Sounds like your having a great cruise. Your tour for Barcelona sounds wonderful-

"Today was Barcelona. Off the ship by 9:30am and on to Montserrat. Another gorgeous day of perfect weather: sunny and clear. Probably low 70's in Montserrat, upper 70's in Barcelona. There were nine of us in a bus for 23 with comfortable leather seats. We arrived in Monserrat just before 11am, walked up to the Basilica and our guide told us of the various things we could do with our free time, such as have lunch, some shopping, go up the funicular to the top of the mountain, etc. Five of us chose to go up the funicular, arriving at about 11:50am. We spent some time looking around and taking pictures, then headed back down. The reason is that the boys' choir sings every day at 1pm and to get a seat, you should be in the basilica by 12:30pm. The guide was right; it was packed with people sitting in the aisles. The choir performed for fifteen minutes and then it was a stampede to the buses. Back to Barcelona and Parc Guell, designed by Gaudi. We walked around, enjoying the weather and the architecture. After about an hour there, on to La Sagrada Familia. I first saw it in 1960 and several times since. We didn't have time to go in but instead walked around it while our guide explained the history and the architecture. Back to the bus to visit La Pedrera and several other buildings designed by Gaudi. Then up to Montjuic/Olympic park and back to the ship by 5:30pm. What a great day."

Was the tour offered by Princess or was it a private tour? If private would you mind to share the name?

Hope the rest of the cruise is going to be just as wonderful.........voltdoc

It had to have been a private tour. I don't think Princess has one that covers ALL the areas that Pam went to, right Pam? Montserrat sounds fantastic!

Good evening from the Royal Princess (2303 local time)We sailed from Barcelona at about 1950 hours. It was dark so I didn't get a chance to get any good sail away pictures.

We didn't go ashore today. I spent the day being a little lazy with the exception of working out in the Fitness center. It was nice not having it crowded.

I wanted to bring something up that some may see as a contradiction to something I posted earlier. We dined in the HC tonight and it was truely terrible. The hot food was cold, like rubber, and just all around bad. The service was also not much better. The waiters actually tried to take Holli's plate away before she was finished. I was never asked if I wanted a second cup of coffee. The waiters also seemed more interested is socializing than taking care of their customers. One of the supervisors was stuffing his face in the corner instead of watching over the waiters. All in all an experience I wish I could soon forget.

The above experience is another nail in the coffin of enjoying this cruise. In general the overall service (with the exception of Gina our cabin attendant) has been way below what I've been use to on my previous six Princess cruises.

Bar service continues to be terrible. You almost have to beg a bar waiter to get you a drink.

Entertainment options for tonight were almost non existant. There was a piano player in the theater. There was no night movie because they had a Latin themed party on the pool deck.

I keep hoping that the new day will be better, but it just continues to be bad or gets worse. I feel like a wasted a great deal of money for a cruise that is turning out to be the worst of my 14 cruises.

Bob

Bob, I am really sorry to hear how you are feeling about your cruise and hope that after you get home you will have time to write a review.

I am surprised at your experiences with the wait staff in the HC and more importantly to me (as I only eat breakfast in the HC when it opens) is your continued struggle to get served a drink-one of the profit centers for the line.

It sounds like poor supervision and lack of drive to build sales and repeat business. I had thought that the cream of the crop would have been assigned to the Royal in it's first year. Apparently not so.

Best wishes,

Thank you to those who have posted about their experiences on the cruise. Pam, it sounds like you had a great day. I love Barcelona and Montserrat and being able to hear the choir there is almost magical. Bob, I hope that things improve as you make your way to Madeira and then across the Atlantic. May you have smooth seas.

There are many other former RHRs on board and lots of other friends. I hope that now that the port a day part of the cruise has passed more of you will take a moment to let us at home know how you are doing. There are a lot of us who were booked and canceled for one reason or another and would like to hear from you. I hope you will have blue skies as you sail.

Just thought I would throw in my two cents. Someone mentioned the Red Hot Rubies. As one of those RHRs I can say the comments on this thread brought back many wonderful memories. However, I also remember there were folks on that cruise that said things like "never again." After about 20 cruises I have developed the opinion that on every cruise there are some folks who get off saying "best experience of my life" and some who get off the same cruise saying "worst trip of my life." I truly believe that for every cruise I have been on. I think there are so many variables - flights, baggage, room steward, waiters, weather, neighbors, entertainment opinions, shore excursions, folks you run into in different venues, and on and on and on.

