Celebrity Iconic Suite Rough in Front?

 Share

Recommended Posts

We are thinking about a big splurge.  However, this suite is located in the front of the ship.  Anyone have experience as to how rough this could be on a bad sea day?  We have been in mid to aft suites with no issue.

Thanks for any insights.

Welcome to CruiseCritic!

Keep in mind that this always depends upon just how rough the seas actually are, or not, as well as the specific heading/speed/etc., of the ship.

We love forward facing suites.  Love to see where we are going, etc. 🙂  Yes, even when it's just "more water"!

We've never had any "trouble" with rough seas in any forward facing suite, but we've never encountered really heavy seas when in those suites, and that last fact is important.

OTOH, the most "movement" we ever had was when we were in an aft suite (no forward suites on that ship).  We were off the coast of Norway, in winter, and one afternoon, the Captain made an announcement that starting at some point in the evening, we should expect a lot of ocean motion and to plan to stay in our cabins.

So... "it" started rather abruptly, and we were in our LR.  We thought, this is okay, no problem.  Ha!

It then got worse, fast.

We tried to get to our bedroom, and couldn't walk, not even holding on to the furniture or walls.  We ended up *crawling* on hands and knees and struggled to get to the bed... where we climbed in and stayed there until morning.  We had the bow camera TV on, and WOW!! What a scene.  I knew I didn't get seasick, but had always been worried about being scared.

However, nope... for whatever reason, I didn't worry (er, not too much...!).

Accommodations in the front of the ship probably had a much more dramatic "Wild Mouse amusement park type ride".

Anyway, it's impossible to guarantee "no wild ride" in bad weather, no matter where on a ship one is, although certain locations will experience any "ride" more or less than other areas.

Are you concerned about getting sick or worried/scared (and it may not matter which!)?

The short answer is it is impossible to predict how heavy the seas may be on any given day on any given itinerary.  But when they are heavy, the further forward and higher the decks, the more the up and down motion moving forward will be felt. There is no way to mitigate this. The rolling side to side motion is felt the same anywhere on the ship, but most exaggerated the higher the deck.  But this is the motion the stabilizers work to mitigate.

The Iconic suites are very forward on a higher deck.  You decide.

Hello @Forestkitty and welcome to the Cruise Critic website & our message board!

Thank you for your first new thread on the Ask s Cruise Question forum! However, it is the forum for general questions regarding cruising. Your inquiry was off topic there since it concerns a specific cruise line ship. Your first new thread has been moved to the Celebrity Cruises forum where it will be on topicBrowse through the thread titles in this forum looking for threads of interest. You may find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

The Cruise Critic website and message boards are both great resources for new as well as experienced cruisers and we are so glad you found us! Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community categories list of the various forums. I suggest you put the page link in your browser's Favorites for quick & easy access in the future. Please read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in most forums. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following portion from the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread on one of our various forums, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will post replies to you.

Also, it is best to limit each inquiry message to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention the cruise line, ship, sail date or port in your inquiry message if that sort of information will help your fellow Cruise Critic members help you.

Once you book your cruise, be sure to check if there is an existing Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your specific cruise line, ship and sail date. If not, feel free to start one! And don't worry about any responsibilities in starting a Roll Call thread. Roll Calls belong to everyone; there is no designated leader or owner. It does not matter who started the thread. Roll Calls are for Cruise Critic members on the same cruise. They get to know one another online before their cruise so there will be all kinds of discussion in the Roll Call thread for their cruise!

Please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll Call. For more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the Guidelines.

The specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date is the ONLY place on the Cruise Critic message boards where you and your fellow Roll Call thread members are allowed to post personal ads about sharing private tours, excursions or transportation with each other to save money. There is a "captive audience" there since you are all sailing together! Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that may have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, they may have already posted share requests that may interest you.

If you ever need technical help in regard to using the Cruise Critic message board software, go to the Need Help Using the Forums? Check Here! forum. You will see a large amount of "How to..." pinned threads on the forum's first page. Also, browse through the threads in the forum looking for threads of interest. As with other forums on our boards, you may find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope this information will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. We are soooo glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Happy sails,

Host Kat

We have never had a room right at the front but have at the rear and yes we got more motion. However, we loved the wake views and would do it again!

Our next cruise is right at the front on Reflection. However, it is not on a cruise where I would expect bad weather. I will take sea sickness pills with me and if bad weather is predicted I will take them. Temped by the views again!

The only cruises I wouldn’t risk a very front or rear room would be one where rough weather is quite common (TA, TP and perhaps those heading through the North Sea).

Hopefully someone who has experienced the Iconic Suite will respond but motion sensitivity is very personal. Just because they have been fine or felt sick doesn’t mean you will…

We did the Iconic suite on the Apex and the noise was terrible. There were popping noises all the time in the ceiling in the master bath and the cabin. These noises could not be fixed. I was given a concierge cabin for sleeping. The second bedroom has the washing equipment next to it and it wasn’t tied down so more noise. You really can’t use the balcony at sea due to the wind. We will never go on one like that again. We have been in the PH on the E class and enjoyed the balcony and the suite.

We once had a balcony two from the bow of Eclipse and it was rough on an overnight departure from Southampton.  I suspect had we been awake it would have been more noticeable.

There is however a further downside of being near the front.  You will experience all the noises as the ship prepares to dock.  Large doors opening, chains being moved, motors pulling ropes, crew shouting.  Just what you need from 5am!

Exactly!  It is all about the science.  If the seas are rough, there is more motion far forward or aft, and higher up. That's a non-debatable fact. I really, really hate it when people respond saying they felt no motion at all.  Good for them.  Maybe the seas were flat that cruise.  Maybe they would have felt the motion had the seas been 20-30' which I have sailed in (fortunately not too often).  I am prone to seasickness myself so accurate answers on this topic are very important to my fellow sufferers!

it's all about the science and the seas - period.

The villa suites are a fraction of the price and very nice if stairs are not a problem. It is fairly far forward but I've been lucky with the seas.  You will also get sun on the balcony at certain parts of the day, which you won't get in the Penthouse.   There are lots of reviews.

We only sail in ICs and EVs. Great staterooms. But, only sailed seas (i.e., Med, Caribbean, Alaska inside), not ocean crossings. No issues.

Absolutely unforgettable balconies (with hot tub) in either stateroom, IC being unparalleled views while underway.

The wind isn't an issue as the shape of the glass in front on the IC balcony is good for air flow. Having said this, you may need to hang onto towels if laid out on the chaise or chairs.

Best part, which I like, is the 270 degree views and massive bathroom jacuzzi tub! Your room attendant will fill that every night when you're at dinner/drinks.

Worth every penny.
