A bit disappointed with the Dawn...

Hey folks... just came back from Thanksgiving week on the Dawn.

First of all.. a HUGE thank you to all the CC members and their reviews, suggestions and helpful hints. The good things on our trip happened as a result of the information and guidance received here! :)

This was my 7th cruise (1st time on NCL) and my husband's 1st cruise ever. Let's just say I was very underwhelmed by our experience on the Dawn. False expectations comparing to RCCL or Carnival? I don't know.

We arrived in Tampa on Saturday and stayed at the Chase Suites Hotel in Rocky Point. Clean, friendly hotel with very nice rooms. Shuttle to the port was quick and painless. Checking in wasn't too bad. Very short wait. We did however, get there kind of early but it seemed pretty steady with people arriving.

Arrival on the ship was a bit awkward in my opinion. Felt like I was in a herd of cattle moving through the plexiglass maze/walkway to get onboard. Through suggestions of CC members, we headed straight to the Venetian for lunch. There were only a few other groups in there. Our waitress Athena was an absolute dream. Greeting us by name after we sat down to eat really impressed my husband; however, that was the ONLY time on the trip that we were personally addressed, which I thought was strange. Anyway, I had the fish & chips (delicious) and my husband had the burger. Blueberry cheesecake for me and chocolate mousse for him set our arrival at a high point. We were in cabin 8020 forward balcony, which turned out to be a hull cabin. (Made absolutely no difference to us). We met our cabin steward Xavierito and requested a few items we needed... bathrobes, ice, the fridge contents removed, etc. He was quick to accommodate. We went to the Serenity Deck to watch the passing under the Tampa Bridge...always exciting to see.

Unfortunately, things started to go a bit downhill from here, starting with dinner the first night in Aqua. We arrived and were told that there would be about a 15min wait. We had no problem with that at all. I know with Freestyle Dining there are peak times and we were prepared for a much longer wait. They actually seated us in about 5 minutes. We were given our menus and we waited.... and waited.... and waited before we were even acknowledged by our waiter, and that was him telling us he'd be with us soon. A busboy finally came by and gave us water and a basket of bread. We checked the time and it had been a FULL 15 minutes before our order was taken. 10 more minutes later we were offered more bread as everyone else around us (that came in after us) were happily enjoying their appetizers and some even entrees at that point. We were given our salads... finished those, water was never refilled and waiter just kept passing us by. We decided that we were just going to get up and go to the buffet. Our busboy chased us down apologizing and called the Maitre d over. We told him the problem, he apologized profusely, the whole time our busboy was nodding his head in agreeing with what we were saying. He asked for our cabin number. We thought maybe he'd send something but we never contacted regarding this issue. I REALLY understand that Freestyle Dining is a little different and I REALLY am not a complainer; however, I've NEVER been ignored like that in any dining venue on any ship. It's always been my experience that the waiters and busboys were quick and attentive. They want to get you out of there as quickly as you can eat... LOL. That experience kept us away from the Aqua dining room for the rest of the week.

Sorry to droll on... more to come

We were on the ship with you. I hope to write a review by this weekend. I agree with you that service was slow in the main 2 restaurants with the Venetian being worse. It was not just dinner, but breakfast and lunch too. Only once when we mentioned to our server that we would like to make the show that was 1.5 hrs later, did we ever get out for dinner under 2 hrs.

I like freestyle but I've found that not having the same waiter each night has some disadvantages. When you have the same wait staff each night, they remember your preferences and your name. And being on a fixed schedule helps them be more efficient.

We were on the Dwan Oct. 26-Nov 11- Repo Cruise Quebec to Tampa- I mUst say we ate 16 dinners , mostly in the Aqua and maybe once it was slow service, we were always in and out within 35-40 minutes. We usually ate at 8:00pm, after the Show, maybe that was the difference. Just our experience.

I was also on the 16 night repo, and we ate in the Venetian, and at the same table, at the same time, ('early bird'--4:30 PM) each and every night. We did get different servers for each meal, but we had the same headwaiter, and he insured that we got excellent service. My mother due to requiring a low sodium diet, got to preorder the next evenings meal, each night after dessert. We often asked for quick service, to make the 6:00 PM Team Trivia event, and we enjoyed all three courses with no problem, usually done by 5:30....