That is why I dislike comparing cruise lines - because opinions from the "best trip of my life" folks will certainly be different than opinions from the "never again" folks, even on the same cruise line or even same cruise.

Cruise Critic provides a wonderful opportunity to hear from all, take with a bit of a grain of salt, and learn so much that may enhance our chances of having a good cruise experience ourselves. So thanks to all who have posted here, positive and negative. I have learned something from you all.

Sorry for the philosophical "rant" but if you are new to cruising, I recommend you try to develop reasonable expectations, have a positive attitude, avoid allowing a bad experience to impact too much on the entire experience.

I will be on the Royal on Oct 29 and expect to see some new ship design, meet some fun folks, and have a great time ----- even if I am not thrilled with some of the new design or run into some not fun folks, or whatever. Hope to see some of you on board.

It's been stolen. No one knows where it is. Probably in someone's private collection.

The general consensus of the people I have spoken with is that there are some positives, some negatives, and we'd cruise the Royal again for the itinerary rather than the ship itself.

Jimmy, this has been such a port-intensive start to the cruise that most people are dragging asses back on the ship with not a lot of energy to go to shows or stay up late. Most people have been off in port all day so not a not of activities planned. Yesterday in Cannes, probably more stayed on the ship due to it being a tender port.

the photo of Diana was missing when we sailed on the July 17 voyage...just an empty space. But Kate certainly looked lovely!

Thanks Norris. This cruise for the most part has been a big Royal let down. Overall, service (My Observations) has been very sub par; some of it being down right rude. It is shaping up to be the worst of my 14 cruises. BTW, I spent another 90 sober minutes in the Casino tonight:rolleyes:

I love reading all the posts from Bob, Pia, Pam, and Amelia. Everyone's take is different just like all of us reading will have different opinions. I'm sailing the royal in 39 days and am way excited to get onboard. No center elevators? Fine, I will walk a little further aft. No biggie. No promenade to walk on deck 7 after dinner? Fine,I'll go up to the sports deck and walk there. A vacation is what YOU make of it and should not be based on anyone else's vacation..just learn from what they have to say and adjust.

Yay to Pia who found a Dunkin' which is much better than starbucks!!! :D

Had a thoroughly lazy day yesterday. We were anchored off Cannes but I didn't feel like going ashore. I've been many times and needed a break from tours. Worked on my crocheting (I'm making a gorgeous shawl with fine lace yarn and the best part is that it doesn't look crocheted), read, napped, and read some more.

The food on the Royal Princess has been the best I've had on any other cruise ship on any line, including Princess, HAL, Royal Caribbean or Celebrity. For today's lunch, for instance, I had some sweet & sour chicken that was delicately flavored, not gloppy sweet, some Nasi Goreng (a chicken and rice dish), and some chicken vindaloo... just tablespoons of each for a taste, plus a salad. They had shredded chicken, ham, pork and cheese and lots of veggies to add to make a small chef's salad. Of course, there's always the usual buffet offerings. The Royal's buffet seems to go on and on. I'm not big on pastries so I don't have a clue what's offered but there's a whole "Pastry Shop" section.

Today was Barcelona. Off the ship by 9:30am and on to Montserrat. Another gorgeous day of perfect weather: sunny and clear. Probably low 70's in Montserrat, upper 70's in Barcelona. Now, two sea days and the next port is Madeira where I have an all-day tour planned.

Sounds like a great day, Pam.:) Enjoy your two sea days. Interesting to see within a few posts of each other how subjective food can be. While you posted this cruise has had the best food you have had Bob posted the food in HC was terrible. Happy to hear you are enjoying the food.:)

Good morning at sea where it’s still dark. Sunrise is not until 8:11 and temp today is supposed to be in the low 70’s.

We attended the folkloric show yesterday. Mike wanted to see them sweat so we sat in the 3rd row. Wish we had been in the back so could have sneaked out. That’s all I have to say. After dinner, back to our cabin for an early night. Not even a movie. Too tired to concentrate.

