drink party 2:30 we missed and got a $25 obc. Only voyager I see pax asking for refunds. We only had 19 kids. Ours was a very very elderly group they made go to our cabins. I have some pictures of the lightening which are awesome but cant post to cc. The lighting and thunder was pretty awesome. Couldnt believe my eyes a river of water across deck 5. Some num nuts crew or wind blew a door open to guys pig and anchor right outside which was what I was having for lunch when it hit.

Glad I didnt have a inside cabin to be locked in. Even less my idea of fun. Captain got worried when we took on water and wanted us near our life vests. When the wind died to 45 to 55 knots, whatever that is, is when they let us out of our cabins. First time in 20 years ever had to be sent to my cabin. It would have been more fun if I could be out and about seeing it. Show and bands cancelled also not exactly fun, interesting. Supposed to have been a throw back to 50s party, nope.

Fun is seeing the storm.

When I left yesterday back of buffet still closed. People in balconies deck 9 aft all had water coming thru their ceilings. Going to take a lot to dry all the water damage up I saw. Easy for someone not there to say no big damage. Pretty extensive what I saw. Just money I guess to you to replace broken lo gets and dividers and ceilings and other furniture.

I've been on 75 to 100 cruises I'd guess and this is the worst I've ever seen. And I've been thru hurricanes. I'm diamond on carnival.

This is Carnival Dream, correct?  That has nothing to do with the damage on Voyager, and is probably confusing people reading a Voyager thread.

We were on the Voyager 5-day that left two weeks prior.  This one was our backup and I remember thinking "There were more kids on this Jan cruise than our last 4 combined - we should've picked the other so we avoided the 3-day school weekend."

Things got a little lively on Day 5 of that one though nowhere near to this degree.  My wife was saying "Looks like a wave pool in the Solarium, I'd be all over that if it wasn't like 50 degrees out."  One other time on Navigator out of Galveston the last day (was in November) I think we were headed into a 40kt wind and they actually did an "all is well, no need to panic" announcement in the MDR.

But we're with you. If we're on a ship, we want it to move.  If I didn't want it to move I'd stay in a nice resort.

I was on that voyager of the sea cruise. It was very exciting. I also tode it out up in the Viking crowds lounge. Yes, it was very crowded.  I was there when all the glasses were crashing down on the floor. I actually got it on video. I was not in the wind jammer, but one of my friends was, and she said all the food was on the floor.  I had knowledge of the shops on the Royal promenade, losing liquor, perfume, jewelry, etc. I had not heard about the slot machines falling off. This was definitely a cruise to remember

I was on the Carnival Dream and can confirm that the event @firefly333 described happened. I can't confirm the details. She was out more than I was. I was in my cabin as the storm was happening and wasn't tempted to leave until well after we were released.

Voyager must have been close to us, caught in the same storm or storm cluster at the same time. It sounds like it was hit even harder than we were. You passengers have my sympathies. 😇

This is our 2nd list on a boat. We have done 4 cruises together. So 50% of our cruising experience is getting hit hard by a cold front/thunderstorm with winds high enough to make everyone walk funny or look for the barf bags. I HATE listing!

I can handle all manner of side to side motions, but I found myself getting seasick the first couple of early mornings on this boat. I thought I was immune to it, but luckily I brought dramamine and that helped a lot.

I was scared for those 5 or so minutes, but sighed relief when it straightened up some. This captain did a really good job getting us back to normal. Then we went the other way for a time, though not as bad as the first listing. The first cruise we experienced the list took over an hour to get back to normal. I think this will be my last cruise.

"reports of 8-18 degree list"?  First, there's a huge difference between 8 and 18 degrees. Second, I would only believe what the Captain actually states.  Rumors are of no good because most people can't classify what degree a list is.

You and me both!  Though I'd be looking for ways to get outside to experience it firsthand!

I always get lights red and never win a damn thing at the casino. Yet, for all the cruises I've been on, I can think of only one or two days where there was enough bad weather to affect anything.  Even then nothing more than 10-12 foot waves.

We boarded the Voyager on 27 January and were unaware of the storm (and damages). At 1 pm we went to deck 9 to wait for access to our cabin. Port side guests were allowed to go to their cabin, but starboard was delayed for about 30 minutes.  When we got to our cabin, it looked normal, then we noticed the carpet was soaked. Tried to contact housekeeping, room steward, maintenance and guest services; no one would answer the phone.  So down to guest services I went where the line was beginning to form.  Still not knowing about the storm, I assumed it was just a problem with our cabin. Then I found out that a lot of cabins were flooded, primarily on the starboard side. Guest services said could try and dry out the cabin, but since there were no other cabins available, we would have to stay in the cabins with the blowers going. We opted to debark, with the guarantee our bags would be in the security area when we left.  I was actually told the bag had been located.  Guess what? Our luggage sailed off without us.  We (and other passengers) waited two and a half hours only to hear the departure horn sound around 4:30. After the ship left, we got a text saying we could make arrangements next Thursday to get our luggage.

After 60 cruises, we have experienced bad weather, cancellations, delays, and ship mechanical problems. Things happen, that’s life. But Royal knew the cabins were not in proper condition when they allowed us to board. How do we know that? Some passengers got emails offering them a refund and FCC. We did not.  I can only guess that our value as customers is such that RC felt wet carpet in our cabin was acceptable condition.
