Bringing wine onto port

Recommended Posts

With the allowed bottle of wine per person to bring on board on embarkation day, can I bring that bottle of wine onto one of these ports (Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel)? And if I don't finish that bottle of wine, can I bring it back to the ship?
Thank you.

Yes. Whether the security screeners let you keep (unlikely) it is another matter.

I think you'll be fine taking it off the ship -- they don't care so much about that -- but I don't think you'll be allowed to bring it back on the ship.  They'll think you bought the alcohol on shore and are trying to bypass their rules.

Nope.  That's the rule.  Doesn't matter what port it is outside of embarkation.  If you do, they will confiscate it and you will get it at the end of the cruise. There will always be one or two who said they have done it, but most get caught.

My policy is to never have leftover wine.

Yes, you may bring the bottle “back to the ship.” You may be able to get the bottle to your stateroom.

Finish the wine while ashore to solve the potential issue.

Thank you everyone for your replies.  Your answers help me to decide to bring a small insulated bottle so that I pour the amount of wine that I would consume at port instead of bringing the whole bottle.

Technically most ports don't allow food or drink from the ship onshore and you will see this in the app and printed Cruise Compass.  I've never seen port officials someone for any kind of drink.  Most restrictive port we have seen was Cozumel - they use dogs to check for food.

Smart choice. It'll save you some potential grief.

Why don‘t you simply buy a glass of wine while ashore?

I think it all depends on the security that day. I know they are supposed to take any bottled liquor and give it back to you at the end of the trip, but there were several times we were allowed to bring it back on.

Typically, I always buy a bottle or 2 of Havana Club rum when we stop in Nassau. Out of my last 4 times in Nassau over the past 16 months, only once was it confiscated at security. Every other time they let me grab my bag and continue to my room. The first time it happened, I asked them if they were aware I had bottles of rum, they said yes and that I may proceed with it. Also, these all weren't weekend cruises, some were 7-day Caribbean cruises.

Also, on our Greek Island cruise this past summer we went to a vineyard in Sicily and bought a few bottles. Security looked at them but then gave them back to us to bring to our room. So even though I believe they are supposed to take your liquor, there have been several instances where I was able to bring it back on board. I remember talking to somebody at the casino about this and they said it's since I had the drink package (I don't know how true that is).

I don't know if that's true either but it does make some sense. I'm sure RCI would rather have you drink the booze that you paid for as opposed to booze that they paid for.

Yes, I completely agree....so I could see the logic behind it but not sure if it's an "unwritten rule".