So what’s happening on board today? A lot. Morning has a lecture by Jules Talarico (he’s a marine biologist); “The Natural History of the Atlantic Ocean,” and at the same time, Philadelphia Story on MUTS. Also this morning in Princess Live is a presentation on Top Works of Art ever sold at auction. Oh, can’t forget the 3 hour only gifts for just $10 sale.

John Maxtone-Graham starts the afternoon with his very famous lecture “The Only Way to Cross,” also the title of his book which we own. There’s a pop choir rehearsal at 2 which also conflicts with another presentation “The Legacy of the Sicilian Mafia.” I’m going to choose the Mafia. MUTS will be showing Pirates of the Caribbean; Dead Man’s Chest, the Wake Show will be taping with a studio audience and an acrobat will perform in the Piazza. Several times throughout the day and evening too.

Tonight’s entertainment is the production show What the World Needs Now and MUTS is featuring Oblivion. Princess Live will have several trivias and game shows. It’s also formal night and our clocks go back. Looking forward to that extra hour of sleep.

Here are two more inspirational elevator messages:

1. The value of travel is the baggage you leave behind

2. To find inspiration look toward the horizon

Responses:

1. Jimmy Wine: I think you might misunderstand me. When I say nothing, I mean nothing for me. Then again, there is very little, if anything, happening on a port day. Just not enough people on board for them to schedule anything big. And as Gloria stated, we went to all the new shows and all the comedians. Mike and I do not care for shows that just feature solo singers

2. Donna Travels: The one bottle per person seems to only affect those boarding in U.S. or Canadian ports. In Europe, they don’t care what you bring. Example today, when I reboarded with 4 bottles. Friends also boarded with a case of beer. Nobody even glances at it.

3. Mapu: We should meet some time since we live so close to you. Will find out where J & J are going next.

4. Anita: The wine is Vinya del Mar at Carrefours market. It's white, but sort of sweet; like a riesling. Not my taste, but he loves it.

5. Everyone: There is nothing wrong with HC; we are there for just about every meal.

6. Gym: Never crowded. Not even once. And now I need to get there.

Good morning from the Royal Princess. I'm getting ready to head down to Sabatini's for breakfast. Breakfast here has been one of the few bright spots about the cruise so far. The food and service is always outstanding. A welcomed sea day today. Tonight is a formal night. Looking forward to dressing up in my tux, but not to experiencing another night of sub standard service which seems to be present in many areas of the ship in the evening.

Thanks. I don't think I was misunderstanding you as much as I was trying to understand you. :) I get what you are saying.

We have been on Royal for over a week now. Already posted my satisfaction with fitness (running track and gym). Completely satisfied with service, food, and layout. Reading some of the complaints makes me feel like they are on another ship. We would book Royal again.

Attended my second TRX class this morning. There are two of us now. Haven't noticed any movement, though it has been fairly come.

We are also on board the Royal at the moment. I will post my opinion on this ship when we get back. Definitely some hits and misses in OUR opinion.

But so far, in terms of the staff, I have to say that the service that WE have experienced so far has been exceptional. All the staff members we have interacted with have been friendly and professional. We are enjoying ourselves immensely, and we are very glad to be on board. And the weather has been fantastic (I clearly got it wrong when I packed - I expected much cooler weather!! )

Very happily enjoying 2 days at sea now. Time to relax.

Hi Gail and Ron! Great to hear from you. Saw Jules at the maritime Museum this afternoon - Joanne decided to rest up on the ship. Will gladly pass on your greetings.

Thanks Elfie. Do you and Sam only take TAs?

Having followed your "Live" threads for years I too would like to meet . Looks like we each have a break from cruising in November. We live at the "Valencia" on Lyons just south of Hypoluxo. We met Jules and Joanne a few years ago on a Ruby TA and sailed with them again on an Emerald TA when we met Elfie and Sam.

Have had a quiet day today. It's sunny and gorgeous. Got up early for a 9am "Knitters and Natters" get-together. About 10-12 people showed up. Some were knitting, some crocheting, one doing counted cross stitch, etc. It was a nice 45 minutes to meet new people. We had to leave early due to trivia at 10am.

Laundry is still taking 3-4 days. I discovered this morning that I'd run out of underwear and had to re-use. Yuck. Went to the PSD and asked them for suggestions as to what to do. She called the laundry and they are going to prioritize my bag, which was sent in the 14th (it's now the 17th.) I told the woman that I didn't trust them to get my stuff back to me this afternoon and what should I do? I said I'd be willing to do my own laundry so she immediately gave me some tokens. Did a small load so now I have a day or two's worth and tokens to do another load tomorrow, if necessary.

