Desdichado62 Posted April 15, 2014 #1626 Share Posted April 15, 2014 (edited) Ditto :D Now for the question! I had looked into the roof top walk and we decided against it. However, when I was reading reviews, someone mentioned a building with an inexpensive elevator to an awesome observation view of Stockhom. Naturally, I can't find the information now :( Is this something that you know about? I think the building/elevator you are referring to is Katarinahissen with it's viewing deck. The elevator itself is closed until 2019 but I think the viewing deck might be open although I've read that it is supposed to undergo renovations during 2014 so there is a risk that it might be closed when you're ship is in. http://www.dn.se/sthlm/katarinahissen-oppnar-pa-nytt/ The cheapest option for a good view of Stockholm would be Katarinavägen and Fjällgatan. Travelanni Posted April 16, 2014 #1628 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Hi, greetings from a fellow 'local' contributor now about to be a cruiser. Have read all your advice and made a plan but still have a few questions. We dock in Frihammen on 15th May from 7:30 to 16:30. Far too short but that's the way it goes. As I intend to do a land trip to Stockholm in 2015 with my daughter who is not interested in ships, I have planned the following just to get an over view of Gamla Stan and spend most of my time at the Vasa Museum. Ship docks Frihammen - 7:30 to 16:30 Buy 24hr pass - 70SEK senior. 76 bus to Gamla Stan. Every 10 mins. approx 20mins ride. See - Royal Palace, Cathedral, Market Place. Walk through to Slussen. Ferry - Slussen to Almänna Gränd Every 15 mins. Walk to Vasa Tram from Vasa Museet to Djurgadsbron 76 bus from Djurgadsbron to Frihammen Questions:- Does the ferry stop at the Vasa landing stage as it appears to do on the map or only at Almänna Gränd ? Can I walk along the waterfront? Are the trams quite frequent ? (I am having trouble figuring out the timetables) Are the tram and bus stops in the same place at Djurgadsbron ? Approx. how much time would you allow to get back to the ship from the Vasa Museum ? Your comments on this plan, corrections to anything I have wrong and any other help you can give would be much appreciated. Thank you, :). Desdichado62 Posted April 16, 2014 #1629 Share Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) Hi, greetings from a fellow 'local' contributor now about to be a cruiser. Have read all your advice and made a plan but still have a few questions. Anni Does the ferry stop at the Vasa landing stage as it appears to do on the map or only at Allmänna Gränd ? The harbour ferries (Djurgårdsfärjan) only stops at Allmänna Gränd. Can I walk along the waterfront? Yes you can partially walk along the waterfront: http://kartor.eniro.se/m/nJqQU Are the trams quite frequent ? (I am having trouble figuring out the timetables) Are the tram and bus stops in the same place at Djurgadsbron ? I would suggest that you skip the tram from Vasa/Nordiska museet and walk to the bus stop at Djurgårdsbron since it is more or less the same distance to walk to the tram stop as to the Djurgårdsbron stop http://kartor.eniro.se/m/up80e Approx. how much time would you allow to get back to the ship from the Vasa Museum ? SL journey planner says that the trip will take around 10 minutes so add another 5-10 minutes to be on the safe side. The bus frequency is one bus every 10 minutes until at 15.54 when the frequency changes to one bus very 6-7 minutes. The destination on the bus front display says Frihamnen which is the bus' end stop. use http://reseplanerare.sl.se/bin/query.exe/en From Djurgårdsbron (stop) to Frihamnen (stop). The only problem for you is that hardly anything is open before 10.00 so you'll have two hours before you can enter the Palace. Perhaps you could make your way to The café called Vetekatten? http://www.vetekatten.se/ It opens at 07.30 and a well know and highly renowned café with a very large variety of pastries. It is located at Kungsgatan 55. The easiest way to get there is to go with blue bus #1 from Frihamnen towards Stora Essingen, get off at Hötorget and walk from Hötorget to the café. https://www.google.se/maps/dir/59.3350195,18.0613823/59.3342654,18.0585161/@59.334696,18.0598519,18z/data=!4m4!4m3!1m0!1m0!3e2 From the café it is a 20 min walk to the Royal Palace. https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Kungsgatan+55,+111+22+Stockholm/59.3261686,18.0725363/@59.327017,18.0734858,17z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m10!1m1!1s0x465f9d67318d25af:0x35b626fd1552520e!2m2!1d18.0585834!2d59.3342025!3m4!1m2!1d18.0696159!2d59.3263142!3s0x465f9d589e2eafe7:0x8133f8a7b43a46dd!1m0!3e2 Edited April 16, 2014 by Desdichado62
FlightMedic555 Posted April 16, 2014 #1630 Share Posted April 16, 2014 In July we fly into Stockholm and have 2 nights at the Sheraton before we board our cruise ship. The day we board the ship stays in Stockholm overnight. All in all it looks like we will have about 3 full days to explore Stockholm. I am pretty confused about the various transport options. I am not a fan of HOHO buses (primarily because I have a hard time hearing anything with the headsets on these types of trips). We also need to somehow get from the airport to the hotel and on the last day from the hotel to the pier. Any suggestions?

