Would you give up your ball games to go on a cruise???

And, since cruise lines need to pay for rights to broadcast most sports competitions, there is no guarantee that the Super Bowl will be shown. On our most recent Oceania cruise, they didn't show The Belmont Stakes!

Oceania is not big in the US and thus may not cater to the US tastes in sporting events. That said, the Super Bowl is well known through out the world and is more likely than the Belmont Stakes to be shown.

I guess it depends on whether you have actual tickets, or just watch it on the television!

We've never been unable to find football or baseball games on a cruise ship bar television. He can make a lot of new friends, too. Take the cruise!

Not sure which lines you've cruised on but all I have been on have sports bars onboard with walls of TVs. Also sports are played in the casinos. And we've watched football games on the huge outdoor screen on Lido deck.

I'm pretty sure he would be able to watch football. BUT if it was a port day you may be off the ship during a game.

I'd tell him to stay home with his precious teams to keep him warm. You find a friend and tell him you'll show him the pictures when you get home.

If he will not go on a cruise because of a football game I am pretty sure that if he was on a cruise he would not go into port while the game is on.

(Per an error in someone's earlier post) Viewing a sports event over wifi would not cost hundreds extra if you purchased an unlimited internet package.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

The fees for those unlimited internet packages DO NOT include data and streaming live events. You can send as much email as you like. JUST not data. There is a limit-even with pictures.

I stand corrected. Even more reason for hubby to DVR his game at home.

We canceled a cruise because it would have interfered with the MLB playoffs. We cruised instead during the summer, where we did miss a couple of games we had tickets for, in addition to those on TV. We were able to keep up with some games on the computer, through the NYTimes available on HAL. We bought a post season strip....where we saw only one game before our team got eliminated!! We aren't sorry....someone is doing a blog currently where we can cruise vicariously through them! They had horrible weather in the one port that we really wanted to go to, and ended up not seeing as much as they would have liked. I sure wouldn't not cruise at all during a sports season...that is a little obsessive!

I do not know if the ship will show a game which is played while most passengers are ashore. They could decide it is not worth the cost for the limited number staying on.

Thanks everyone for your comments. DH is a huge Baltimore Ravens fan.. (we actually had to come back to fl this past week because he and my son have tickets to see them in Tampa.) He says after the end of the football season the cruise lines will have the playoff games on the tv, but not the reg season. He doesn't think there is anything wrong with wanting to stay home for the games! I am still debating as to what to do.

(EGG)n Cape Coral is right outside Ft Myers Florida

(Suitetraeler) DH doesn't know how to get to websites on the computer much less anything more complecated.

if he wants to see the Birds, sail out of Baltimore. Grandeur shows them on the big screen by the pool

but to be perfectly honest if he doesn't see what is so very WRONG with his selfishness, there is nothing you can do to make him see reason. anyone who fails to consider your feelings is just too self absorbed to care. I say again..go without him and DO NOT feel in the least bit guilty.

What cost? The ship is paying for the program package whether it shows it or not. The ship does not get to pick and choose which programs from the package it wants and doesn't want.

It is just like you cable/satellite TV at home. You pay for the package and pay the same rate whether or not you actually watch any of the programs.

Two of the four December Ravens' games are against opponents they will probably easily beat, the Jaguars and the Texans. Your husband may or may not be right about the ship's showing playoff games. Even if he is right, what if there's a problem with the satellite feed? He might be better off going on a cruise during the regular season, especially when the Ravens are playing a team that's not so good, and miss that game, than risk missing watching a playoff game...assuming the Ravens even make the playoffs.

But if he's made it clear that cruising in December isn't going to work for him, then go without him and have a great time!

And make sure that you tell him how good a time you had without him and also hope that his teams loose - serves him right.

The longest running rivalry west of the Mississippi River between Colorado State University and The University of Wyoming. This is why they have dvr's I can watch it once I get home.

Wow. At least you know where you (and your birthday and your anniversary) stand ....... right behind the Ravens.

I noticed that you did not ask what YOU should do -- you just asked if WE would skip a cruise for a football game.

As much as my husband loves sports, he would never pick his team before me.

Just one more different suggestion. Since money is an important issue, why not compromise and go on a shorter cruise that leaves on Monday and returns Saturday morning. There are some very good options out of both Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa. I don't know your age, but if you are a young couple you should really enjoy Liberty of the Seas out of Ft. Lauderdale. This is a ship with a lot of bells and whistles. Look at getting an inside cabin. For a short cruise like this you will be out and about and you can enjoy the inside time with your very loving and grateful husband AND you can put some extra money away for your emergency fund and for your next cruise. There is also Brilliance of the Seas out of Tampa and many Carnival cruises.

