This is a "generic" answer to several of you and I am unable to provide a more detailed answer at the moment.

For bus connections and times use http://sl.se/en/ to find connections.

For where to find where to buy tickets select Sales point at the map at the link above.

Bus #76 takes you from Frihamnen to Vasa (Djurgårdsbron) to Gamla Stan (slottsbacken & räntmästartrappen) and back to Frihamnen.

For transport Vasa-Gamls Stam you can also travel with Djurgårdsfärjan (info is in the thread).

There is no HoHo boats from frihamnen only Sjövägen but it's schedule isn't always suitable for cruise pax.

From Stadsgårdskajen (Londonviadukten if docking at S167) use link above to find bus connections or see posts about HoHo boats further up on this page.

For connections from/to Airport/cruise terminal. It depends on budget.

Cheapest way is probably public bus or commuter train, most convenient is probably taxi or Arlanda Express.

galliegirlie, you will need Swedish cash, some places might accept Euros but it is hard to know in advance.

In general Euros are not accepted in Swedish stores and etc.

NorbertsNiece, make your way to Stockholm central station and put your luggage in a locker.

There's info a couple pages back in the thread.

vk8cruiser, for travel directions to/info about Drottiningholm, search this thread for Drottningholm. I made a fairly detailed answer a couple of months ago.

I have some transportation questions. Some of these may be answered somewhere on this thread, but it is very long.

I want to get from Frihamnen Berth 634 to Vasa as soon as it opens on a Saturday. Our ship docks at 8am. Is the best way a taxi or HoHo boat?

From there we will go to Gamla Stan. I think there is a boat, but I am not sure what is the best way.

From there we have reservations at the Ice Bar at 2:15pm or 14:15. Is it far to walk or what is the best way there?

From there we need to get back to the ship at Frihamnen. What is the best way to do that?

Thank you.

Hi - Are you by any chance on the NCL Star too? If so, perhaps we can split a cab from Frihammen to the Vasa - we also want to be there early. There are two of us. Let me know and we can work out the details!

Desdichado62, we will be in Frihamnen Berth 638 on Sat 28/6/2014. We will be docked over night and would like to take the HOHO bus during the day and do a dinner cruise from 6 -8:30 pm. If we buy a ticket for the HOHO bus for the day can we use it to get back to Frihamnen after the dinner cruise? If not what is our next option? The dinner cruise leaves Stadshusbro. Thanks for your help. :)

Wanted to share some information I received about my questions for the early HoHo boats and one stop tickets. I wrote to both Stromma and Red Sightseeing.

Stromma responded back saying that they do NOT have an "early" direct boat to Vasa. Their boats start at 10am.

Red Sightseeing responded back saying that there will be a boat ready to debark as soon as the ship people get there. I tried to clarify if there was an exact time of departure and saying our ship gets in at 8am, but they just wrote back again that they will be there waiting as soon as people exit the ship. They also said that their "shuttle" one stop ticket is 60 SEK.

The HoHo tickets are usually valid for 24 hours but HoHo buses/boatd don't run at the time when you get back from the dinner cruise. HoHo services usually stop around 17.30/18.00.

So you will have to use public buses or take a taxi.

However make sure you buy bus tickets before you go on your dinner cruise. see this post: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=42752621&highlight=bus+tickets#post42752621

I tried searching for Drottningholm but failed. We were in Stockholm in 2007 and did all the usual sights in the city; thus we think on this one-day cruise overnighter at Frihamnen on June 28, we'll try Drottningholm. Please give us a pointer to your previous post(s) on Drottningholm.

Would a 24-hr Travel Card cover public transportation from Frihamnen to Drottningholm and back? Does the Travel Card apply to the ferry service from Stadshuset to Drottningholm? Are persons over 65 eligible for the reduced price (70SEK) on the Travel Cards? Where can I buy a Travel Card at Frihamnen?

Thanks.

As for the travel card, it does not cover the boat to/from Drottningholm only the bus to/from the boat to Drottningholm since it only covers public transport and the boat to Drottningholm is a private owned cruise line (Strömma).