Our last cruises on the Dawn and the Gem and the Jewel a couple of years ago were a bit different, in that we had the same waiters at our regular table the entire cruise. I agree that it's nicer to have the waiters know your particular likes without having to ask. The headwaiter explained that they changed their policy to make the work load fairer by rotating table assignments. The tables at the windows are always the first to fill, and the waiters working those end up serving a lot more passengers than some of the less popular locations. Since the tips are the same regardless, there is no reward for serving more patrons--just more work.

I was under the impression that they previously assigned more desirable work locations by the seniority system. The more years with the line would give the better choice, with the new hires getting the least desirable locations....

I never had any other meals at the Venetian. Since we were in a suite, we took advantage of the wonderful breakfast experience each morning at Cagneys, and had lunch either at Cagneys, or the Garden buffet for some more variety...

We were on the same cruise, but we had kind of the opposite experience - the best MDR serrvice we had was in Aqua. However, it was towards the end of the week - maybe kinks had been worked out by then? This was kind of funny - my son and I had ordered the coconut souffle. AFTER ordering, my son asks, "what's a souffle?" LOL. So I described it as kind of a fluffy custard. Well...he didn't like it. I thought it was great, but he was making faces. Next thing we know, the head waiter or maitre'd was right there, wanting to know if everything was okay with the food. I'm laughing, trying to explain that it was delicious, just not to my son's taste. :p

Venetian's service was fine, IMHO, but I did notice a wait - often. That wasn't something I'd seen in the MDRs on my other NCL cruises. Not sure what that was about. The worst was on Thanksgiving (which we completely avoided by ordering pizza - true story).

What is considered "peak" dining times? Would like to avoid the long waits if we can.

We try to be there when the dining rooms open if possible, not always so when it's a port intensive cruise. Once the capacity is filled, then waits can happen. (I see the lines in the 6:30-8:00 range but I imagine this can vary according to itinerary.) As early birds, we've never waited and we're platinum, believe it or not. Also when a ship begins a new home port, it is common for crew contracts to change. When the servers, cooks, etc. have just begun and many are new to the ship, things slow down. We've found this on more than just NCL. I also wonder if there have been more crew reductions which might result in longer waits, slower service, etc. Found this on both HAL and RCCL in the past year. Returning to NCL this week and will see if I notice a change.

Thanks for your review. I'll be on the Dawn in February 2014 out of Tampa. On my first NCL cruise this April, I always ate in the speciality restaurants, because of the reviews I've read and I think I will continue on all my NCL cruises (I have 3 more booked) to do this. You are more patience than I, I would have called the Maitre'd over when I was first ignored by the waiter and I would guess the service would have been exceptional after that.

I was on the Dawn the week of November 11. I ate all of my breakfasts and dinners in the Venetian and had excellent service each time, except for breakfast on the last day. I had to ask for more coffee twice, even though my cup was totally empty when my breakfast was served. On the other hand, one of the waitresses I had (Rihena, I believe) at dinner one evening remembered me and my name two days later. I always ate dinner between 5 and 5:30 and never had to wait.

I was also surprised not to have my ice bucket filled when I arrived in my cabin on the first day. Also, no Freestyle Daily on the bed as I was used to. But, I learned from my previous cruise and immediately headed to the Atrium to retrieve one before they were all gone. Didn't meet my steward until the second day.

Sorry for the delay..... so to continue

1st sea day: My husband and I found the Dawn to be pretty lax in planned activities. For those of you that have been on Carnival (as an example) there always seemed to be SOMEthing going on. Stuff you don't have to pay extra for. I realize that NCL is not the "party" atmosphere but still. Seemed like they purposely didn't have much planned so you'd spend all your time paying for the spa, going to the casino or shopping in one of the stores onboard. Seemed like there was a whole lot more of "do this fun activity for an upcharge" going on. Weather was not cooperating so I get that pool type activities would be an issue, but like I said, didn't seem like much was planned regardless.

We had reservations at LaCucina on our first sea day. Contrary to the so-so reviews I read on here, we absolutely loved it. We both had the chicken parm. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce was much better than expected. We were so stuffed that I actually passed on the tiramisu, which everyone around us seemed to be enjoying. Well worth the $15 charge.

Roatan, Honduras

We chose the NCL excursion Tabyana Beach Party. Did lots of research ahead of time so we brought our own snorkeling equipment. Again, the weather wasn't cooperating so the snorkeling and beach time didn't go as planned. Certainly not NCL's fault. Just a bad weather day. Lunch provided was adequate. Burgers, dogs, BBQ chicken, rice & beans. Line for the buffet was tremendously long and the sand fleas were a bit irritating. Drink prices were pretty good and there is a small gift shop on site. Those of you that are coffee drinkers.. the have Honduran coffee in the gift shop here for $6 per pound. 1/2 pound bags in the port area are $9.00 each.

