Ultimate Cruise Snob Stories

Would love to hear your reflections on the ultimate cruise snobs out there.

Last fall we were on the Caribbean Princess and encountered a couple that were parading around the ship with Faux Princess name tags, similar to the cruise staff, with Mom & Dad printed on them pinned. They had these tags pinned to their clothing. It was obvious that their intent was to be braggadocios of their status with Princess.

What your favorite Cruise Snob Story?

Probably gonna be called a snob for saying this but.. my ultimate snob experience wasn't on a ship but a review right here in CC... I won't say the guys name or the name of the ship he was reviewing but he was appalled at the fact he was served red wine in a white wine glass & couldn't believe they used the same salt & pepper shakers in all dining areas.

Last Nov. on the Ruby I had the "pleasure" of eating breakfast in the Davinci DR next to a couple who complained throughout their whole meal about the servers. Not that they wouldn't come but that they came too many times and offered them too much! The lady said "If he comes over here and wants to fill my coffee AGAIN, I am going to throw it on him!"

They were very rude to the servers. I was appalled people could act that way. :(

They weren't snobs, they were jerks (other terms came to mind but I decided to be polite).

We were on the Golden in Alaska and had a couple at the Chef's Table that complained the entire time about the food. She made the chef cook her steak three times. On the other hand, he very graciously attempted to make her happy. After spending the evening with this boorish couple, we spent the balance of the cruise avoiding them!

Some people grow them young! They can only learn that behavior from their parents. I would have given them something to brag about!;)

Cruising on the "old" Royal Princess in the Med with friends, 6 of us. Around day 3 the MTD asked if a couple could join our table that evening. "Sure!", was our reply.

The couple were an older couple from Great Britain who told is they usually didn't sail Princess and promptly told us they would not again. "Unconscionable" was the gentleman's favorite phrase that evening.

The 6 of us were enjoying our meal, albeit in a more reserved manner due to the dinner guests when the gentleman turned to me and asked "Why do you wave around your hands when you speak?" Oops! I do tend to speak with my hands. "Unconscionable" was his reply.

Needless to say we saw them at their own table the next evening. I think no one they had previously dined with wanted them back at their table. I'm sure it's not because they could find anyone "Conscionable".

Waiting in line for a tender a lady commented to a blind person with a service dog .... """ the only good dog is a hotdog'""""". I was disgusted to say the least. You couldn't ask for a better dog. Golden retriever with lots of grey showing its age. After hearing that, nothing would surprise me. I like everyone else was stunned by the comment. Regrettably the person making the comment was ahead on me and I didn't get a look at her face because given the opportunity later I would have made a big scene without the blind lady present.

How about the "lady" in a wheelchair? The elevator arrived full & she DEMANDED that people get off to make room for Her Royal Highness.

Steve

Had a similar encounter with a "gentleman" in a scooter, sat on the horn the whole time he was in public spaces trying to move people out of his way. You could tell where he was across the ship.

I think we have all met our share..I truly do feel badly for the crew..I think we might have to take some of the blame. We can be a little too accepting,I have reached the point that I am not adverse to tell people to lighten up or something stronger when they get really boorish. They need to hear it.

We were on a wine country cruise last fall and had the same table and waiters every night. Each night we'd order very nice wines. Well 5 nights into the cruise, the Sommelier approached and asked if the wine lecturer couold join us since he'd had trouble finding people to enjoy wine with in traditional dinning all week. He sat down with us and immediately pulled out his own wine glasses from a case and started fussing at our waiters. (Now mind you, we decided later he wasn't a bad person, but more eccentric) But at one point the waiter who'd been attending a second table started to walk away and the lecturer wanted something, started snapping his fingers and shouting "hey boy". My response though was to very politely call "Alejandro" and got an instant response. Needless to say our guest was pleasant the rest of the meal, after being shown he was being out of line.

Another reason we choose to dine by ourselves. You never know who you will get stuck with.

