Interior Design on Solstice Class Ships...

What do you think of the interior design on the Solstice Class ships? Personally, I find much of the carpeting to be a bit garish, and there is the odd design feature that I think detracts from the overall success of the interior, such as the "circle" wall in "Blu".

I haven't seen much of the interior colour schemes on Equinox, and early pictures from the Eclipse seem to show a lot of orange, which is my least favourite colour in an interior.

What do you think of S-class interior design? What would you change?

Personally, I don't think this is a very successful colour scheme.

Working in Design and Marketing...

I still prefer the Solstice class designs over any other cruise line or ship.

I think they are appealing to the UK based clients with the Eclipse! but overall that is the Tuscan grill in the picture correct? I think it works better at night because the use of lucite and colors will be 100% different looking when lighted for night time!

thats my opinion

I love it. Overall, the S-class are the most architecturally interesting ships out there.

In all fairness, the picture you posted is not the best of that venue. However I agree about the carpet, I'm not a huge fan of the reds in it. The rest of the carpeting on board the ships, IMO, is perfect.

The interiors showcase the trends that are on the rise in popularity. Currently, any high end hotel or similar venue shows a style similar to most of what is on board the S-class, unless it is purposely trying to attain a "classic" design (like the designers have done in Micheal's Club).

However, these trends are somewhat more common in Europe than in North America, so they may seem a bit odd. For reference, look at what TUI has done with the ex Galaxy, now Mein Schiff. (I think she looks fantastic).

Overall, the S-class ships are contemporary, with some very heavy touches that evoke a masculine "yacht" feel.

I think these ships also grow on a person the more one looks at them. For example, I used to think the MDR was too devoid of color and I hated the stairs, but now I absolutely love the room. The rib columns are great, and the room is architecturally stunning.

Addressing the wall in Blu...

I actually quite like the circle wall. However, even if I didn't, there is not much I could request to be done with it, as it is a a bulkhead and therefore is structurally required. The only other option would be to have a wall that cuts the room in half completely.

gee, if this is the Tuscan grille on Solstice I can honestly say it did not appear like that at all on either of our two Solsice cruises...-- it was fairly dark & never came off as garish...actually a nice comfortable space The lighting on that photo just isn't how we saw the room at nigiht...(I actually thought that was a pic of the passport bar whihc also does not look garish!)

in the daytime in Tuscan, where they have the elite Elegant tea, the light coming in shows off the colors & glass inside very beautifully..

one decor issue is a lack of a standard decor--many diff styles from the various designers,, I prefer all the areas that are warm with beautiful wall coverings & fabrics...

& of course the buffet area to me is like a hospital zone-- cold cold cold!!!

overall S class ships are the best at sea--happy there will be many of them to enjoy over the next few yrs....

That is a horrible photo of the Tuscan Grill and it really looks much different in person.

Joanie, THAT is the Tuscan Grille?

Hi Ma Bell:

That is apparently a picture of the Tuscan Grill on the Eclipse. I haven't seen many interior pictures yet, and I don't know how true this one is to the actual colours on the Eclipse. I'm dying to see more pictures of the interiors.

I have been on the Solstice twice, and found that most of the interiors looked much better in person than they did in photos. However, I don't care much for the colour scheme in Solstice's Tuscan Grill, although I understand what it is drawing on for inspiration.

Hi Lois:

I did a really poor job of expressing myself in the original post.

I pulled this picture from an earlier thread about the Eclipse being delivered to Celebrity in Ems.

Elena,

I could not agree more with you about Tuscan Grille on Solstice. A very dreary color scheme. I like dark but it more garish and depressing. From the photo they may have taken a lighter approach on the Eclipse. I am disappointed about Celebrity adding Tuscan Grill to the Constellation, etc. We were not impressed.

we just got off the Solstice on Sunday and here is a picture in Tuscan Grill...we just loved this ship and had a fantastic time. Great food, great entertainment, great rooms(8240 and 8242--adjoining), great friendly crowd of people, great service by our waiters and cabin attendant. The only thing that we would of changed is that there were 300 kids onboard(not so nice), we got spoiled in Nov. on Jewel of the Seas when their were only 40 kids onboard!!! We chose this cruise because we thought there were going to be less kids on Celebrity ships. Just did not know that it was the last week of spring break!! This was my best cruise thus far--what ship will be next???? I am looking for another cruise already! Any ideas anyone????

Hi Marinearchit:

I always love to read your posts.

Have you seen many pictures of the interior of the Eclipse yet? If you have anything you could post, I would love to see them.

Interior design is much like anything else...so much is in the eye of the beholder. When we look at colour, we're not even sure if we are seeing what everyone else is seeing, but I think it is a fun topic to talk about at a theoretical level, especially over a glass of wine :).

With respect to that perforated bulkhead wall in Blu, I understand the structural requirements, but my own opinion is that it is not particularly harmonious with the rest of the design ethic in the room, but that's just me. Overall I love "Blu" and am wondering if it will be any different on the Eclipse.

I think they have done a good job with Mein Schiff as well (except for the green and orange carpet). It looks fresh and well-coordinated. If anything, it is not quite as "upscale" as Solstice.