Belize

We opted for a private cave tubing tour in Belize. Tendering was not fun and seemed a bit unorganized. I heard that there were several problems with the tenders and I think there was a medical emergency at one point. Cave tubing was quite the experience. If you have the opportunity, try it. With a private company we paid less than 1/2 of what NCL was charging for the excursion. After our excursion we had lunch in the Venetian again, which would be our second and last time dining in the MDR for the rest of the week. Service was fine since the restaurant was empty at the time and the food was okay. I had the sirloin but it was cooked in some kind of oil that gave it a funny taste. Calamari was perfectly cooked.

Costa Maya was the highlight of our trip. If you're not on an excursion and want to head to the Malecon, walk outside the gated area. There is an old Hard Rock Cafe there and the taxis are only $2pp instead of the $5pp they charge inside the port area. We stayed all day with Steve at Tropicante. Food and drinks were all fantastic. Beach was gorgeous and all of the staff were so friendly. We had no problems getting back to the port area.

Cozumel ... the Dawn apparently drew the short straw and got stuck with tendering... there were 6 other ships in port. Not only did we have to tender but tendered to International Pier instead of Langosta.

We had an NCL excursion, which we chose because we knew ahead of time there would be a LOT of other ships in port. Tendering again was not the easiest process. From what I understand, they weren't even offering open tendering for passengers until well after 1pm.

Our excursion was just miserable. Hurry up and wait. We were ushered off the tender and met back up with another group. We waited about 30 minutes before we were escorted to the taxi area (yes, a group of 30 had to take taxis) and waited another 20 minutes before we were off to Stingray Beach. Stingray guides were very informative but again, way too many people for this kind of excursion. They put us with yet another group so we became 60. Half of us went to snorkel with the rays and the other half went to the feeding. We spent about 30 minutes in the water and it was so hard to snorkel. Not just because of the waves but because so many people were in such a small area. I lost count of how many times I was kicked by someone, once even having the mask knocked off my face. We moved over to the feeding area and then cut that short. The waves were so bad that everyone was slipping and sliding all over the place. One couple we met got thrown by a wave into the safety rope and got some serious rope burn. We basically gave up and left. Got back to Int'l pier and decided just to go back to the ship. Disappointed in the excursion to say the least.

Work beckons... will continue soon! :)

I prefer to miss the line which forms before the dining room opens, so I go about thirty minutes later. There are still plenty of tables left after the first rush. The other time I refuse to go to the dining rooms is just after the first show. Seems a lot of those who attend the first show head for the dining rooms after the first show. You can avoid long lines if long lines are going to ruin your vacation with just a bit of time planning.

I have to agree about having the same waiter for the entire cruise, but for us, the benefits of freestyle outweigh the disadvantages. That being said, it is also important, for everyone to remember, traveling during a busy season (family vacation time) isn't the best time to get the best service...We have only done 1 cruise over Thanksgiving, it wasn't NCL, we had a lot of positives, but the service that week could have been better..As for dinner taking 2 hours, we have only had that experience once on NCL. We had the long meal a couple of times on our last cruise, again, not NCL. We do try to go to dinner about 6:30 and rarely have any problems.

If you were a "bit disappointed" I assume you still had a good time. Hopefully the good memories took out any sting from a few things going wrong.

I am a big believer in talking calmly to those in charge that can make corrections when needed, and as a M&G attendee/organizer I know NCL promotes this concept.

So, I hope you will give NCL another try. Different ship, different crew and pax mix, different itinerary, different dates??? Might just be the ticket.

Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts and taking the time to mix in some positives with the nagatives. Much appreciated.

We were on last week too, as FT is reporting in another thread. I have sailed Carnival four times, and IMO NCL offers a lot more planned activities on sea days than CCL.

We ate in Aqua twice, the first time on sail away night was a bit slow, however the next time was the night of the chocolate buffet. We were in a suite so had an early entry into the buffet, and as a result needed to eat in a hurry. We were in and out of Aqua in 40 minutes, but we did not have dessert.

Agree that the line at Tabayana was long at first but if you waited instead of rushing there was a short wait. The buffet was good, and as usual drinks were an exceptional value.

The sad part was that the waves were the biggest I have seen in four trips to Tabayana, at least 5 - 7 feet. I have never seen the water anything other than flat as glass there.