A couple of years ago on the Emerald it was a formal night and we decided that we would not dress up and that we could eat in the Caribe Cafe. On the way back from eating our elevator stopped and 2 formally dressed up couples got on.

They did not say a word until they reached their deck and they proceeded to get off. Before exiting the elevator, the one lady turned around and very scarcastically said "Well, I guess that you were NOT invited to have cocktails with the Captain tonight like we were!", and she proceeded to get off.

We were dumbfounded...and at a loss for words. Guess she got a bit of a surprise when she arrived to find out that they and about 2000 other people we are this intimate affair.:) The door closed before we could say anything.

Another time, in Anytime Dining, we were at a large table of strangers, and after the usual introductions and the 'where are you froms', one of the ladies said "Wow, for Canadians, you speak English very well!"

On a trans-Atlantic on the most recent Royal, our set dinner mates at a table for 8 included an individual and a lady friend. As it turned out, a few months later they were the focus of an entire episode of 20/20. She was the family 'nanny' and both were in jail for fraud and identity theft and he was about to be charged with the murder of his wife. The wife died just a couple of weeks before the cruise.

This was quite a few years ago but I was seated at a table at lunch because there weren't many spots and a couple graciously said I could sit there. We were chatting and then they said in a snooty way, "Well, you know, we're on Aloha deck." I wanted to say, "And?" but all I said was, "That's nice." I didn't get into how I was on Caribe in a much better cabin. There are people out there who still think that the higher the deck, the further away they are from "steerage."

We met a "gentleman" who was appalled that there weren't different restaurants and lounges for different classes of passengers (this was on Oceania). He didn't want to associate with people staying in inside, window or balcony categories. He claimed he was very well traveled after letting everyone know how rich he was. Then at the bar he said he had never had a Margherita on the rocks with a salted rim; so he ordered one and we had to teach him how to drink it.

On a recent cruise to South America, there was an American lady on board who was boasting the longest cruiser on board, something like 1200 days.

She would wonder around the ship jumping in front of queues, demanding to be served first by the staff, being very rude to the staff, in fact the staff seemed scared to upset her.

One time she sat at our table and exclaimed 'only new cruisers get upgrades' - when I said that I am a new cruiser and that I didn't get an upgrade, the conversation stopped.

I lost count of the number of times I heard I say 'I am the longest cruiser on board' - very much one to avoid.

Like the wine lecturer mentioned above, it seems Princess does not hold its "non-employee" enrichment staff to any standard of conduct. On a cruise a few years ago the port lecturers were a mother-and-son team. Other than to each other they refused to speak with anyone else the entire two weeks. They wandered about the ship with their heads down avoiding eye contact. But it was easy to spot them as their wardrobe consisted only of shorts and tank tops a couple sizes too small. They were also charged with the task of escorting tour groups from the theatre when called to the gangway and the buses. But one morning they stood in opposite aisles and held a bellowing conversation with each other (about some sporting event they watched on TV) so loud that neither they or anyone else could hear the tour numbers as they were called by the excursion staff. I ended up sending a complaint form on them to the desk--which in retrospect I unfortunately got a little too personal with. But it did get me a call of apology from the Chief Purser who--choosing his words very carefully--implied that they had been searching for a replacement lecturer for quite some time without success. They did end up relieved of their tour-marshalling job, at least for the remainder of my cruise.

But even more boorish on a more recent Princess cruise was the family of one of the lead singers; he had brought them onboard to see his final shows of the season, the whole cast was changing after this cruise. They knew they were special and that special rules applied to them. They would stand up and take flash photos in the middle of a performance in the theatre. And if something was going on in the Piazza they would march to the front as it started and stand there blocking the view of those seated until some extra chairs would magically appear. And Mr. Vocalist was obvioulsy happy that his contract was up; during one song in 'Britsh Invasion' he broke character and stopped and glared at someone in the front row for a good minute.
