Istanbul would be our choice. We spent 6 days in Istanbul before our cruise. Took the bus everywhere. Food is good, people are friendly and helpful. There is a Marriott Hotel very close to Galaport. Athens is farther from the Piraeus port, so that was our initial thought. But we found that we enjoyed our time in Istanbul much better.

Thanks grmmybtty; that's very helpful, and that's an excellent location for a shuttle, as the top of the tower can apparently be seen from long distance!  And several things of interest to me aren't far. I looked on a map and there is a park called Jardim da Cordoaria near the tower (church). So I'll (tentatively) plan on taking the shuttle in for sightseeing on my own.

 

If you happen to have gone to Vilagarcia (port for Santiago de Compostela) or Portimao, and have any info on shuttles, I'd love to hear about them!  And Gijon and Santander in Spain.

Unfortunately we used a different port for Santiago de Compostela and the ship missed Portimao because of rough seas. There was a shuttle to town in Gijon, but we took a tour so don't now where the drop off was.

The Marina stops in Guayaquil, Ecuador in March.  A google search tells me cruise ships will provide complimentary transfer via ship tenders to Malecon 2000, the revitalized boardwalk area along the city center.  Can anybody confirm that Oceania does this?

I haven't been there, so can't confirm.  But it sounds likely to be true, assuming there's a dock/wharf there. And it's been my experience that all cruise lines usually use the same place for tendering.  In trying to determine where a tender drops passengers, I've been know to ask on Trip Advisor boards if anyone knows, or ask in Ports of Call section of Cruise Critic, or look at vendor descriptions of tours to see if there are clues (or ask a vendor if they meet to a place to which a cruise ship might take passengers by tender.  Or possibly the What's in Port or Cruise Crocodile sites may have more info, or asking the Guayaquil tourism department MAY know.  But I don't know if What's in Port or Cruise Crocodile cover South America as well as they do Europe.  Or a Facebook "fan" page might possibly get a response, though I haven't seen as much on SA cruises compared to European or Caribbean cruises. Just make sure people understand you're looking for tender drop location (or any kind of shuttle from there to somewhere else), not just the fact that the port is (apparently) usually a tender port.

I don't think so.  Amalfi and Positano are different towns but close together.  If Oceania suspects or knows it will tender, there is an anchor symbol next to a port on the itinerary.  I assume they do that on their website, but I don't remember for suere.  But when you book, and get your guest statement, it has a page for the itinerary.  You'll see an anchor there.   I said when Oceania "suspects or knows" there will be tendering because occasionally it's assumed tendering will be needed in a port, but things can change.  If there's nobody in the port on that day, and there's an appropriately sized berth for a particular cruise ship, the cruise ship may end up docking.  The assignments are made by the port authority, not the cruise line.  Of course, some ports don't have berths long enough or deep enough to allow cruise ships to dock.  If that's the case, you'll definitely tender.  There's obviously some uncertainty involved, but sometimes things change for the better. And a lot can change.  Itineraries are made up quite a while in advance, without regard to every little detail (for example, ferry schedules in a port).  For our next cruise (April) the itinerary calls for tendering in the Spanish port of Santander.   But this summer/fall I "watched" on Marine Traffic a number of ships, including Marina, pull up at a dock there.  And one day there were two ships there. So I'm assuming we'll actually dock unless there are a lot of ships on the day we're there and we need to tender.  Some people get really concerned about tendering/missing ports, and some people don't like doing it.  But to me it's really not all that bad a thing.  And at least Oceania gets the independent souls off the ship fairly quickly, which is good.

 

As for a situation in which you see something like "Biarritz (Saint-Jean-de-Luz)" the first name is the tourist area and the name in parens is the actual port city.  Usually the tenders are short and you're taken to a good location ashore. But in a case like "Seville (Cadiz)" you actually dock in Cadiz, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive or train/bus ride from Seville.  Of course, if your itinerary says simply "Seville" you will cruise to Seville.  The smaller O ships can do that.  And they can go down the river to Bordeaux.  

 

But as for Amalfi/Positano, I've been there, but I forget if we tendered (probably) or not, and exactly where we were dropped off if tendered.  But I believe with those 2 cities, once at one, you can get to the other by boat.

I just looked back at my pictures at https://pbase.com/roothy123/italy_greece_malta&page=all  I didn't note whether we tendered or docked, just that we explored Amalfi a little and then took a public bus down to Positano and back.  The What's in Port site might tell you if Amalfi has a port.  But I don't remember one.

1) Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line's private island. There is no cruise ship dock and you have to go ashore by tender boats.

 

4) I have been to Messina on another cruise line but not Oceania. Don't think there will be shuttle since the cruise pier is just in front of the city centre.

