The Fleet Report and Daily for Monday June 17th, 2024

Recommended Posts

I posted on the cruise air forum but was hoping for some expert advice from the Daily.  Our flights booked on Delta for August 31 have just changed. We are flying from AMS arriving at 7:10 pm to JFK on KLM.  Our flight to BWI departs at 9:10 on Endeavor Air DBA Delta connection.  Will we have enough time to collect our bags and get through customs and immigration? If we do not check bags would we save a considerable amount of time?

Also, in August, are scheduled to dock at Oceankaj in Copenhagen.  It appears to be quite a distance to the city center.  I was wondering the best way to get into town.  Will there be a HAL shuttle? @StLouisCruisers were you in Copenhagen on your current cruise?

Re your flights - Delta now has its own terminal at JFK  and from what I see on the internet your connecting flight is also at terminal 4.   We have flown from/to JFK for most of our international trips.  Delta at JFK has automated passport control which is quicker than regular entry.   Assuming your plane is on time and you get your luggage quickly you should be okay but given what is going on with flights now the 'on time' arrival may be questionable.

Sorry to hear that so many of you are not feeling well - I do hope for quick recoveries for everyone.

@durangoscotsHappy Birthday.

We are getting ready to leave for our Norway and then transatlantic cruise where hopefully I can get to meet @StLouisCruisers - Sandy.  I can't believe how cold it will be but to be honest I hate the Fl heat so for me it will be fine.

Good afternoon, it's 91 with a "real feel" of 101F here.  Got home from the lake house, and have avoided going outside!

I like a root beer float, but don't know about Stewarts root beer.  Did we see Talkeetna on the train trip to Denali?

@durangoscotsHappy Birthday!

@Cruzin TerriHoping you feel better soon, and that DH doesn't get it.  I had it x 2, DH didn't get it.  He had it, I didn't get it.

@StLouisCruisersgood to hear that you're feeling a little better.

Have a good evening.  We're off to DGD's softball game.  Only 3 more left. It's great to see the progress they've made during the season.  Tomorrow evening the concerts in the parks series start here.  There are 2 parks we go to for the music.  Tomorrow evening The "Blues" Brothers are putting on a show!  Last year they had a police escort...we were just arriving when the sirens started...took a bit to figure out what was going on!  😉   Karen

It's 93F and windy, so it wasn't too bad when I went to get the mail.  However, it is just hot enough to not sit outside this afternoon.  The silver polishing is completed and the upper part of the china cabinet is dusted.  Most things in the china cabinet did not need polishing since they do not sit out in the open air.  That helped make the work go faster.  Just another exciting day in central Texas.  Tomorrow will be an early and long day.  I will be going to Waco tomorrow to get some much needed things and for a little retail therapy.  I hope to get away relatively early so I can hit Target and W-M before most places open at 10 am.  I've needed to make this trip for some time, but was waiting until the jeweler called to say my rings were ready.  I try to get as much done in one trip, even if it makes for a long day.

Good Monday afternoon everyone!

Been reading along but not posting much. Everything continues to be great on the Daily; sharing knowledge, the funny memes and caring for everyone. Thanks to everyone for contributing.☺️

The Summer is busy as I expected but really fun with weddings, graduations, baseball games of nieces (so cute!) to name a few things.

This week looks like rainy/stormy, hot with flooding alerts. We are finally out of our >2 year drought but now on the other end of having enough water/rain. It is always something! I should be OK as I don't live too close to water.

Had some really good fresh cherries for lunch. I am thinking they are in season but they were yummy!!

Love a good galette savory or fruit. I downloaded the mushroom and leeks recipe, looks really good! Thanks @dfish.

@durangoscots Susan, Happy, Happy Birthday! 🎂 🥂 If we lived closer I could come by, pick you up for a Birthday lunch. Hope your day is going good!

Also been busy planning my travel schedules. The big news for me is that I booked the 2026 GANZ cruise. I loved, loved the GANZ this past Winter so will go again. I believe I booked about 1 1/2 years out the last time so this is about the same, it just seems long. This time I will know what and what not to do and bring! Lots of laughter around that...LOL.

I also have some trips planned for this Fall and a couple of cruises in the Winter. Seems like alot now that I have written them down!

