It's always sad to see a much-loved ship go to the breakers, but she was well past her sailing days.

As written in the report, the other ship used by P&O Princess, for the Love Boat, the Island Princess, is now sailing with Cruise and Maritime, as Discovery.

I think that ship got more people into cruising than any other ship in history. The power of T.V. , used to watch every Sat .night.

I am one of those that got hooked by that show. My first cruise was on the Pacific Princess from Whittier to Vancouver, in July of 1991 after a week-long escorted Princess Tour of Alaska. Still one of my all time favorite vacations, even after 21 cruises since then.

That ship, although small by modern standards, still had most of the features found on the largest ships of today. I had hoped to have a look inside at my old cabin for nostalgia, apparently it's too late now. Unless I can see her sister ship, the former Island Princess while I can....

Agree the Love Boat started it all... we never did a cruise on her, we started cruising in l982 on RCCL, then went on Sitmar, which became Princess, now on our 23rd Princess cruise and about 55 cruises total on 9 different lines. How cruising has changed from those early days is amazing.

How many of you remember the pilot movie for that t-v show shot in 1976? It had an entirely different cast, although many of the same character's that the series featured. And many of the 'guest stars' of the pilot went on to do a few appearances on the series as well. Here's a link to the IMDB for it....

edit: oh, and it was filmed on the old Sun Princess, so that should get the credit as the 'first' love boat........

They were certainly able to get top name TV stars (and some movie stars) of the day on the show.

Sad to see any ship go to the breakers but especially one so many of us feel like we had sailed on after watching the show for years.

I thought I was the only nut who would rember that the Captain was a real grouch and the C.D.was a really looker and nice like Julie and gopher was a real nerd type and the doctor was the father from eight is enough(bad show). The best story line was with Don Addams and Florence henderson and the one with Karen Valentine and Hal Linden was also well done , dont rember any of the others but there were a few others . It would be a kick to see this today .

I wonder what ever happened to Terry O'Mara who played Gerry, the Cruise Director in the pilot....her career seemed to fizzle afterward....
