Timeline of Checking In at Departure

Can I check-in to my cruise the day of departure at the port, then go explore the city? I will be on a cruise out of Venice and it'd be very convenient to leave my luggage with the cruise line and do some sightseeing.

In almost all cases the answer is yes.

 

Just be sure to be back on the ship by the required time frame.

Yes you can.

We have done that a couple of times.

Yes that is not a problem. In fact you can just drop off your luggage and checkin when you return.

You will have your key card and that is all you should need.

if you are arriving a day or so before would you not have a hotel ? They will store your bags (in most cases) until you head to the ship

The ship would not have returned from the prior cruise and the port will likely be closed so no way to check in and leave bags.
