Jiffymom Posted November 2, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 2, 2012 What do men do? Will a snorkel mask seal with a mustache.
critterchick Posted November 2, 2012 #2 Share Posted November 2, 2012 It does for DH most of the time. I'm recalling that one tour operator suggested that he use some Vaseline or Chapstick to help, but I don't think that he did.
cruisinck Posted November 2, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 2, 2012 My husband uses vaseline and it works great for him.
jennmaybe Posted November 2, 2012 #4 Share Posted November 2, 2012 Mu hubby actually has to trim his back some right before we leave for the cruise. I didn't know about the Vaseline trick though. I will have to share that with him and see if it works.

reallyitsmema Posted November 2, 2012 #6 Share Posted November 2, 2012 What do men do? Will a snorkel mask seal with a mustache. Mine tried to use vaseline but it didn't work well for him. I think if he had trimmed his mustache before snorkeling, it would have helped.

matj2000 Posted November 2, 2012 #8 Share Posted November 2, 2012 Shave it off. The mustache and/or goatee is a bad look on 90% of men anyway..
sherilyn70 Posted November 2, 2012 #9 Share Posted November 2, 2012 My husband had problems with it... wish we'd known about the vaseline at the time. It was our first snorkeling experience and he had to stay on the boat while I went out with everyone else.
merlin5353 Posted November 2, 2012 #10 Share Posted November 2, 2012 I SCUBA dive and also have a mustache. I just trim a bit under my nose and use some vaseline. BTW my DW loves my mustache & beard. mjldvlks Posted November 2, 2012 #11 Share Posted November 2, 2012 My husband uses vaseline and it works great for him. It has been long enough since I have been diving that I cannot remember if I had a mustache at the time or not. I know there were times in those days that I did. I also know that my diving instructors would have had a cow about getting vaseline or any other petroleum products anywhere near the rubber or vinyl parts of dive gear. I know I have always heard that rubber and vaseline are a bad combination. Below is a dive forum where they discuss this issue. Many suggest using silicone grease instead. I offer it only as a source of information -- my experience is way too old to be of much value: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-65897.html
dappledumpling Posted November 2, 2012 #12 Share Posted November 2, 2012 agree with above trim it up a little and vaseline.. works well I prefer to shave before hand but my DW thinks I look better with a stache..

Rare orville99 Posted November 2, 2012 #14 Share Posted November 2, 2012 Been snorkling with my 'stache for more than 20 years - you just have to get the right type of mask. Besides, there's no way I would ever shave it off again. DW says kissing me without my stache is like eating an egg without salt:D
Rare orville99 Posted November 2, 2012 #15 Share Posted November 2, 2012 Shave it off. The mustache and/or goatee is a bad look on 90% of men anyway.. And spiked hair on anyone older than 10 looks rediculous on 100% of men:rolleyes:
mark290 Posted November 2, 2012 #16 Share Posted November 2, 2012 Shave it off. The mustache and/or goatee is a bad look on 90% of men anyway.. Finally a post from this dude I agree with. 90% of the time they are trying to cover up something and it just makes it look worse. Nothing wrong with a full face but facial hair does not make it less full.

cruiseguy1016 Posted November 3, 2012 #22 Share Posted November 3, 2012 Mine tried to use vaseline but it didn't work well for him. I think if he had trimmed his mustache before snorkeling, it would have helped. Trimming it can be bad. Long hairs can lay flat and seal with the help of Vaseline. Short hairs are stiff and won't lay flat. I'm speaking from experience, I'm a SCUBA diver. I use vaseline, it works great.

He swims but didn't like it if there were any swells at all though my son loved it. Going to have my son take over convincing his Dad and I will just see what happens. Next time we are going to book a private excursion on a small boat and hopefully that will make a difference.
DirtyDawg Posted November 3, 2012 #24 Share Posted November 3, 2012 Shave it off. The mustache and/or goatee is a bad look on 90% of men anyway.. WOW! I learned two great things today: 1) Use Vaseline with my mask to prevent leaks, :)and 2) 90% chance that Matj2000 doesn't like my goatee. I guess he won't like my hairy chest either.:o
Zubsin Posted November 3, 2012 #25 Share Posted November 3, 2012 My DH trims his away from under is nose slightly he found that more effective than vaseline. Actually, a captain on one of our excursions recommended the trim thing.
