wwcruisers Posted October 15, 2012 #76 Share Posted October 15, 2012 that's disappointing - I was hoping for a major refit before we take our first cruise on her in August 2013 :( I agree! They've already changed out the cloudy windows in the Horizons Lounge, and they could probably replace the carpet, while at sea. But SO much more needs to be done! This news does not make me optimistic about the Grand Old Lady's future in the X fleet. :(
c-legs Posted October 15, 2012 #77 Share Posted October 15, 2012 So all of the clear days in Spring 2013 that we (you) had her able to go to Victoria (Esquimalt) have now been filled with "Sailing Dates" ? :( Yes indeed....ALL of them. C

elena7seas Posted October 16, 2012 #79 Share Posted October 16, 2012 HelloWas there liquid soap and shampoo/conditoner in the shower? Hi Jeanneful: I just got off the Century on October 5th. I sailed solo in an inside cabin. There was shampoo, separate conditioner and body lotion. No liquid soap or shower gel, but good-sized bars of soap in the shower and at the sink. The soap was of decent quality. I'm wondering if they have changed the formula for the conditioner, or perhaps the composition of my hair has changed :o. I have shoulder-length hair, fairly fine and fairly thick, and it is colour-treated. Although I have never had problem with Celebrity's conditioner before, it just didn't do the job for me this cruise, and I had to spend a lot of time combing the tangles out of my hair after every shower, which is SUCH a pain. Putterdude Posted October 16, 2012 #80 Share Posted October 16, 2012 While no expert on the Century, we did back away from booking a 2014 Panama Canal transit because of her age. I did at the time pause and wonder what effect the enlarged canal will have on the cruise line business when it opens in 2014....this of course would dovetail well with the Century's rumored departure from the fleet. I did at the time pause and wonder what effect the enlarged canal will have on the cruise line business when it opens in 2014....this of course would dovetail well with the Century's rumored departure from the fleet. The new canal is substantially bigger than the old ones. At 1200 feet long, 167 feet wide and almost 50 foot draft even Solstice Class ships can pass through. Royal's Freedom class and Oasis class won't fit. Their maximum width at the level of the bridge wings is 226 feet for the Oasis and Allure of the Seas and 184 feet for the Freedom class ships. One of the limiting factors is the Bridge of the Americas which has 201 feet of clearance at high water... exactly the height of Solstice class ships. (Gulp) Here are some ship heights I found on the web: Voyager of the Seas - 208' Oasis of the Seas - 236' Celebrity Solstice - 200' Grand Princess - 188' Queen Mary 2 - 203' Millennium-class 180' Carnival Dream 203' Carnival Destiny 195' Caribbean Princess-class 213' Freedom of the Seas 209' So depending on how brave Celebrity is on the bridge, there may be little change to what ships can really use the new larger canal. Putterdude Posted October 16, 2012 #82 Share Posted October 16, 2012 You have obviously done your homework and it is very enlightening, quite frankly I wasn't thinking of the bridge. However, I was thinking more in terms of an M class ship being available for this itinerary with the introduction of the Reflection.

They already use the Millie and Infinity on Panama runs as well as the Century... The Constellation could be moved from Europe but the Summit is as big as they'll let into Bermuda I think... Rare Azulann Posted October 16, 2012 #84 Share Posted October 16, 2012 The current canal will remain in operation even after the larger canal is completed. So a lot more ships will be using both canals.

Correct. BTW, I just saw that the new NCL Breakaway at 144,000 tons will be sailing to Bermuda starting next year.... so maybe the powers in Bermuda are increasing ship sizes and capacity. Could a Solstice Class ship be in the mix in the future?