You can buy the travel card here: http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag158/ThunderboltDragon/SL-frihamnen_zps2ef6c0a5.png you can find more sale locations at http://sl.se/ check the box at försäljning to find more sale locations.

As for eating at where the boat departs, I don't know if there are any good restaurants nearby, but you can either eat on board the boat or at Drottningholm.

I don't know how much time it will take to go through it but I am sure that you could spend many hours there.

We are staying 2 days before our cruise. We are considering 1/2 day Archipelago cruise. Any suggestions on where to go or is worth using 1/2 day out of 2.

Well there aren't that half day cruises available and you won't get especially far if you want to make it there and back in just half a day.

It also depends on what ship you are going on and which route it takes, then it depends on what you want to see.

There are several organized trips with Strömma who also offers dining cruises which usually goes to Waxholm and back.

Blidösundsbolaget and Waxholmsbolaget offers public transport in the archipelago with many destinations.

Worth it or not, it is entirely up to you.

Would love some advice for our upcoming stop in Stockholm. We overnight there, arriving at 8am on the first day and leaving at 5pm on the second. We are tendering from the ship though, with people assuming we will get dropped off on Skeppsbron. I would assume we would not be on dry land until 9am at the earliest on the first day.

The places we'd really love to see are:

  • Vasa Museum
  • ABBA Museum
  • Östermalms Saluhall (food hall)
  • City Hall (tour)
  • Changing of the Guard at noon

My concern/stress is around planning how to get to these places, which are fairly spaced out. The Vasa and ABBA Museums are very close to one another, so I was considering pairing those together, with lunch in between.

We are not opposed to walking (we live in NYC, after all!), but walks of 25+ minutes seem excessive, especially if it's hot outside. Are there recommendations on which public transit to use and approximate cost? It sounds like we should avoid taxis from what I've read as many tend to rip off people. Thank you in advance for your advice/help!

Would love some advice for our upcoming stop in Stockholm.

The only concern is that you will be docking on Midsummer (Major Holiday) and many stores will be closed. Vasa is open both days.

The changing of the guard is also taking place every day of the year.

Unfortunately for you Östermalmshallen is closed both days. I am not sure about the City hall.

If you want to know for sure email them at the address listed at this website: http://www.stockholm.se/OmStockholm/Stadshuset/Guidade-visningar/Information-*****-visningar/Visningar-i-juni1/

I would do Vasa+Abba on day 1.

you have some info on how to get to to Vasa from the tender drop off here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2052272

However according to the ship list, your ship is scheduled to dock at Stadsgårdskajen at June 20th;

http://www.stockholmshamnar.se/Hamnkarta/Fartygstrafik/

EURODAM 2014-06-20 07:00 S167 STADSGÅRDEN

In that case see this thread for transport options: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2053396

Getting from Vasa to Abba museum is very easy just walk along the water until you reach Allmänna gränd. Take a left turn x 2 and you 'll be at the museum.

Since Östermalmshallen is closed, I would recommend you to visit Skansen instead and participate in a traditional Swedish celebration of the Midsummer holiday.

Day 2:

Gamla Stan+ Changing of the Guard+City Hall (if open).

Start with the City Hall, guided tour in English at 10.00

get there with bus 53.Be early to make sure you cen get in on the 10.00 tour.

Then when the tour is over walk back to the Royal Palace for the changing of the guard which starts at 13.15

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Stockholms+stadshus,+Hantverkargatan+1,+111+52+Stockholm,+Sverige/59.3263308,18.0696028/@59.3259052,18.0691576,16z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f77df9092cde9:0xaeafc90d911394c0!2m2!1d18.054346!2d59.327451!1m0!3e2

Then when the changing of the guard is over stroll around Gamla stan until you make your way back to the ship.

Most stores is probably closed due to Midsummer and basically only tourists will be around.

Thank you so much for this fantastic advice! Apologies, I should have provided our docking dates are July 2-3, so we should miss the midsummer holiday. Our cruise starts on June 26 out of Copenhagen.