To get from the airport to the hotel I would recommend either Airport train or airport coaches. The train is called Arlanda Express and the coaches are called flygbussarna. The Hotel is very close to where both of these transports arrive in Stockholm. https://www.google.se/maps/dir/59.3322709,18.0563152/Sheraton+Stockholm+Hotel,+Tegelbacken+6,+101+23+Stockholm/@59.3313528,18.0601734,17z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5fbd8a2865:0x48f87179ae6b63db!2m2!1d18.061302!2d59.328899!3e2 https://www.arlandaexpress.com/stockholmcitymap.aspx From hotel to pier depends on where your ship dock. Stockholm HoHo buses generally have a poor reputation and I have experience from them myself. Very expensive, poor guiding (pre recorded audio) and etc. As for transport within the city. Stockholm have a very extensive public transport so use that to get around. Use http://sl.se/en/Visitor/Plan-your-journey/ to find bus/tram/subway connections. or http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/visitor/djurgarden-ferry/maps-ferry-terminals/ for info about harbour ferry. As for what to do, the only real musts are Vasa and the Old town. Possible also the Royal Palace. The rest depends on your interests. Perhaps a day trip to either of Mariefred or Drottningholm or Sigtuna? Since you have almost three full days I would reocmmend you to acquire the Stockholm card. http://www.visitstockholm.com/en/stockholmcard/ Edited April 16, 2014 by Desdichado62

Desdichado62 Posted April 17, 2014 #1635 Share Posted April 17, 2014 Transportation options from Stadsgarden 160 to Hotel Stureplan, Birger Jarlsgatan 24? We don’t mind walking although it looks like it’s about 30 minutes and would rather not do it with luggage. We disembark in Stockholm on Sunday, May 25. It will require some walking but the major part of the route will be with bus. Your arrival date is not available for search yet but searching for May 11th indicates that you have several bus routes to choose from. Unfortunately this means you still have to walk from the ship to Slussen which is almost 1km (about 0.6). https://maps.google.se/maps?saddr=Ok%C3%A4nd+v%C3%A4g&daddr=59.319666,18.0733641+to:Katarinav%C3%A4gen+to:S%C3%B6dermalmstorg&hl=sv&ie=UTF8&sll=59.318526,18.074355&sspn=0.00433,0.016512&geocode=FbgdiQMd8gMUAQ%3BFXIliQMdFMcTASm3GZZX-3dfRjGMeEebiDKqqg%3BFbgjiQMdLsYTAQ%3BFRooiQMdMcATAQ&t=h&dirflg=w&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=17&via=1&z=17 On this link, the terminal is located at C and Katarinavägen stop is located at B. From Slussen there are several buses to choose from: Blue bus #2 from Katarinavägen towards Nortull. departs every 15 minutes. Get off at Stureplan and walk approx 200m to the hotel. Red bus #55 from Slussen terminal towards Hjorthagen. departs every 30 minutes. Get off at Stureplan and walk approx 200m to the hotel. Here is a map of the terminal: http://sl.se/ficktid/karta%2Fvinter/S%F6dermalmstorg%5Fterm.pdf This map is downloadable (for me it displayed much better when I watched the downloaded file) Please note that Blue Bus listed under F is not your bus #2, the correct one is listed under K (Katarinavägen). #43 and #55 both departs from C. The only other alternative then bus (or subway) is taxi. Respected companies are Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir and Taxi 020. Can you recommend the fastest/cheapest way to get there from the vasa museum? The fastest way (excluding taxi) is probably to take tram (7) to Nybroplan and walk (uphill) the last 400 meters to Östermalms Torg. The cheapest way is of course to walk all the way (0.9 miles). :D A more complex option is to take bus 44 to Karlaplan and then the subway to Östermalms Torg (be sure to take the correct exit or you'll end up at the bottom of the hill instead) Then from Ostermalms Saluhall to the Old Town? Take the subway. Östermalms Torg-Gamla Stan

It depends where your ship docks, from Frihamnen there is a boat shuttle that sometimes (but very rarely) stops at Allmänna Gränd on Djurgården island (close to Vasa). So from Frihamnen bus is basically the only option. From Stadsgårdskajen there is usually HoHo boats that goes directly to Vasa in the morning when a cruise ship arrive at Stadsgårdskajen berth. To maximize use of time and see the most, do you recommend a guided tour or doing something on our own to see Gamla Stan, Riddarholmskyrkan, Storkyrkan, ? What priority should we give Skansen? Are there boat tours around Stockholm? Do it yourself: Priority 1 is Vasa museum, priority 2 is Gamla stan. If you have some time to spare goto Storkyrkan or Riddarholmskyrkan. As for Skansen you probably won't have time for it as it requires at least 2-3 hours to go though it even if you "rush" through it. 1: Vasamuseet https://www.google.se/maps/place/Vasamuseet/@59.328264,18.091693,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x465f9d546d8329af:0xcff09af1b4c13241 2. Desdichado62 Posted April 23, 2014 #1646 Share Posted April 23, 2014 (edited) The fastest way (excluding taxi) is probably to take tram (7) to Nybroplan and walk (uphill) the last 400 meters to Östermalms Torg. The cheapest way is of course to walk all the way (0.9 miles). :D A more complex option is to take bus 44 to Karlaplan and then the subway to Östermalms Torg (be sure to take the correct exit or you'll end up at the bottom of the hill instead) Another option is to go with Ressel Rederi's M/S Emelie (ferry) from Allmänna Gränd to Nybroviken (Nybroplan) and walk from there. However this ferry only goes once an hour. Price is 50SEK and they do not accept cash, card payment only. http://kartor.eniro.se/m/e8rUZ http://www.ressel.se/tidtabeller/ http://ressel.se/pdf/2014_Tidtabell%20Emelie.pdf Edited April 23, 2014 by Desdichado62

Harbour20 Posted April 30, 2014 #1650 Share Posted April 30, 2014 Desdichado62 You mentioned back a few threads about this boat service being new. Is it currently in service? I have looked on their website and I could by tickets in advance, but I am reluctant to do that without much knowledge of their service. Any advice about purchasing tickets before arriving on a cruise ship. It would be nice not to have to wait in lines to get tickets. It also would be nice not to wait in line for tickets for the Vasa Museum and Skansen as well. Do you know how we could accomplish that?