Could a Solstice Class ship be in the mix in the future? I've been asking that question for weeks, seems celebrity may have the need to compete with a brand new ship, the Breakaway. Problem in Bermuda in the past has not been ship size but number of people in port, they have always made an attempt to control the numbers. Blue46 Posted November 7, 2012 #87 Share Posted November 7, 2012 Wanted to let everyone know that we just got off a Hawaiian Cruise on the Century. At our Cruise Critic get together we asked the Captain about the rumour about the Century possibly being sold. He told us that as of right now there are absolutely no plans to sell the Century. He said the dry dock was being rescheduled because the upgrade plans have not been finalized. Hopefully this is true as it was a wonderful crew and one of the best we have been on. Despegue Posted November 7, 2012 #89 Share Posted November 7, 2012 No employee of Celebrity will confirm a sale untill publicly announced. The ship has a full schedule and bookings may take a big hit if such a sale is mentioned as a possibility. Like any company, management is keeping all options open, and a lookout for interested buying parties is one of these options. Perfectly normal and no need to pannick. Just to let you all know, as we just got off of the Infinity today, having completed the Panama Canal from San Diego to Ft. Lauderdale, that our Panama expert told us that the Bridge of the Americas will stay, but the first bridge from the Pedro Mederos locks will be demolished, and a new, and much higher bridge will take place. As I just arrived home today, after many hours of flight, I wish I could remember the name.....starts with a C as I remember, Centennial?? maybe, but anyway, a new one will be built in it's place.:) Rick

True, that's why I said ship size and capacity as larger ships have far greater numbers of passengers onboard.... in any case NCL and Celebrity both berth at Kings Warf at the same time and the new NCL ship will be there when the Summit is... so they've either never reached the max or Bermuda has up'd the numbers allowed to visit. Actually the 201' clearance of the Bridge of Americas is not as dire as it sounds, spring tides at the Pacific entrance to the Canal can have a range of 20'. Most days however the tidal range is in the 15'-17' range while neap tides are only about 9'. That gives a lot more clearance on most days that you can work with by adding to those dimensions to the 201'... just don't be late for low tide:eek:. Considering that a lot of ships such as the Oasis, Freedom etc. had clear The Great Belt Bridge to be delivered which only has a navigational clearance of a little over 213'. I imagine that if any of the cruise lines want to use the new improved locks they could make themselves fit. The newest of the bridges over the Canal is the Centennial Bridge which crosses the Canal just north of Pedro Miguel Locks in Gaillard Cut, has a clearance of 262' which should take care of most anything that is on the books or presently afloat. The new locks will be 1400' by 180' and in the beginning the size of the ship that will be accepted will be 1200x160. I would think after they get more familiar with handling the larger ships that limit would increase. Many times the beam figure is the widest part of the ship regardless of where it is, for example the bridge wings. A ship such as the Oasis is "only" 154' in beam at the water line, as long as the extreme dimensions are sufficiently high enough above the water line there should not be a problem. Despegue Posted November 8, 2012 #95 Share Posted November 8, 2012 Just a little patriotic note: The design and part of the construction of the new locks is made by Belgian engineering and construction company Besix, also partly responsible for the currently tallest skyscraper, Burj Khaliffa in Dubai.:)

The Oresund bridge between Sweden and Denmark is listed in Wikipedia as having only 187ft clearance below it, but Oasis and Allure safely navigated under it as they left the Baltic after launch. I think I read somewhere that a ships height above the water is dependant on the its speed, the faster she goes the lower in the water she sits. So maybe the above list will not be as limiting as it looks.

rubrrick Posted November 9, 2012 #100 Share Posted November 9, 2012 Very true! :) Has there been any rumors at all that Millennium could be for sale? Seems to have been listed as for sale since January. When was the Millennium built? We just got off of the Infinity, and I have to tell that the outside of our cabin was filled with rust and disrepair. Hearing the sound of chipping hammers on sea days, I believe that the ship is continuously being upgraded. As we deparded, there were two semi trucks backing down, both having carpeting...........and all of the carpeting aboard looked good. I'm not sure whether the Infinity came first, or the Millennium. But I will tell everyone that the RS on the M class does not stand up to the RS on the old Century Class. Rick
