If you have a cruise booked, it will be in the excursion section along with pricing.

 

You might as well book it thru your cruise line as the pricing is the same or nearly so.

 

It might be a little early for it to show on a cruise line site. Many lines don't open their sites for booking until 90 days or so before your sailing.

We're sailing next May on Princess and the shore excursions have been open for quite awhile. There are several variations offered for the White Pass Train on our cruise, ranging from $129 - $199 depending on what else you add. White Pass also has a website with prices if you just google it.

Be sure to compare all the options. There is the round trip train, combo, one way Fraser train, return by road to Skagway. One way Fraser train, by road going to Emerald Lake and return. Can also have additions of sled dogs, lunch. The longest train excursion is the Lake Bennett, which is also one way.

 

These combo trips can go in both directions.

 

Booking through the cruise line, boards at the cruise ship. IF you book independent, you will board at the depot.. BUT hopefully you would be going into Skagway- either what you select to book.

Book with Chilkoot..a big difference vs the ship excursion and it's not always about a few $$'s..We did the bus up train down with Chilkoot and we had an amazing bus driver/guide and there were only approx 18 of us...nothing like the big bus load that ships offer.

We have booked for next summer with Chilkoot for the 7.5 hour round-trip (train/bus), including lunch and dogcart ride - total price is US$ 211 pp. I phoned their office and Shona answered and was very helpful and accommodating

If you're only going one way by train, sit on the left side leaving Skagway. Conversely, if you take the train down, sit on the right for the best views.;)

Across two cruises, we've consistently heard that the longer the train ride, the higher the enjoyment and satisfaction.

If you enjoy train rides than of course the longer the better. Going all the way to Carcross is the ultimate in train trips.

 

The ride from Skagway to the summit the hy and rr take opposite sides of the canyon so the views are similar but different.

 

From the summit to Fraser the hy and rr parallel each other. Fraser is where all of the train+bus tours change from train to bus and vice versa. Bus tours either go back to Skagway or on to Carcross and the Yukon.

 

Going further by train and you go away from the hy and along the shores of lake Bennett - and you are able to see the old town as well as the end of the Chilkoot trail. Bennett is a great stop for history buffs and fills in some of the gaps in the gold rush history heard in other places in Skagway.

Go to gthe railroad website. 2014 prices probably not there yet. The difference in booking on your own is the need to walk - 15 minutes - into town and about $20pp less. The train is a great ride IF the weather is decent ie. not pouring rain. You can laways book a day ahead by calling them from an earier port.

We did the round trip from the cruise terminal. We booked through the cruise line and didn't feel crowded at all. Take your camera! It's gorgeous! There are also places to eat in town, so no reason for a hokey tour operated lunch.

If you took the round trip train, it is only a few hours and there is no need for a meal. The tours that provide lunch are much longer, 7.5 - 9 hours - so that "hokey tour operated lunch" is more necessary. Some people are interested in going into the Yukon and seeing much more than the round trip train tour offers, and it is convenient to have lunch included.

Chilkoot does a great job. Again look at the railroad website. Have ridden this train 4 times going back to the 1980s. On one occassion it was foggy and rainy and simply not worth doing. Bokking with the train or Chilkoot or the train directly you can wait and see what the weather is going to be like.

 

There are historic buildings in town worth at least an hour or two. About a 15 minute (fast walkng) walk to town. Pass on the jewelry stores. Another good option is to rent a car and go off on your own. Dyea is the original place where the gold seekers took off. About 30 minute BEAUTIFUL drive. A drive up to the pass also great. Renting a car does require planning ahead, but you can cancell up to a day ahead when we did it in 2010.

Frankly, you can not "tell" what the weather is, more than a few miles out of Skagway. And the "weather" and viewing can be vastly different. Luck of the draw. You usually can not get a Chilkoot tour at the last minute since they usually are fully booked in advance.

Another vote here for Chilkoot Charters. The small bus size is great, and the driver seemed to know when the big buses were coming and did his best to avoid them. At the photo stops we usually had the turnout to ourselves. Chilkoot reserves a train car just for their guests.

 

I went with them to Carcross a couple of years ago, this year will go with them again up to Bennet.

I'm looking at a RCL excursion that is a round trip where you change sides on the way back is that the one you were on? It says the train is the "Scenic Railway of the World."

Checked it out and went with Alaska Green Jeep rentals, less expensive, get GPS/Maps, cooler with snacks/drinks (can order sandwiches also) stop suggestions etc. This way we can stop at our leisure and go further into the Yukon than train.

We did this this past June, it is amazing. i would recommend to buy Murray's Guide. It tells you everything you need to know mile by mile.
