People are wanting to disembark and get refunds on Liberty of the Seas; can they?!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone...Our family had cabin 1700 last week. I was on the balcony on the last sea day when I felt a shutter...actually huge vibrations. Then we heard a clunking sound instead of the usual engine sound...the ship sailed slower after that. No announcements made either...just so you all know we had a superb cruise!

It is amazing how infectious griping can be over some problem or other. Some folks get so worked up they really start foaming at the mouth over it.

Just sit back and relax....it will all be ok. One thing for sure.....you NEVER want to be escorted off a ship. From that point, you are on your own no matter where it is. Besides that you are forever blacklisted from that cruise line and every line they are associated with.

Instead of trying to start a riot, better to go back to the bar and have another martini.

People sure get do get rattled quickly on the first day of their vacations. Wow, I would love to be on that ship right now, no matter how late she gets out of port. I can imagine sitting on my balcony watching the port lights and breathing a sigh of relief that I got there in time and without a problem, and how much fun I am going to have over the next week. :D

I'm with you. Who would want to get OFF a cruise ship once they were on? The first night and day are at sea, usually, so what's the difference if you are "sitting at the dock of the bay" (that wold make a good song.................), or at sea? :D

Seriously, other than the shops and the casino, everything goes on, shows, dinner, bars open, etc. I don't get the issue, not to mention the fact a few hours delay usually does not affect the itinerary. People need to get a grip. Some people think they deserve compensation for absolutely everything. I'd be happy to be onboard enjoying myself.

I post this with personal experience. Just be patient, sit tight and watch it unfold. And I'll throw in, don't worry and enjoy the ship as best you can.

I was on the Navigator in March of last year. We could not sail due to an oil spill and by Monday during dinner, the Capt announced the sailing was cancelled and everyone would be getting a 100% refund, in addition, a 25% discount on a future cruise. Further he stated that everyone could stay on the ship if they so desired to enjoy all the ship could offer. Although there was no Casino.

By Wed morning, 1/3 of the ship's passengers had left. And then the Coast Guard released the ship to sail so the Capt announced the ship was sailing to Cozumel, basically, 3 sea days and 1 port day and the 100% refund was still in play, plus the 25% off a future cruise.

Keep in mind this was not even a Royal issue/problem but rather the Coast Guard shut down the port. I think you're in good hands. Sit tight.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding your post, but you do realize they did set sail yesterday, just that they were late!!!!

It's still good advice. :)

That was the simultaneous shudder of passengers and dropping of glasses when passengers looked at the new increases on their bar receipts. :D

I find it very very very hard to believe that no one in this thread would not complain at some point even if its to yourself . If this was your cruise and you paid all this money and the ship was still in port everyone would be upset at some point. When they book the cruise and final payment rccl didn't tell them the ship you leave after 11 pm. They should get $10 onboard credit. For me its not the same when the ship not at sea and still in port I book a cruise not a hotel or resort. They came to CC to vent that all. Its funny at some people don't get that the cruise line own you after you signature on that contract.

When we sailed Allure last year the ship was supposed to sail at 5 PM and we didn't set sail from Ft. Lauderdale until after 9 PM. There was very little information forthcoming from the captain as to the delay. And this was the first sailing after the ship had been dry docked for an emergency repair so people were starting to wonder if there was a mechanical issue. However, I didn't hear any clamoring about the feeling that we should be getting any type of a refund or OBC.

$10? Why?

And, as very very very hard as you may find it to believe, some people really are not easily riled.

I fully get the contract implications, but I also wouldn't be upset by a delay of a few hours. The passengers had been given an approximate departure time and been reassured they would make their ports, so what's to be upset about? The only thing missing from the experience for those few hours was the casino and the shops.

IMO, the passengers aren't owed any compensation for the short delay, and those clamoring to get off were grossly over-reacting. The current expectation that every time something goes wrong on a ship there should be compensation is getting out of control. It would never cross my mind to expect monetary compensation for a delayed sailing, especially if the itinerary wasn't going to be impacted. Chalk it up to "ship" happens. Many things in life don't go according to plan. That doesn't mean they're all compensable.

