Solo Cruiser can only book single cabins on Edge class ships

Yes I have seen them!  Your not booking one is your choice and it has no bearing on my willingness to book one if sailing solo.  Thank you very much.

I said they're not for me.  I did not opine about their suitability for you.  Everyone gets to choose what works for them.

If I were sailing solo I’m not sure I would consider the solo IV either.

Aren’t the only seating options in the cabin either the reportedly uncomfortable “verandah” chairs or the bed?

I like a sofa or at least an upholstered occasional chair and ottoman.

What other lines are still offering generous solo supplements on their double-capacity staterooms?

I am sure there must be at least a couple.

I guess I read a different tone to “Have you seen those solo cabins? than was intended.  My apologies.

If I were cruising solo I would chose a solo cabin vs a double occupancy cabin with a high solo supplement.

I'm a solo traveler and I frequently can get a regular cabin and pay 200% solo supplement and it's still cheaper than the few solo cabins that are available.

So folks didn’t like the solo supplement and that’s gone?  If you are a solo traveler, how much are you willing to pay?  Because I would love to get a cabin for two but pay the price for one pax.

I’m willing to pay the solo supplement.

I don’t think this is going to do what they think it’s going to do. It’ll just push more people - assuming they stay with X - into booking for 2 and person 2 being a no-show at the port.

I've gotten some engagement on FB... They had a generic post about what is your favorite memory of cruising on Celebrity and I said "Being able to book something other than a Solo IV on Edge-class ships." And "they" seemed to not know what is happening but asked me to DM them. I've done that complete with screen shots for the cruise I was looking to book on board showing how putting in 1 passenger makes everything but Solo IVs show as "Sold Out" yet if I go and put 2 passengers everything shows.

We'll see where this goes.

As expected, nada. They just say "Oh, it appears that there are restrictions on some of the cabins. If you contact our specialists, they can check with Revenue to see if they may be able to override that."

No thank you. I'll just change to a line that allows me to book what I want.

Well, I was looking into booking the Edge to Alaska in September, as a single, just to see if I liked the ship.  Apparently, that's not going to happen!

Edge looks to be sold out for September.

I can book any cabin as a solo on Edge Sept. 2025.

I looked at those cabins when they first came out and they weren't much cheaper than paying the 200% single supplement, but they were a lot smaller.  I'd rather pay a few more dollars and be comfortable in a regular size cabin.  I haven't looked at them lately, so I have no clue how the pricing is currently running.  Once I decided I couldn't live in a cabin with very little closet & drawer space, I completely lost interest.

Thanks for that.  I don’t think it’s fair to charge solo cruisers 2x as much but it seems some folks want to get a regular size cabin but not pay extra for it.  Why shouldn’t Celebrity charge more for a cabin that holds two people?

I've said multiple times, I do not mind paying the solo supplement. But I should have the right to book it and not be relegated to a solo cabin if I don't want that.

I see that.  I would like to hear from others.  I see comments like “a supplement is unfair”, “a single is too small, I want a double”.  I am NOT saying that you wrote that.

What would you like to hear? I'm a solo cruiser.

I think you might be confusing what "unfair supplement" means. Celebrity was charging more for a solo passenger than for 2 regular passengers in the same room.  That is unfair. Paying a solo supplement that is usually 150%-200% is not unfair.

What I am thankful for, is now I can search the solo prices on Celebrity's website. That's a huge improvement.

Out of curiosity I took a look at the Celebrity website for solo vs. couple bookings on E-class ships. I looked at 10 different cruises on the four ships later this year and next year. From what I could see, 8 of those cruises did not have any obvious restrictions on stateroom selection for solo cruisers while two of them did (certain categories were listed as not available for solo cruisers but were listed as available when there were 2 people in the stateroom). Obviously not a thorough review but it was interesting to see.

I think that solo cruisers should have reasonable options and be able to make choices based on personal preference. For me, I found the single IV staterooms to be a good choice when the price was much lower than the alternative and when the itinerary meant I wouldn't be spending a lot of time in the stateroom (e.g., a port-intensive Med cruise). Otherwise I would prefer to pay extra for a regular stateroom with more space and storage. I am ok to pay 200% for a regular stateroom (provided the underlying fare is reasonable). I did not consider the 250-300% Celebrity was charging solo cruisers earlier this year to be fair.

Do you think a single person should pay half what two people pay for a two person cabin because you are the only one using it?  When Celebrity could possibly sell that cabin to two people?

Yes I agree that 250% is unfair.  Do you think 200% is unfair?

I’m not thrilled with 200%, but I think 150-175% is fair. I realize I am using a room designed for 2, but I also doubt that in all cases that extra person is spending that much extra onboard.

Had I not been completely spoiled to Blu so that I am an Aqua Class “snob” now, I would have no issues with the solo IV. It was perfectly fine before I splurged on Aqua last year! 🤣🤣

I don’t travel solo but if there are “single” rooms on a ship that are smaller and designed for one person not two then they should half the price if a room for one.  I understand the business end though, as well as the business end of solo supplements, etc.  Logic and fairness clearly aren’t playing a role.

Not at all.  Now it makes sense for cruise lines to occasionally wave the fee if they know the rooms will go empty - that's actually how Celebrity got me to book my first cruise with them. 7 day cruise to Alaska with no solo supplement but that was right after Covid when you still had to get tested and all that.

No, 200% is not unfair.

I don’t mean for this to sound rude.  I don’t know about you but we spend quite a lot onboard, both of us.

Can’t we turn this around and say that one person probably doesn’t spend as much as two people so why should cabins be charged at half price?  Shouldn’t they stay at 150% or 175% which seems generous to me.

I could understand a bidding system where singles can take unsold cabins at 50% of the normal rate.

I think what people call unfair is to pay more than double occupancy. There was a time when it was more expensive to book a regular cabin for a single person than it was for 2.

I am thinking that it could be due to open solo cabins:cruises with no solo cabins left show all cabin types and cruises with solo cabins still available only allow for this type of cabin. I am keeping track to see if other cabins open up once solo cabins are sold out. There are still 5 left in my cruise

The cruise I looked up the other day had all cabin types available including solo.