Safe travels for everyone on a cruise, those cruising soon and those with any kind of travels!  I read about your glorious sailings and have bouts of jealousy!

Prayers for all of us, extra for those in need.🙏

Celebrate your joys no matter the size!! IMO sometimes the small joys are the best.

Please take care everyone.

Caron  😎

Congratulations on booking the 2026 GANZ cruise.  I would love to do that cruise so I wouldn't have the long flights to get to Australia and New Zealand.

I have a new best friend!  The AC tech got the main unit working.  The outside unit wasn't getting an electrical signal.  Problem was a switch was tripped in the attic.  I now know where it is and I can fix it if it happens again.  The window unit in the family room is also working.  That just took switching the breakers off and back on again.  I managed that one myself.  Best news is that it did not cost an arm and a leg for the fix.  No parts needed, just expertise.  We are not worrying about peak hours today as we need to cool the place down.  We can worry about them tomorrow.

@Cruisercl Caron, congrats on booking the GANZ for 2026.  We'd have to win the lottery to do that cruise.  And right now that is down on the list right after new roof, mini splits for the family room and basement, and a powder room on the kitchen/dining/family room level.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Lenda, your brisket sounds a lot like my method for ribs.  I put a dry rub on them the night before and then cook them slowly over indirect heat on the grill.  Long and slow and they are very tender.

Debbie, I'm glad the a/c is fixed and that it was a simple fix.  Your plans for the house sound nice, and I hope you win the lottery.  Being from Texas, we invested in a smoker when we moved back in 1985.  That one was a big charcoal smoker that we left with the house when we moved.  We bought an electric smoker that is a lot easier unless the element burns out.  With that, I can put dry rub on the babyback ribs and smoke them for four hours.  I do wrap them in foil after two hours.  We also do the same thing with a pork Boston butt, but it takes about four to six hours depending on the size.  For brisket and port shoulder, we have a remote thermometer that keeps us from having to go outside to check the temperature.

Nice!  I see that one will be on the Zaandam -- did you book the same cabin you had on the Volendam?  I loved the GANZ, but it was once and done for me because of the heat and humidity.  I'm really glad to have done it though!

Debbie @dfish SO glad the A/C tech got things going again for you.  I was worried when you said how hot it would be.  Your ideas for the house sound good!  We'll want photos, of course, when the work is done.

My plan to have salmon tonight has changed.  I'm having some mild stomach/flu symptoms and that just sounds too rich.  I have no idea where/how I got anything, I haven't been anywhere in days and DH is fine.

Carolyn, I hope you feel better soon.  Stomach/flu is not fun.

Tina, we flew from Athens to JFK in 2016 and had a two hour layover.  Both flights were on Delta, so we were in the same terminal.  The automated passport control was a big help.  As @tupper10 said, a lot depends on whether or not your arrival flight is on time.  Also, the gates both planes use makes a difference.  The concourses we used were very long, especially the arrival concourse and we were at or near the far end on both.  It took 20-30 minutes to get from the gate to Customs.  A lot of passengers, even those who didn't need them, ordered wheelchairs to keep from having to walk.  Since the shutdown and start up, I can't say for sure if you will have enough time.

We have never docked at Oceankaj in Copenhagen, but we did find the local buses easy to use and relatively inexpensive.  They also have a metro, which is nice.

Vanessa, that is not good news about the temperature, thunderstorm warnings and now power.  I hope you get your power back on soon.

You could have seen Talkeetna from the train, as it stops there.  But the station is a ways from "downtown".  Enjoy the DGD's softball game and the summer music concerts.

The #25 bus to Orientkaj (3 stops) and M4 Metro. The travel time is about 20 minutes plus possible waiting time for the bus. The best way to pay the fare is with the Danish DOT phone app. You can install it in advance but you might have to be in Denmark to set up the payment method. When your trip begins on the Metro, pay the fare while still above ground. Taxi or a prebooked car service will be more convenient but significantly more costly.

Power is back on after about a 75 minute outage. It's still thundering, but not raining currently. There were about 40,000 without power the last time I checked the utility's app.