Last night was Bavarian night in the buffet. Delicious with kielbasa, bratwurst, and several other wursts and mustard. The thing I love about the buffet (and hate at the same time) is that it's endless with a huge variety. I can't imagine anyone, even the pickiest, not finding something to eat. For lunch today, I had some curried lamb, some wok noodles, steamed vegetable dumplings, some chicken nuggets with soy sauce, and a salad.

Tonight is formal night and we'll probably eat in the buffet. Didn't see anything on the menu that was appealing. There's lobster and chateaubriand but I don't eat lobster on a cruise ship unless it's fresh and I can take or usually leave chateaubriand.

Went to the Retreat this afternoon and it was packed. I'd say 80% of the loungers had just a towel on them, no people. 0% of the loungers have shade. None. Some people require full shade, not "sort of" shade. There are trellises and canvas coverings above the loungers on the sides but there is still some sun on every single one. None of the cabanas was in use. I thought I was going to like this area but now I know I can't use it, which is a bummer.

The service and responsiveness (so far) on the Royal has been excellent. Better than other ships and cruiselines I've sailed. There are negatives such as the lack of mid-ship stairs and the Elite laundry issues but it's far from the "cruise from hell." The food has been great and the service (buffet, dining room, bar and cabin steward) has been excellent. Yes, I hear noise above my cabin early in the morning, I have to go into the hallway to access the Royal's WiFi, my TV is rattling and driving me crazy, and the laundry situation has me frustrated. I've had far worse cruise experiences. Is it going to be one of my all-time top cruises? No. It's a good cruise and I'm looking forward to sailing her next year.

Yes, I'm taking only private tours on this cruise. I organized my Messina, Naples and Rome tours, and others organized the Barcelona and Madeira tours.

One of the people on our roll call was "caught" collecting money for a tour she was organizing and received a reprimand and told that Princess doesn't allow the organization of private tours as it's competition to the Princess tours.. She then received a nasty letter. Meanwhile, others not only organized private tours but arranged with Princess for a large group to be allowed in to the Platinum/Elite tendering lounge (which apparently pissed off a bunch of Platinum/Elite to see so many who weren't in the lounge) and receive priority tendering for them. That doesn't make sense. So, if you are organizing a tour, be very, very careful where you collect the money.

Tomorrow's another sea day.

Thanks to all who are on the ship and providing updates! I sure wish I was there instead of at my desk working!

We almost always use the HC for all meals while on a cruise. My DH does not like to sit for dinner for a long time so our special treat while on board is always a trip to Crown Grill and he bears the length of dinner only because he knows he is going to love the food.

We leave in December and there have been times I thought I should have just booked a ship we have already been on and enjoyed but the thought of a "new" ship was too exciting for us. We will be celebrating a major milestone (25 years of marriage) and we booked this trip on what I consider a whim as we have never been able to do two cruises in one year.

I'm sure we will like many things and may not like some but I am ready to experience the Caribbean on a different ship from this spring. Wish I was adventurous as most of you going to Europe but maybe one day.

Keep the good and bad coming... makes my countdown go quicker!

Thanks for the report on this. Several people have predicted that this would be an issue (and then got shouted down for being "negative" without yet sailing on the ship.) It is very helpful to have these details from people who are on or have been on board to relay the full experience. I'm bummed that the predictions of poor design have proven true. But honestly, a quick glimpse at the deck plan and photos strongly suggest that the pool areas are ill-suited for a ship with this many passengers and a demographic that tries to stay one step ahead of melanoma.

**********************************

Is it going to be one of my all-time top cruises? No. It's a good cruise and I'm looking forward to sailing her next year.

I think this sums up a lot. I go into every cruise with the idea that the baseline quality is "good" and it is hard for that standard to not be met. Some cruises elevate to "very good" or "great". But as long as I get where I am going safely, I will always enjoy myself. Have fun as you cross the Atlantic!

Hi Pam, A few questions if you don't mind. What cabin are you in where you here noise from above? We are in L222 for next April's TA. It is under the Retreat (it was a guarantee). I am wondering how noisy that might be. Would you have any idea? Thanks.