Great info.  May want to add a couple notes to the last list you can find (yes, list can be edited!) and then copy and paste to post a new list here. There's no real list owner who automatically updates the list.  So it's much better if people edit and update so others don't have to hunt around a lot.  

 

I think it's safe to list Messina as something like "dock in front of city centre, no shuttle needed."  Of course, it the berth(s) are full, a ship may have to tender and may drop somewhere else.  But that really applies to a lot of lines/ships/occasions, so ALL of the info on this thread must be taken as subject to be different on any given cruise.  

 

As for Great Stirrup Cay, I'm not sure how to reflect it!

Yes, boat or bus. Not sure of timing of each, however, and this was a while ago (started cruising O on 2004!)   And with the bus we apparently got off above Positano, and walked down.  But maybe the boat will take you closer.

While I've yet to travel there on Oceania, I have had land-based trips to Amalfi many times and visiting ships always anchor offshore and tender into Amalfi.  The pier there is both sized for and busy with ferries.  Amalfi town has ferry connections to Positano and south to Maiori, Minori, Vietri Sul Mare and Salerno during tourist season.  It is also the hub for buses that run up and down the coast as well as up to Ravello and over to Bomerano (for the Path of the Gods).

I don't know for sure.  But someone on a cruise this past summer/fall reported on a Facebook group page that for Sirena there was a shuttle to the Ensanche area of Bilbao, maybe 20-25 minutes away from the port.  (Port is in Getxo greater suburban area, at least 20 minutes' drive from Bilbao.)  The person who posted didn't know a specific location.  However, I know from researching Bilbao a little that Ensanche is the "expansion" new part of Bilbao that includes quite a few places of interest to tourists other than Casa Viega area (Old Town) which is just across the river.  Here's a good link:THE ENSANCHE AREA OF BILBAO - Bilbao Turismo (try Control & click  to access). Guesses as to location on my part are: around Plaza Euskadi (west, I believe, and convenient to Guggenheim, at least one museum, and HoHo bus) or Plaza Circular (east? near train station with easy walk to Old Town) or somewhere in between! 

 

I think it's unlikely the shuttle will be running if you're embarking/disembarking there, as Oceania normally doesn't pay for shuttles on those days. However, I suppose it's possible the port or city may run one on those days.

We are currently on insignia’s world cruise 2023. We have finished over 6 weeks and, as yet, have not had a single Oceania paid shuttle in any port. 
 

Could someone kindly confirm that they have had Oceania paid shuttles recently (not port shuttles to the gate or city provided shuttles to a town center or shopping area)  in a port. 
 

For us, this is a vital part of a world cruise for passengers who either have already seen the port, don’t wish an excursion or are mobility challenged. We are very disappointed to not have shuttles which have always been a selling point of Oceania. 
 

Please note that the list above does not differentiate between Ocean paid shuttles vs city/port operated shuttles.

Could someone kindly confirm that they have had Oceania paid shuttles recently (not port shuttles to the gate or city provided shuttles to a town center or shopping area)  in a port. 
 

 

I think most of the shuttles to town are by the port

Not sure what you mean by Oceania Paid   I am sure Oceania has to pay a fee for the service  in not working ports

Well, I haven't been to many of the World Cruise ports except some in Europe and a few scattered throughout the Caribbean, South America, Australia and New Zealand.  So I don't know how that cruise is and can't confirm that shuttles are currently running.  But on my May cruise in Europe they were plenty of shuttles. However, it's possible some people don't realize that if the port is some distance to the city you want to visit (Berlin, Rome, Venice, Seville come to mind) there will probably not be a shuttle. In those cases, Oceania may offer a transport excursion in which you pay for transport and sightsee on your own.  And if it's turnaround day (when people embark or disembark their cruise) there probably won't be a shuttle.  Plus, on this thread, it appears a few people have reported a shuttle in a city, but it's just a shuttle inside the port, or to the area right outside the port.  To me, that's not what this list is for.  So I always look for info on schedules but make a backup plan. 

  

As for who pays or what the correct terminology should have been, yes, Oceania probably paid a fee rather than paid a port or city for each passenger.  I've been in a couple ports in which two separate shuttles were running from the port for different cruise lines.  One bus was marked for Oceania and the other for the other cruise line, and passengers needed to purchase a ticket.

[a few updates from our Feb 2023 Nautica Bangkok-to-Singapore - note that in Sihanoukville and Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon there were very good local shuttle bus teams, matching polo's and a team member at each shuttle stop so even if the bus wasn't there you knew you were in the right spot]

For Salerno, there was no shuttle in August of 2022. Nautica was at the 'Porto Touristico' dock, there is a terminal with a cafe but there was *not* a taxi stand, we ended up calling a local taxi service RadioTaxi Salerno
