Karlie1 Posted February 25, 2012 #1 Share Posted February 25, 2012 I was watching Port Everglades live web cam this morning, I counted the ships(7). I started wondering about Taxi's to Airport. I have never sailed out of FLL only Miami. In Dec, Miami had 4 ships and seemed to be enough taxi's. 7 ships would be 14,000 - 20,000 people getting off at same time. Planning a trip this fall out of Evergades, I always fly in a day ahead but fly out the day we arrive back. Just wondering about ride to airport. They make a constant loop between cruiseport and airport (or hotels). As you get off the ship there will be an area for people wanting taxis and the taxis will come one after the other. If you are going to the airport it's about $15.00 - $20.00 and takes less than 10 mins. We have found it to be very well organized.
paul929207 Posted February 25, 2012 #3 Share Posted February 25, 2012 I believe the busiest day in FLL was about 28,000 passengers. So 14,000 to 20,000 should not be a problem
Karlie1 Posted February 25, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted February 25, 2012 Thanks, just wandering. There must be a BUNCH of taxis in FLL.
fishywood Posted February 25, 2012 #5 Share Posted February 25, 2012 There will be well over 20,000 passengers today. The two largest ships alone (Behemoth of the Seas and Crown Princess) account for 9,500+ when considering third and fourth berths--which will be nearly all sold this time of year. isujim Posted February 25, 2012 #6 Share Posted February 25, 2012 Plenty of taxi's........they just continue to make continuous loops from the airport to the cruise pier. Never had a problem getting one.
sail7seas Posted February 25, 2012 #7 Share Posted February 25, 2012 We've been in Port Everglades with as many as 10 or 11 ships and had no issue getting a taxi. They know the port schedules for cruise ships and they provide taxi service accordingly.
cb at sea Posted February 25, 2012 #8 Share Posted February 25, 2012 Not EVERYONE will need a cab...some will have their own cars, and a bunch of folks will opt for the cruise shuttle buses....the cabs pick up, drop off , and come back! Repeat as needed!
traveler916 Posted February 26, 2012 #9 Share Posted February 26, 2012 The two largest ships alone (Behemoth of the Seas) LOL - That was a good one...somehow I don't think RCI is planning on calling one of them by that name
DanJ Posted February 26, 2012 #10 Share Posted February 26, 2012 March 17 and 18 will both have much higher loads than today. When you look at the passenger count on cruisett, today is only slightly higher than an average weekend day. We disembarked on one of their busiest days last winter (Jan 15, 2011) and there wasn't any issue with taxis.
dolittle Posted February 26, 2012 #11 Share Posted February 26, 2012 The airport is very close to the port so each trip is pretty short
mapsmith Posted February 26, 2012 #12 Share Posted February 26, 2012 And the cab drivers make their living making sure that the cabs are always full. They will not leave anyone behind if it means a possible fare.
Putterdude Posted February 26, 2012 #13 Share Posted February 26, 2012 We were there on January 28th when I counted 8 ships but was told that there were 11 ships in....and there was not problem as long as you didn't need a van cab....which we did. We cruised out of Port Canaveral last year, having flown into Oakland....and when we went to hire a car service, were told that since we had 5 suitcases (I think) we needed to have a minivan or stretch limo pr something like that...Maybe I have the details wrong but I know we couldn't get an "ordinary town car" to take us. We wound up in a Yukon SUV or something similar.

Rare Hlitner Posted February 26, 2012 #16 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Never had a problem getting a taxi at Port Everglades. 7 ships on a weekend are not at all unusual but many of the taxis are simply doing fast loops over to the airport so the taxi queue never seems to end. compozer Posted February 26, 2012 #17 Share Posted February 26, 2012 The only time it has been slow for us ( and this was going to port not leaving) was on December 23 (I'm sure the 24th was worse) BUT it only took an extra 15 minutes longer and cost $5 more. It seemed longer sitting in traffic but it is so close. We have never been there with less than 7 ships in port.
jdvmd Posted February 26, 2012 #18 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Plenty of taxis will be available. Not all of the people disembarking are going to be by taxis. A lot will have driven or will be taking the ship's transport (waste of time and money).