Knowing that, how would you recommend incoroporating Östermalmshallen? I would love to do lunch there as they close by 6pm, but the location isn't very convenient to Vasa/ABBA Museum or City Hall.

One note on VASA, we were there two weeks ago and got to VASA at 10:30am. Three ships in port. There was a 20 minute wait to get in the door and we had our tickets in hand. They said to come back in the afternoon when the lines were much shorter.

Ok no problem regarding the date, your signature said June so I assumed you were coming here the 3rd week in June.

Anyway do it like this:

Ship (Räntmästartrappan)->Vasa-Djurgårdsfärjan

Vasa->Abba->Östermalmshallen.

Vasa->Abba is a short walk along the water:

Abba-Östermalmshallen, either tram 7 from Liljevalchs/Gröna Lund stop

or:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=42536019&highlight=ressel#post42536019

to Nybroplan and walk from there.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Stockholm+Nybroplan/%C3%96stermalms+Saluhall,+%C3%96stermalmstorg,+114+42+Stockholm,+Sverige/@59.3339789,18.0789051,17z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5bb559edd5:0x35c4743cccabec4c!2m2!1d18.076552!2d59.33273!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5b24096139:0x3d784e22bab4355a!2m2!1d18.078389!2d59.336035!3e2

Then you have the rest of the day of to do whatever you want.

Perhaps walk to NK and from NK to Drottninggatan?

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/%C3%96stermalms+Saluhall,+%C3%96stermalmstorg,+114+42+Stockholm,+Sverige/NK+Stockholm,+Hamngatan+18-20,+111+47+Stockholm,+Sverige/59.3328939,18.0623909/@59.3336459,18.0656449,17z/data=!4m15!4m14!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5b24096139:0x3d784e22bab4355a!2m2!1d18.078389!2d59.336035!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5c19adfc51:0x71d7e22255fa1cde!2m2!1d18.069171!2d59.333152!1m0!3e2

Both are in the shopping area of Stockholm.

The second day I would do it the same order as in my previous post with city hall directly in the morning followed by changing of the guards and strolling around Gamla Stan.

Go with bus 3 from Mälartorget to City Hall stop:

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Stockholm+Nybroplan/%C3%96stermalms+Saluhall,+%C3%96stermalmstorg,+114+42+Stockholm,+Sverige/@59.3339789,18.0789051,17z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5bb559edd5:0x35c4743cccabec4c!2m2!1d18.076552!2d59.33273!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5b24096139:0x3d784e22bab4355a!2m2!1d18.078389!2d59.336035!3e2

http://sl.se/sv/#/Travel/SearchTravelById/M%C3%A4lartorget%20%28Stockholm%29/Stadshuset%20%28Stockholm%29/1345/1205/2014-07-02%252008_20/depart/sv/null/null/null/null/null/null/null/null/false/null/0

Buses and trams requires prepaid tickets or travelcards.http://sl.se/en/fares--tickets/

For the harbour ferries Djurgårdsfärjan and M/S Emelie (Resselrederi) where the tickets are bought during or after boarding.

Desdichado62 ..

Your opinion please ..

We arrive 8AM on a Thursday. My current plan is to get off ship, hit the HoHo Boat (per company they start as soon as cruise ships arrive - before their normal 10am start time - true?) and go directly to Vasa. Next, take HoHoboat back to see Changing of the Guard at 1315p and then walk through Gamla Stan back to ship. I am not used to public transit (and it scares me) .... Do the HoHoboats run only in a clockwise direction??? At least this is what I am reading by looking at their map. If this is the case it will take us a long time to get to Vasa and then again over to Changing of the Guard.

If this is the case, would you suggest Vasa first and then the Changing of the Guard?? What would be the best way to get to Vasa (bus #76) and then back to Changing of the Guard??? Will we have time to see Vasa and also Changing of the Guard??

Thank you for your input ... OH and we have to be back on the ship at 1530

Debbie.