Of course you can go to a divorce lawyer or go on a cruise by yourself and be miserable. Is this what you really want to do? But I prefer to consider my marriage a partnership as does my husband and we try to find cruises that work for both of us.

This is not a free cruise or a cruise that you have already paid for. I think if you had asked people for suggestions on how to get an inexpensive cruise in January you would have gotten a lot of different answers.

I would look for a really inexpensive last minute cruise in an inside cabin. You will be having a lot of fun in that inside cabin making up if you know what I mean. And your husband will love you all the more for it.

And now I know I will be bombarded by people who say you need to go in a balcony cabin, but you will be surprised how much fun you can have in an inside cabin saving money.

First...in the OP they are not giving up a cruise for football. They are NOT BOOKING a cruise for football...they can still go on the cruise. Personally, I would almost never not book a cruise because of any sporting event...but there are exceptions. We are Baylor fans (son graduated from there) and right now they are #4 and only have one more big game (on paper) this regular season. If they win out they have a good chance to be in the national championship playoffs. Since that game is being played in our hometown we will probably buy tickets if they are in the final four just in case. Similarly, if I had tickets to the Super Bowl, Indy 500, Kentucky Derby, Final Four, The Masters...sporting events that are on my sports bucket list...I would most definetly not book a cruise that conflicts and the wife would absolutely understand.

While the OP's husband is putting sports ahead of a possible cruise there is a good chance that the OP knew he was a huge football fan before she suggested the date. Nobody seems to be bashing her for wanting to force him away from something she knows he loves just so she can get what she wants...and that thing is something that she can still have a few weeks later.

So glad you put the smiley face up there! :)

Actually, we have such consideration for each other, that the words "let" and "allowed" have no place in our relationship. While he would never put a sporting event ahead of our anniversary or my birthday, I would never ask him to give up a BIG sporting event (even on TV) for one of those celebrations. We could always celebrate the next day (and we often have).

But the important thing is that we would each put the other one first -- and we often have win-win situations!

To be honest, he would never choose his sports events over a cruise that would fall on our anniversary or my birthday. (If it was one of the Majors -- golf -- I would never think of having him give it up and he knows it. But a "regular" football game, nah, he would choose making me happy!)

Sounds like you have a wonderful relationship. DH and I both enjoy watching most sports, especially football (soccer) but we wouldn't not book a cruise because it clashed with a big match. We might both be a little disappointed at missing it, but there is always the facility to tape it ready to watch when we return from yet another fabulous cruise!!!

Here is the back ground. We gave up a cruise booked for next year because of some unexpected expenses. So we then came into a little bit of unexpected money. (this all happened with in a month of each other) so dh says we can book a "cheap" cruise. So I look on line. Well the best time to book a "cheap" cruise is right before christmas. I find two cruises and tell dh about the great deals, the dates etc and all is honky dory. I am getting ready to book (as final payment was the next day for one of them) and we were kind of batting two cruises back and forth dates length, just general conversation when my dh turns to me and says. "Now what are those dates again?" So I repeat the dates and start to go over the itinaries when he says. "We can't go on a cruise in December. Its footbal season!" Honest to God I thought he was pulling my leg. I just looked at him and said. "Are you kidding me? You won't take a cruise in December because its footaball season?" Well he is deadly serious. He says we can go after December 28th when the season is over! Talk about being put in second place in your husband's affections.

So that folks is where we stand. dH thinks if we wait until the end of December that we will be able to get a "good deal" on a cruise in January! I told him we will need to pay at least three times the price of a cruise in December.

My question is. Would you stay home from a cruise because of a foot ball game?

Oh one last thing. We would be cruising on my birthday and our Anniversary if we went in December.

Obviously asking your question here will overwhelming give you the answer you want. CC is populated by self-proclaimed "cruise addicts". :D

Try asking your question on the Ravens Fan Club's website and see what the responses are.;)

Only you know how important the Ravens are to your husband. If it's really, really important to him try to find a cruise that will have the Ravens on TV, is in a port while the game is on (where you might find free wifi), or book at another time. Quite frankly, if you told him how much to tried to accommodate his love of the Ravens by looking into other options, he will probably relent and go. Besides, he married you in December so the Ravens can't be that important to him.:D

Unless, of course, he watched them on your honeymoon!