I keep up with international design trends, particularly in the commercial, hotel and other hospitality fields. But on the Solstice ships there are odd little "bumps" that leave me furrowing my brow.

On the whole I enjoy the Solstice class ships very much, but I could live with a little more cohesion. Sometimes it seems to me that someone very talented began the interior design, and someone a little less talented finished up.

As far as posterity is concerned, every decade of design has its hits and misses. True excellence in design is timeless. Can you say "Barcelona Chair"?

On Solstice ships to date, we have WAY more winners than losers. But I still think that the interior design on these new ships is fun to discuss.

We love the S Class interiors .These are the best ships we have ever sailed for the food ,service ,entertainment & abiance . The only thing I brought to the hotel managers attention was the non sliding dining room barrel style chairs & that it would help a great deal to place glides on each foot of those chairs . I was feeling so bad for the waiters & assistant waiters having to push those heavy chairs in under people to seat .

The color scheme of the Tuscan Grille is different on each Solstice class ship, but the Mediterranean theme is the same. The colors on the Solstice are dark and monotone overall, which makes it very somber at night, IMO. Whereas the colors on the Equinox are bright and cheerful. Note the similarity of the Tuscan Grille on Equinox to that on Eclipse, same patterns (except for the carpet) just different colors.

What do you think of S-class interior design? What would you change?

I love the modern interior design of Solstice. In fact, Solstice is my favorite ship, visually. The staterooms are my favorite. I think the color scheme is very modern and comfortable.

The only thing I would change is the main dining room. I prefer darker colors, so all the white and silver doesn't appeal to me.

I concur, while I generally loved the decor of the Solstice; I was just not impressed with the MDR -- the colors and shiney surfaces made it feel almost institutional and all the dividers, while they cut down on noise, really ruined any possible "wow" factor.

PS - someone else indicated that they felt the S-class are among the most archetectually intresting ships on the sea (paraphrasing a lot, sorry if I misreprented!). While I really really like the S-class, I determined one of the reasons I do like S-class is that they are reminiscent of the Radiance class on RCCI -- which may well be the most thoughtfully designed ship out there.

The multple deck atrium area, the wide expanse of windows along the aft in the one nightclub/bar area, the ease of movement between different public areas, and the wonderful use of art throughout.

if you see it (Tuscan on Solstice) in the daylight it is lovely--great play of colors-- agree that it looks drab at night-

did not realize the original photo was eclipse so I can;'t comment on that..

Frankly, while we very much enjoyed Blu and the other specialty restaurants in the Equinox, my wife and I found the interior decoration elsewhere to be rather austere, and less luxurious than the Millennium and Summit's interiors.

No, haven't seen that many pictures of the Eclipse's interiors. However, it appears the color scheme is not just orange, but greens, reds, browns, oranges, etc. I rather like it, but I'm hesitant to see what the Sky Observation Lounge will look like...

Indeed, more orange.

solarium_pr_sm.jpg

Also, the casino appears to have swapped the purple and yellow color scheme in lieu of a red and yellow one.

4429.jpg

I haven't had any firsthand experience with the class like you have, but I understand what you mean about the somewhat disrupted design flow. The most prominent example I can think of is the Ensemble Lounge, which seems like a quick transition from light and modern to dark and ornate.

Blue does indeed look a bit different. It's a lot less...blue:rolleyes:.

s677_blu_restaurant_pr_dsc2520.jpg

The wall colors seem to be different. New chairs. I think it looks much more 60s. I like it, but I think it has moved away from the more "clean" feel of the Blu restaurants on Solstice and Equinox.

There may be some further changes on Silhouette and S-class 5, as they are supposedly altered somewhat from the original design.

I can say that, from what I've seen, the MDR on Eclipse is the best of the three. The chairs have a slight bit of color added and the carpet is great.

4435.jpg

As with timeless design, I really do hope that the S-class holds out well. As you stated, the Barcelona Chair is a perfect example!

As for Mein Schiff, I love what they have done to what used to be the Rendezvous lounge. It's clean, bright, and streamlined. However, the bar area is a bit too dark IMO.

I agree, these ships are fun to discuss. Also, I'm extremely thankful that there are finally some ships to discuss for architectural and design reasons, aside from being "the biggest."

From what I have concluded, it appears that Eclipse will be the most aesthetic "hit or miss" for people.

truthfully, I'm not really loving the interiors of eclipse yet. I appreciate that they're updating the look of the s-class as they go along, but at the same time, I'm not that into the changes they've made. The bright orange in the solarium is kind of garish for such a purportedly relaxing area IMHO. Marinearchit, thanks for posting that pic of Blu., I hadn't seen it yet. It certainly is a lot less blue! I'm guessing the Sky lounge will have a lot of reds and oranges as well, but if they continue using whites up there it may balance out the bright colors.

One thing I really wish they had done is switched up the MDR design a bit. I found the dining room absolutely stunning on solstice, but it lost some of that effect on equinox because it's just so similar.

From the posted picture, I can see that they've changed the carpet and it looks like there's some blue/purple accents on the windows, but it's not enough difference to be noticeable. I miss the M-class where all of the MDRs were unique in their own way.