Ships leave late sometimes. I would be much happier knowing the cruise line would hold a ship in port to make a repair than if they decided to make an on time departure just so the ship could be at sea. Some of those that complained, have been complaining long before the ship left late. A $10 OBC was not going to appease them.

I would have gladly taken the place of those who were escorted off the ship and enjoyed whatever cabin they had that was completely paid for on NOS. While I would have probably been in the casino losing money or in a gift shop spending money, had they been open, I would have lived through the horror of strolling on the deck, eating a wonderful meal, sitting in a lounge, pub or bar having a drink and discussing the first port. Minor inconvenience at the most. I'm sure NOS would have liked to have the revenue they lost on the casino and the merchandise, so I think they were probably more anxious to leave than the passengers.

When traveling I think it's always prudent to expect delays. Flights are delayed and cancelled all the time. Last year, we had a flight delayed for almost 4 hours because a light bulb needed to be changed. It was annoying but I didn't threaten to leave the airport and give up my whole trip. In the end, it was a very small glitch in a great vacation. And if you have to be delayed, a cruise ship is a much better place to be rather than Atlanta International!!

Some people are NOT suited for traveling. Delays happen, ports get skipped, bad weather is always a threat, mechanical parts break down, etc., etc., etc. If traveling stresses you out to the point that one of these things "ruins" your vacation or have you clamoring for a refund or "compensation", you are probably better suited to staying home.

In our many years of traveling and many, many unexpected outcomes, we still love traveling and roll with the punches....and pop up smiling.

Once, on a transpacific crossing, we had to turn around for a full half day to meet a helicopter because of a medical emergency. The Captain keep saying, over and over, that the detour would not interfere with our arrival to Hilo (we had 5 sea days crossing) but, you would have thought the sky was falling. People all over the ship were angry, verbally bashing RCI and completely forgetting that someone was sick enough to warrant the reversal and that it wasn't going to change anything about our cruise. I was shocked.

There are no guarantees in life....we all work hard to pay for our vacations and look forward to everything going smooth as glass, but the reality of it is that it is seldom perfect. Do you want to dwell on the negative or do you want to accentuate the positive and have good memories? Your choice.

But, if you are one of those Negative Nellie's, please stay the heck away from me, I won't have you bringing my good times down to your level.

Have you ever been on a cruise that was delayed in leaving? I have. On our second cruise on Carnival Glory, we found out late the evening before that the ship would be delayed getting in and boarding and departure would be delayed. We got to port around 4:30, boarded around 6 and left PC around 11 pm. We never once thought to complain. We were on vacation on a cruise with friends. We enjoyed the shows, dinner (it was open seating aspeople were still boarding, but it was nice meeting others), and our itinerary wasn't impacted at all.

People are venting about something that really isn't important. They're on the cruise they paid for, they just left a little late, geez.

sounds like a perfect mind set! Just like you said, sit and relax, be happy you got there, get some food, get a nice fruity drink and relax....it's really not complicated is it? :D

edit: I say this never having been in this situation, but it is a good reminder to me, and the rest of us, to just relax a bit. I sometimes get upset when things aren't going as planned or whatever, but as I get older I try to go with the flow a bit better and use a little perspective. So you leave a little late, which difference does it make? maybe you get to tomorrow's port a little late and miss an excursion. Okay, that sucks, I get that, but otherwise just deal with it.

Just like anything else, try work with life, not against it. Like my dad always says "It's not a perfect world"

LOL about the light bulb. Our DS and DIL had a flight delayed due to a missing autopilot button. The plane had been sitting at the airport for several hours between flights and the guess was that another plane needed one so they just took it off that plane. Things happen for stupid reasons sometimes, but it's life and if leaving port a little late is enough to "ruin" someone's vacation, they need to not ever go anywhere, ever or they'll be constantly disappointed.

This is the best quote I have read in all my years reading CC.

Thank you!
