maxmia Posted April 13, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2012 Just completed 14 days on the Volendam, Auckland to Sydney. On two separate evenings the Frans Hal lounge screened movies instead of having a show. We always look forward to the entertainment, and were very disappointed at this change of style. Cost cutting perhaps?. This was our 8th cruise, 3rd with Hal, and have never experienced this before, even on a 23 day crossing LA to Sydney, there was a show on every night. Anyone else had this experience?
janmcn Posted April 13, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2012 Possibility that the entertainers were delayed in their getting to where they needed to to board. We've had entertainers miss the ship before.
Krazy Kruizers Posted April 13, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 13, 2012 We have also had entertainers miss the ship. On evenings when we were a long time in a port -- like to 10 and 11 PM -- we did have movies shown in the Show Lounge. Were those evenings long nights in a port? Just remembered that on our first segment of cruises on the Maasdam we had the lead singer get sick next to the last night of the cruise -- the production show was cancelled and the HAL Cats performed. The lead singer was also sick the final -- so the production show was cancelled again. Don't remember what they did have as we didn't go to the lounge. OVgirl Posted April 13, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 13, 2012 On our last cruise they showed a movie on the nights of the crew shows.
aliaschief Posted April 13, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 13, 2012 Just curious. Did you inquire to any authority onboard why there was no entertainment?

bcd2010 Posted April 13, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 13, 2012 On our last cruise they showed a movie on the nights of the crew shows. Same here I last month) - probably a cost cutting measure because I do remember there being "regular" shows before the crew shows on those nights. PathfinderEss Posted April 13, 2012 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2012 We've been on board several cruises where the entertainment missed the ship. Not much can be done about that, it happens, just like some passengers miss the ship too.
Rare erewhon Posted April 13, 2012 #9 Share Posted April 13, 2012 Was the entertainment cancelled due to rough seas?
Rare kazu Posted April 13, 2012 #10 Share Posted April 13, 2012 On several of our cruises this has not been uncommon. It`s usually either a long port day or a crew show night. Has not been a big deal to us as the timing is always perfect. it`s nothing new - has happened to us at least on the last three cruises, if not more. but those have been 20 days;)
maxmia Posted April 14, 2012 Author #11 Share Posted April 14, 2012 Was the entertainment cancelled due to rough seas? We had smooth seas, and 8 port days, the movies were on a crew show night, and a 8am to 5.30pm port day. We are not always crazy about the guest artists, but its part of the cruise experience to have the option IMHO. We were also wondering how often they change the production shows?. We had seen the same shows with different artists, on the previous Volendam cruise in September 2011.
Rare erewhon Posted April 14, 2012 #12 Share Posted April 14, 2012 Thanks for your reply. Did you enquire at the front desk, why no entertainment? You were lucky to have smooth seas.

We have had movies for years on the evening that the crew have their shows. That is not new. It costs a pretty penny to get a production show put together -- thus they aren't changed for about 5 years. We have also had the same shows on many of our cruises. We just find something else to do that evening if we don;t want to see the show again and again. We have even gone to a show thinking that it was new only to discover that the title of the show was changed and a couple of the songs were changed -- but otherwise -- it was the same show we had seen before. We had the same thing happen on Princess when we used to sail on them -- same shows -- same entertaint. We had one comedian that we saw from ship to ship. DFD1 Posted April 14, 2012 #14 Share Posted April 14, 2012 After some of the shows we've seen over the years, a good movie would be a welcome change....LOL Anyway, I hope you had a good cruise otherwise.
pictonite Posted April 14, 2012 #15 Share Posted April 14, 2012 We were on the Volendam in February/March for a 28 day cruise. We had a movie shown once on that cruise. Every other evening was a show of some kind. I have to think your movie nights were because of entertainers not making it to the ship. We had many guest entertainers on this cruise, who embarked and disembarked at rather strange places, and told us that they were heading for another ship! Infi Posted April 14, 2012 #16 Share Posted April 14, 2012 One movie night on a long cruise is not that big of a deal, IMHO. I think we had one or two movie nights on our transatlantic last fall, which was perfectly understandable given the long stretch of sea days and no opportunity to board new entertainment. Have also experienced the movie before the crew show nights on the shorter Caribbean cruises too.

We had a wonderful cruise as always, could not get a seat at the piano bar very often, very popular spot. Gave our donation at the Casino, and just chilled out most of the time. Volendam is a great ship!.:)
AlanAllyn Posted April 16, 2012 #20 Share Posted April 16, 2012 We got off the Maasdam this morning. The piano bar was standing room only most nights with Barry from Boston.