The only comment I can make about Cozumel is that tendering was a mess because the seas were too rough to use ship tenders, and the local tenders were very inefficient. Thank goodness we had priority tendering.

So there was priority tendering for suites in Cozumel even though the tendering wasn't planned? That's good to know- I was afraid they wouldn't have time to contact the suites and arrange that with. We are also scheduled to be in Cozumel on a day with 7 ships (including Dawn) so I'm worried we'll have to tender too. What time did you meet for the priority tender?

Forgot to mention, the night of Belize we had reservations at Cagney's. VERY unimpressed with the dinner we had. My husband got the prime rib, which came out grilled and looked like a ribeye. He sent it back because he thought they gave him the wrong thing. The restaurant manager came out and insisted it was correct. Apparently they remove the prime rib from the oven and throw it on the grill and sear it. (Something we've never seen before). My ribeye looked like a strip and wasn't very flavorful. The shrimp cocktail and smoked salmon appetizers were very good though. I didn't like the set up of the tables either. They first sat us next to the grill/cook window where the servers pick up the food. Not my idea of fine dining. Actually reminded me of being at Waffle House. I politely asked to be moved and we were accommodated after a scowl by the hostess.

Cozumel night we ate Le Bistro. WOW. Absolutely fantastic. I had the cornets (4 tiny waffle cones filled with different chopped salads), Beef Filet (which melted in your mouth) and the apple tartin (meh). My husband had the duck and endive salad (duck cooked perfectly) and the coq au vin. Sooo delicious!!!

I can't think of any more daily details but I'll offer the pros and cons as follows:

:)

Blue Lagoon - The BEST chicken wings. They became a nightly ritual. LOL

Garden Cafe (Buffet) - We ate most meals here. No problems.. clean tables, fresh food and great variety

2 for 1 happy hour- Best if you're drinking beer. Buckets are normally $33 dollars. 2 for 1 applies so you wind up getting 12, paying for 6.

Casino bar is the best for mixed drinks.

Splenda IS available on the Dawn. My steward saw that I was using it and made sure I had plenty each day. In the dining room were yellow packets of something. But I DID get actual Splenda

Cigarette Prices - $30 for a carton of Marlboro. 'nuff said

Second City - very funny show

White Hot Party - we were really looking forward to this. We got there about 10:15... it was pretty crowded. At 11 they make under 18 leave. When the kids left, EVERYONE left. Seriously. First time on a cruise when the cruise director and staff bailed before the party got started. What a shame.

Hot tubs crowded with kids Even with the big sign that says ADULTS ONLY

Spinnaker Lounge - I've heard people say it used to be bigger before the dry dock. They had the Second City performing an improv show and used the Spinnaker instead of the Stardust. Absolutely ridiculous. Too many people crammed into a little space. And you thought the pool chair hogs were bad?

Available activities - I'm looking back through my dailies now to see what we missed. Nothing it seems. Lots of "come learn about this treatment at the spa so we can sell you stuff"... "come buy this card so you can pay more to participate in this game show"... "library books available for check out (THAT is an actvity?)

Jose & Patti - Okay so they were pretty entertaining at first. But then it seemed like they were ALWAYS there in the atrium performing. He's rambling about Neil Diamond and she's laughing along. Don't get me wrong they're pretty good. But it gets old hearing them several times a day.

Pool Activities We went out to the pool twice around 10pm to see if there was anything going on. Bars were shut down, pool net was on and I swear I saw a tumbleweed blow by. :p

CONSTANT sales pressure - Buy these pictures, buy this wine package, buy this fractured glass print, enter this tournament

OH! And no fishbowl. Drink of the day in Roatan was the Rebellious Fish. They even ADVERTISE the drink being served in the fishbowl. Nope. They stopped using them 5 months ago I was told.

I'm sure I've forgotten lots so PLEASE ask any questions you might have. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing NCL... apparently it's just not for us.

I think the tendering was planned, just not being unable to use the Dawn's tenders and having to rely on a local subcontractor. For about an hour - I think between 8:30 and 9:30 you met the concierge in front of the Italian restaurant and were put on the next tender. It was a continual operation. I believe they kept it running past the scheduled time but am not absolutely sure.

Wow that sign must be new. Been on the Dawn and her sister ship the Star, no where did I see an "adults only" hot tub.

Yup. Saw the signs on all 4 hot tubs around the pool. Didn't think much of the kids being there since it was the pool area and parents were usually around, but the "hidden" hot tub on the Serenity Deck which is supposed to be an adults only area had kids in it as well.
