Double Muster Drill

P&OMAN

Recommended Posts

Four of us from the UK are on the Ryndam for 2 weeks from Saturday 21st September.

As this cruise is classed as a back to back, 2 x 7 days cruises does this mean we will have to attend a second muster drill before we leave Athens second time around on the middle Saturday of our 14 night cruise.

Yes, you will. It's a new requirement after the Concordia - at the start of a new cruise, regardless of whether or not you have sailed with the ship for a while, all passengers have to attend. They will make announcements to that effect as well. In addition, when you attend the little talk that CVG guests get before the turn around day, they always remind us that we have to go again. My husband and I think that it's always fun for people watching. We get to check out our fellow guests for the next cruise!:D

The thing is if the cruise is booked as one 14 day and not a B2B the second muster drill doesn't have to be attended. On our 14 day Alaska this last summer we didn't have to attend the second muster drill because we where booked as 14 day not two 7 day B2B. This could be a decision of the cruise line.

This is not the case on HAL. You have to go, as KK said, no exceptions.

Was your Alaskan cruise on Princess? They have different rules.

Since the Concordia accident, all passengers on HAL Collectors Cruises (formerly known as back-to-backs) have to attend both life boat drills even though we have booked them as one cruise.

We have sailed Maasdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Westerdam and maybe other ships on Collectors cruises since Costa Concordia and have been required to attend both life boat drills. HAL is VERY serious about attendance. Guests have been removed from the ship for not attending.

On our recent Veendam cruise, there were several people who did not attend and Captain made a very direct announcement telling them to report to a certain location at a certain time and if they failed, they would be put ashore. We all heard him.

Agree totally. Really surprised Princess doesn't share the value of this.

Do we know 100% they don't? After the Concordia disaster Carnival Corporation revamped scores of their emergency response protocols/procedures and instituted them on their cruise lines incl. HAL. Princess also falls under the same umbrella

We did a b2b on Grand Princess in Dec 2012. We did not have to attend the second muster drill. We had booked the cruise as one 14 day cruise - don't know if that made a difference or not. To be honest we were surprised we didn't have to go to the second drill.

My comments were based on the other posters here, who indicated Princess doesn't require attendance at the second muster of a B2B. If the other posters are wrong, and Princess does require attendance, I would be very happy.

Remember John, safety is no accident!

OK, I suggest a duel at sunrise, pistols at 20 paces....:D:p;);)

Kamloops50, given Copper 10-8's previous employment, you are in serious trouble!!!

How 'bout a duel with pistols loaded with blanks?;)

Seriously, Kamloops, thanks for confirming that Princess does not require lifeboat/muster drill attendance for b2b pax during the second week of the b2b

Princess also gathers people in public areas like casinos or theaters for their drills which I disagree with. It would not be a stretch for those to be off base in a real emergency. I know it is not popular with all but I believe you should meet at the place you will meet during the real event. You don't want to be hunting for your muster station during an emergency.

In case of emergency you'll gather in the same place that the muster drill was held. Then they'll direct you to the available life boats.

All I can say is if they make me attend two muster drills on my upcoming collectors cruise, I will expect the benefits of two cruises . I will expect my new 5 star mariner status to be reflected on the second half. They just can't have it both ways. It either is or isn't one cruise.

I was on the Westerdam Hawaii Tahiti (with Kakalina), except I boarded in Seattle. Passengers also boarded in Vancouver and San Diego. The Seattle passengers did were required to go to the drills only in Seattle and San Diego, but not in Vancouver.

On a B2B out of Rotterdam the instructions with the in transit passes stated the requirement for both drills.

We were on this year's Voyage of the Vikings where we had to attend the muster in Boston and again before leaving Amsterdam. Although the majority of us were doing the r/t (300 something disembarked and 200 + new passengers embarked in Amsterdam), I didn't hear anyone grumbling about having to attend 2 muster drills (although, I'm sure plenty did complain) and the drill went smoothly and quicker than the 1st.

The theatre, casino, and other lounges on Princess ships ARE the muster stations and is where you go incase of the emergency signal. If in the extremely unlikely event you have to abandon ship the exits from those area lead directly out to the lifeboat loading stations on both sides of the ship.

It is also possible on some ships on some lines where you muster at the lifeboats, that those areas could also be off limits depending on what the emergency is, in which case you are all going to be on one side of the ship.

On Disney Cruise Lines, some of the muster stations are in one of the MDRs as well as the main theatre. They are the actual locations we are to report to in an emergency. If, for whatever reason, a muster location is unavailable, there will be a crew member there directing us to a different one.

Actually, they can have it any way they want and there is not much you can do other then to complain/whine. If you really get upset about such things you can vote with your money and cruise on other lines instead of HA.