I am not Desidichado--but recently in Stockholm on the Eurodam. Yes, the HOHO Boats go in clockwise direction. The Celebrity Infinity (?) was docked near the south (?) end of Gamla Stan and the southern of the two HOHO Boat Stops. It should take about 20 minutes for the transfer to the Vasa Museum stop. We had planned to go into the VASA the afternoon of our second day, but the line was about two blocks long and it was cold, windy, and rainy as the common advice is that it is less crowded in the afternoon as the tour groups go in the morning.

It should take about another 20 minutes to get back to Gamla Stan -- get off on the second stop on Gamla Stan as it is right near the Palace.

Like PatriciaF says HoHo boats only runs in clockwise directions.

Do Vasa the first thing in the morning followed by changing of the guard and Gamla Stan.

From Vasa to Gamla Stan/Royal Palace you have several options.

HoHo boats - this is probably the slowest option. around 20-25 min.

Djurgården harbour ferry this will take about 10-15 min.+ 10 walking time.

bus #76 this will take about 10 min.

Also changing of the guards takes place at 12.15 on Mon-Sat and 13.16 on Sundays/red days.

http://www.forsvarsmakten.se/Global/Myndighetswebbplatsen/2-Var-verksamhet/hogvakten/vaktparad-med-musik-mars-december.pdf

However there should be plenty of time for what you want to see, you could spend 2,5 hours at Vasa and still have a good margin to get to the Royal Palace in time for the changing iof the guards.

I am curious, which ferry company said they will be at the cruise ship when it docks at 8:00. Our ship also arrives on a Thursday at Stadsgarden and I have read from other cruisers from past cruises saying they got a ferry as soon as they disembarked their ship to go to Vasa.

I hope to be able to do this and be flexible for our return trip over to Gamla Stan. I want to purchase single tickets for flexibility as I am only interested in just two trips, not full day trips.

you earlier wrote this?

galliegirlie For the direct water taxi from the main port area to Vasa first thing in the morning, do you have to purchase the full HoHo boat tour ticket or do they have a one time use fee?

I have been in contact with the Red Sightseeing HOHO and they state they will be at the berth early to arrive for opening of Vasa. However, I too have contacted the other company, Stromma, which also seems to own Royal Sightseeing and they stated they would be at berth at 10:00 even though I told them the ship landed at 8:00. Our cruise is in August and is in port for the same times as your ship. I would be curious to know you outcome after your visit.

Hi Acjb,

I hope you are to help me too?

I will be travelling on P&O Azura very soon and visiting Stockholm, now one of the things I want to do while I am there is pick up a pin badge from the Hard Rock Cafe as I collect them from all over the world. My questions are:-

1 How far away from the cruise terminal is it?

2 Is it in easy walking distance or would we need to get a taxi there?

The reason I ask is that I am in a wheelchair, but my mum and dad will be pushing the chair.

Your ship will dock at F638 FRIHAMNEN; http://www.stockholmshamnar.se/Hamnkarta/?harbor=Stohab&jettylocation=18.12897,59.3447

The Hard rock café is located at Sveavägen 75; https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hard+Rock+Cafe+Stockholm/@59.344088,18.054879,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x465f9d6ef73404cd:0xb546bef8baa260e8

It's not walking distance (almost 5km), especially not with for someone pushing a wheel chair.

However it is accessible by public bus, all buses are adjusted for easy use for disabled people (including wheel chairs).

You have two options regarding buses:

Either:

bus #76 (towards Norra Hammarbyhamnen) to Radiohuset or:

blue bus #1 (towards Stora Essingen) to Jungrugatan.

For both options change to blue bus #4 towards Gullmarsplan, get off at Stadsbiblioteket.

The Hard rock café is just across the street from the bus stop.

A taxi would cost around 200SEK (£20/$30) and use a taxi from either of these companies: Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir or Taxi 020.

If I could something that would be that you make a visit to Vasa before you head over to the Hardrock café.

Vasa is reached by going with bus #76 (towards Norra Hammarby hamnen) get off at Djurgårdsbron from where it is about 400m to Vasa.

From Vasa use either of these bus connections to get to the hard rock café:
