  1. Mrs Miggins remember Australian company, in your suite tucked up safely in one of the wardrobes an umbrella and two walking poles so luggage weight saved already. An American marketeer well he/she could have been British, once said ‘take care of the little things and so called big things don’t usually happen. On one of our cruises a morning training session by the on board physio was with walking poles many of us had never heard of such a thing so 6 in the class and at 7.30 - 8.00 in the morning loads of us watching from on board.
  2. Most of the scenic ships have a shallower draught the shallower the better for low water travel.
  3. Babs how do you feel crossing over a river over a bridge?
  4. Your right pontac very much the same as narrowboating in the U.K. the canals are really so shallow just stand up. If a cruise ship sinks 10 to 1 it will go straight down not turn over its physics so up to the top deck sit down and wait for a really hunky guy to rescue you. Make sure you’ve got a glass of wine! I must admit Babs I didn’t notice you were from the U.K. so the canal bit is a direct analogy from a narrow-boater of many many years.
  5. My father a Royal Navy man and a excellent swimmer tried to teach me, he failed so he took me to a pool in Portsmouth were his friends trained let’s just say that what is now the SBS failed. I was finally taught by an on holiday police inspector who made it his life’s work to teach as many as he could after failing to save a child from drowning. I wouldn’t say I was afraid just not convinced that I could actually do it. When it came time for my eldest daughter to learn because she was so nervous I realised that I had to not only put on a brave face I had to actually pretend that I liked it. I’m pleased to say that it worked actually twice as both my now really grown up girls are superb swimmers and my grandson thinks he’s a fish.
  6. We’re just back from hiring a boat on the Canal du Nivernais our vessel was an absolute pig to steer and we nearly went over a weir at one point okay so only a very small one but I must admit to closing my eyes and thinking oh can I remember how to swim’. As my fellow intrepid travelers took great delight in telling me it’s like riding a bike once learnt never forgotten.
  7. Oh poor you. I could say all the usual platitudes but remember you’ll be incredibly safe on board the ships really solid the crew are just a highly trained as on any ocean cruise ship, there’s not as many people on board. Have you ever tried a small ship like a ferry for example and can you swim? Take a few deep breaths and give it a go it’s great fun lovely people and an amazing experience. Fingers crossed you can find the inner strength to do it. Good luck.
  8. We get it tech - troubles, I’ve just spent half a day with my archive Microsoft computer deciding it wanted to upgrade and clean everything, it’s not worried that I need to answer questions about what happened a couple of hundred years ago!
  9. pontac wife there’s now way you can see that rifles uniform without hoping they’ll march
  10. Interesting as I was always given to believe that the CD on Scenic was employed directly by them and the hotel and maritime crew through an agency. Although good to hear Jade is back in the fold.
  11. Difficult decision, having just returned from France it’s not only the river cruise companies who have staffing challenges. The larger towns don’t seem to bad but places like St Omar and Auxaire fairly large places, talking to locals they have their worries. quite a few smaller shops, bistro’s, bars etc haven’t reopened and some of the villages are in a bad way no boulongera or local bars. It was noticeable but hopefully it will start improving.
  12. Ahhhhh ‘Sharp’ Bernard Cornwall has a lot to answer for.
  13. Although I would be happy to take the Oberammergau part I’m pretty sure regardless who was doing it I wouldn’t enjoy the rest of a land tour to used to sorting ourselves out around the world I suppose. Although thank you loriva for your wonderful insight, really really interesting and informative.
  14. Yes found the ice wine well actually my husband did and had to get it to compare with the German ice wines as he knows these very well. South Africa was many many years ago but those particular wines and the Canadian we seriously considered shipping some home but at the time it was prohibitively expensive we did discover the vintner in London who stocked both they specialised in difficult to find wines. Sadly we stopped doing that some years ago but by then the wines from around the world were more readily available.
  15. I bet somewhere in Holland they are producing excellent wine. Many years ago we spent an absolutely wonderful holiday in Canada well the Canadians kept really quiet about their superbly excellent wine. Plus although South Africa is known for its wine some of it on offer in tasting around Stellenbosch is so so much better.
  16. We had something similar once watch out if they send the divers down so interesting.
  17. We had both in Paris but the driver and his assistant then had to break the news that we were in a hotel for the night and not at the boat. First cruise and the de-marinisation took longer than they thought. Although still the transfer companies decision but I don’t think they wanted to loose anyone.
  18. Jimmymac613 huge no no that’s not Scenic it’s the pick up company complain bitterly to Scenic. We’ve had similar instances in various parts of the world not with Scenic the worst in Singapore at Eede when a judicious application of the backhander soerted things out but not to the happiness of the locals