@Sharon in AZ when did you live/work in Limon? My family has been there since at least the early 60's, probably longer. You may have gone to school w/them. @Quartzsite Cruiser I've been to Limon several times since I have family that lives there 😊 Limon is so small, who would have guessed more than one here would know of it?😎

@dfish so glad to hear you got both your main a/c and window unit working - I'm struggling w/the service company so who knows when I'll have air. The high temps w/high humidity have been brutal, especially difficult w/the recent kidney stones. 🥴

@JazzyV good to hear you have power again, prayers 🙏 for the remaining 40k who are w/o.

Thank you Lenda.  It really hasn't been bad, just chills, stomach twinges and slight headache -- it could be much worse.

Still not up for salmon, but hopefully tomorrow.  I have everything to make that delicious Balsamic Glazed Salmon with Strawberry Relish.  Best recipe I've ever gotten on the Daily (thanks again Debbie @dfish!

I hope whatever this is hasn't affected my mind because I got a wild hair this afternoon and started looking for a Pacific Coastal between now and our cruise next June.  Trouble is, neither HAL or Celebrity has anything that would work for us.  So we're looking at Princess....never have sailed Princess -- any tips anyone??

Thunderstorm here now.

I didn't get to the organic market until almost 6:00. They had sold out of pattypan squashes over the weekend but expect to have lots more next week. When I got home I changed the filter for the AC on the bedroom level and turned it on. Changing the filter is a challenge because the fit is very tight.

We"ve done Princess many times w/most recent just before Covid shutdown. They had already launched the medallions but not the tiers/levels of packages, so I'm no help with those.

Medallions worked well, but we learned after boarding that people w/pacemakers should not use them; no issues getting a key card.

We love the International Cafe - most similar comparison is Grand Dutch Cafe.

I don't recall the class of ship, but there's one where the spa entrance is out in the middle of the deck and made us uncomfortable.

We've always had good service and their Creme Brule was fabulous.

Carolyn, I do not have the same cabin but the one right next door to it was available to me so I booked that. I am thinking that it is pretty much the same. Hope so!

Thank you I appreciate it!

Our DD's in-laws just returned from a cruise on Princess so I know about the medallions (no pacemakers here).  We're seriously looking at a 7-day on the Discovery Princess (2 years old).  It would be round-trip Los Angeles in early November.  DH will call tomorrow!

We have sailed them a couple times out of LA (San Pedro, IIRC) w/no issues. We drove each time.

Enjoy!

Just checking in.  Long day, need to sleep -up early to get DH to another doc regarding the artery clogged in his leg. No rest for the weary, as Donna is off tomorrow but still wants me to walk the dog, after the appointment, as she is off to play pool.  She has left the late night Tuesdays for the seniors league-she says the music in the jukebox is much better with her fellow seniors. Have to pick up DH's meds from his dr's office (they give him for free) and then work.

Tonight was Massaman shrimp curry, I finally found it at the Farmers market, bought 3 cans, and now DH says it is too spicy for him.  To me it's curry heaven.

Half the pens on the desk are missing.  Tigger is making a collection.

@1ANGELCATI really wish there was an "ahh" button.  Too cute.

Sweet dreams every one, no matter if you are kidnapping cats or not.🙀

Wow!  That’s unbelievable. Limon is so small just like you said. My family has lived there for generations.  Both my sets of grandparents lived there and my grandfather, my mother’s father, died there in 1934 during the dust bowl days from dust pneumonia. Thirteen children and my mother is the only one still living, she’s 95. Anyway, I would say the family name but don’t want to here. Starts with an “M” and there are a lot of them around along with a construction company with the name.  However, I didn’t live there for very long, because my father went to dental school in Kansas City when I was small and after he graduated we moved to Brush. My parents divorced when I was 13 and we moved to Limon so DM could be closer to her family. This was 1968-1971. We lived there until I was 16 and then moved to Tucson where 2 of her sisters were living.

You have to tell me about your Limon connection.

We were on the Discovery Princess in April for the solar eclipse. I'm trying to decide whether Princess or HAL is my favorite. As mentioned, the 24-hour International Cafe is great! And I love their closet set-up. The Crowne Plaza San Pedro (Las Angeles Harbor) is a convenient hotel to the port. They run an inexpensive shuttle. We flew into LAX on AlaskaAir and used Uber to the hotel. It was interesting that the 20 minute ride from the ferry dock to SEATAC was the same price as the 40 minute ride to the hotel.
