PhDUnderTheSea Posted January 7, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 7, 2015 My GF's sister and brother in law are thinking of joining us on our Allure cruise this spring. Their baby will be approximately 10 months old at the time. They would not have access to the suites sun deck with us, and we generally all prefer a quieter place than around a main pool. They can be such a madhouse on some ships. Is it an issue for us to all spend time in the Solarium if the baby is asleep? If the baby is awake and making noise, parent(s) and baby leave, but we would like to hang out and chat together during the day in a quieter environment near to a pool and some food. What are your experiences with this? Best- Steve
Rare BillOh Posted January 7, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) IMHO, no, most people probably wouldn't notice until the baby started crying. While I love my family, I am in the solarium to get away from kids, excusing an occasional intrusion to check in. IF you haven't been on Allure right above the main pool deck and its almost never crowded, just walk up 10 stairs and the view of the pool and plenty of space is right there. In fact, I saw a lot of people with toddlers walking that area because it wasn't crowded. Edited January 7, 2015 by BillOh

Is there a shaded area up there anywhere? Best- Steve
boaterette Posted January 7, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 7, 2015 Doesn't the solarium have an age limit?

JasonV1 Posted January 7, 2015 #8 Share Posted January 7, 2015 I have seen them ask underage people to leave the Solarium. I don't make a big stink about it myself, but if deck chairs are in short supply (and you use one for the baby) someone will probably say something. Generally speaking the upstairs portion (deck 16) of the Solarium might be the best choice, plus it has shade (as someone else said). Very quiet up there; I like taking naps there myself! Debde Posted January 7, 2015 #9 Share Posted January 7, 2015 Royal has a problem with enforcing rules so one would think-as long as the baby is sleeping and quiet-you could probably get away with it. An awake human child that moves and makes a sound will be banished!! :p It's kind of like the no bringing soda and water on, no seat saving, dress code rules etc.........enforcement is spotty!! ;)
Lady Chew Posted January 7, 2015 #10 Share Posted January 7, 2015 I use the Solarium a lot ... I wouldn't have a problem with a sleeping baby, or even one that was awake as long as it wasn't screaming ... and as long as cutie pie wasn't taking up a lounge chair ... there are never enough ... Starry Eyes Posted January 7, 2015 #11 Share Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) honestly, I think you should find another spot. If baby is awake, baby belongs in a family or private space. If baby is sleeping, other guests will feel uncomfortable as they do not wish to wake the baby. Also if sleeping baby is allowed, some adult with an angelic, perfectly behaved (in parent's opinion) toddler will want their little one in solarium, and if toddler is OK.... candiac Posted January 7, 2015 #12 Share Posted January 7, 2015 Hi, Our family was on the Explorer Sick Ship (norovirus) last January. Towards the end of the cruise as we neared Bayonne in January, we were enjoying the solarium hot tub after dinner the last evening, Olivia 18 months was asleep in her carriage, in a corner out of the wind. Our family (6 adults) were the only ones in the hot tub and we did not see anyone else in the area. Only ones brave enough I presume. We were approached by the RCI security staff and asked to remove her as it was adults only. We were not being loud.We complied immediately, but were disappointed, especially given the dismal conditions on that cruise. I would not count on being able to use the area. But rules are rules and we did not argue. Just our luck, not sure anyone went to the casino that night.
skagen Posted January 7, 2015 #13 Share Posted January 7, 2015 I like the last post... Rules are rules in that if someone wants to enforce a sleeping baby leave the solarium, totally understandable. Solarium is there for "peace and quiet" from children. A sleeping baby is no threat to that. Baby starts stirring, it's time to move out of the Solarium. I'm generally pretty big on rule following but I think in this sort of case where you have a sleeping baby, some flexibility is something reasonable people would have no problems with. Obviously on this board there will be no consensus but in the event of wanting to keep a sleeping baby sleeping it helps to be in a quieter place and as long as no one is being disturbed it seems totally reasonable it be in the solarium to me. spookwife Posted January 7, 2015 #14 Share Posted January 7, 2015 the Solarium is for people SIXTEEN YEARS and up. not sixteen months. Bad enough many ships with the Park cafe in the same area cause kids to be back there as it is. a few potted plants do not a separation make. the signs clearly state the pool and hot tub areas are adult only. Please respect your fellow cruisers and abide by that

firts Posted January 7, 2015 #16 Share Posted January 7, 2015 There are approx. 6000 guests, rules are rules, you cant say yes to some and no to others. I wouldn't mind 1 sleeping baby. But then there would be 10 sleeping babies, then 20 and so on.
Diver2014 Posted January 7, 2015 #17 Share Posted January 7, 2015 There are very few places on ships anymore for adults only. There are signs posted in the Solarium near the doorways that say adults only. Please respect that. I like a place where there are no children running around. We were on the Radiance of the Seas last January in Australia and there were unsupervised kids running all over the place in the Solarium and in the pool. When I asked the bartender about enforcing the policy, he just shrugged his shoulders and said 'what can I do?'. How about enforcing the policy? Ask security if the crew don't want to do it. There are areas for all the kids in the rest of the ship. I don't think enforcing the policy is asking too much. Let everyone enjoy their cruise, eh? ChipLondon Posted January 8, 2015 #18 Share Posted January 8, 2015 Perfectly fine by me, as along as it is also okay for me to bring a very quite litre of Vodka on board as well. :D .
cb at sea Posted January 8, 2015 #19 Share Posted January 8, 2015 No, it's not ok...unless a "child" is 16 years old, they may not partake of the Solarium's solitude..whether sleeping or not. That would lead to: "My child doesn't talk, so they can sit with me", or "My child is special...I can't leave them"....so sorry, too bad. The Solarium is for those over 16 years. Sorry! Big_G Posted January 8, 2015 #20 Share Posted January 8, 2015 I couldn't care any less OP because I rarely go in there but the wife does love it. That said, I've seen vigilant passengers complain to staff forcing them to take action. I'd be shocked if someone didn't complain.

Grandma Dazzles Posted January 8, 2015 #23 Share Posted January 8, 2015 When I read the original post my reaction was why not!! A sleeping baby won't hurt anyone. However, the problem is that the baby will wake up, and many other parents are going to think they can bring their babies/toddlers, etc. While RC is not known for its enforcement of rules, I think in this case sticking to the adults only should be enforced. One child will easily lead to twenty. The ships are so large and there are so many other places that you could find, with shade, where you can all enjoy your vacation, have a drink, food, etc. without using the solarium. matj2000 Posted January 8, 2015 #24 Share Posted January 8, 2015 You don't need to ask permission, just do it. I highly doubt anyone will care about a baby or even notice. Except some of the people on this site, but I doubt they will be there.
pennielz Posted January 8, 2015 #25 Share Posted January 8, 2015 There are lots of quiet places on the ship that allow children. Please choose one of these to converse with your friends while the baby sleeps. The Solarium is the only place adults can escape from children, including sleeping ones. Thank you.
