Boozing

Have you noticed more inebriated fellow passengers due to the more people with drink packages? I usually get the soda package and drink no alcohol on a cruise but I will have a basic alcohol package as a perk on my next cruise so I plan to drink a lot more:p Since I fall asleep after my second drink I won't bother anyone else. I guess the late night comics will appreciate a looser audience but no one likes a sloppy drunk.

We have had the Premium Alcoholic Beverage Package on each of our last three cruises. I do not recall any excessive boozing on any of these cruises. For some reason though I cannot recall the afternoons nor the evenings.

Over the last 2 years we've noticed a significant uptick in people who have obviously been overserved.

An excerpt from our letter to Celebrity after our January 2014 Eclipse cruise is provided:

We were at the Sunset Bar one evening enjoying the ambiance of the location, sharing with new friends our days adventures when it became impossible not to notice the behaviour of 2 young ladies (for lack of a better description), and their gentleman escort. Their voices were way too loud, their language profane, their behaviour vulgar. It was evident they were drunk to the point of not caring how they impacted others around them. My wife asked the bartender to address the situation, but after he did nothing I had a very brief, very blunt conversation with them, and they left the area. Clearly not only our group were impacted as two couples made a point of thanking me for my intervention. There are two issues relative to this situation, firstly Celebrity must provide adequate supervision to make sure guests are not impaired. This is a safety issue for all of us. Having people not in control of themselves on a ship increases the risk for all of us. Secondly, other guests such as myself should never ever have to be faced with dealing with this type of behaviour. If Celebrity is going to allow people to drink to the point of impairment, conduct themselves with no respect for others, then Celebrity needs to manage the consequences. In short, we bought and paid for a Celebrity cruise experience, if we wanted a Carnival experience, we would have bought a Carnival cruise.

Celebrities response was to agree this shouldn't happen, apologize profusely, but would make no commitments that it wouldn't happen again.

I did on our last cruise.

There was one woman who was very rowdy and she spit her shot out all over herself, the table and everyone who was sitting with her. This was at the sunset bar.

We also noticed more people gathering around the bar in the pool area and they were loud amongst themselves.

I've never experienced this before on our previous cruises with celebrity. I know I'll get flamed for this but we also noticed a difference in the class of passengers on our last sailing as well. Don't know if we had an off sailing or the beverage package perks contributed to this. There were plenty of seasoned cruisers onboard but first timers with X because of the drink offerings. They told me that was their reason for choosing X.

Add me to the list of those who have not seen any difference with the beverage packages. Celebrity in general is a more sedate, dignified cruise line than some of the others and attracts a fairly elegant crowd. True, there has been an occasional passenger who clearly has had too much, but we have certainly seen that on cruises that did not have the beverage package. Come to think of it, we occasionally see it in our local establishments too....

No, but I've seen a few folks that should have a drink or two and unwind a few notches.

This topic has been coming up ever since the drink packages have come out. Just like this thread there have always been mixed answers, I think people see what their biases allow them to see.

And perhaps some people don't see because of their bias ?

Just because you haven't been bothered by out of control drunks on a Celebrity cruise does not mean others haven't.

Spot on! :D

I've witnessed a few folks who perhaps are having too good of a time (and I might have fallen into that category myself once or twice ;)) but never any "out of control drunks".

It depends on the class of passenger not the package. I sailed on a cruise line with totally free booze and never saw anyone drunk. While I haven't sailed on the lower-end mass market lines, friends and family tell them there are a number of drunks, some of them rowdy, on those cruises and those folks are paying for every drink.

LOL, I love this response, as the other person said "spot on". Some people get on board just looking for something to complain about. Mind your own business and just enjoy yourself.

The notion that someone who's had a few too many is "endangering" the other passengers is just ludicrous. If someone ever came over to me and started lecturing me like that it would get ugly!:D

I agree. If some snooty moralizer approached me it would be the same result. Ugly.

I try to conduct myself appropriately and not bother others. I wish some of the complainers would direct their anger toward the people who reserve deck chairs in the main pool area. That would be a "cause" I could get behind. ;)

I have seen people who may have been over served on many cruises starting in 1980. I have not really seen a different that I would attribute to the drink packages. There will always be some people who are obnoxious in any social environment. At least you can be assured that they are not driving and putting other people's lives at risk.

IMO a cruise is a great place to not have to worry about drinking too much. I truly do not believe the guests that are obnoxious are affected by the method they use to pay for the drinks.

I agree with the majority --- don't really think that the drink packages have made "over-served" customers an issue. In twelve years of sailing RC and X, I have definitely seen my share of folks falling down, when the ship wasn't even moving. Most of us old-timers have observed this sort of thing, long before drink packages were ever thought of.

I also agree that it's hightly inadvisable to confront a loud or belligerent drunk. That's a really good way to start a physical confrontation, which could result in BOTH parties being put off the ship (at the very least). If you feel that someone is behaving in a disruptive / dangerous manner, and the bartender (or other staff) will not deal with it -- call the GR desk and request Security. Bottom line, it's not your job to deal with that individual.

I have noticed no difference.

One of the reasons we continue to sail on Celebrity is because of the lovely people that we meet on board. Behaviour has rarely ever been an issue, either before or after the advent of the beverage packages.

You haven't seen me yet as I'm on the Equinox on 12/1. My wife, lovely. Me, we'll see

Totally Agree. And there will always be the minority few that will have one or two 'too many' or behave in a vulgar manner - but I would be hesitant to link that to a drink package.

Maybe the chair hoggers have purchased a deckchair package I havent heard about....:rolleyes:

Wow, how many new pax did you talk to? Or rather, how many did you grill with questions about the drink package?
